    Abstract
The compute-and-forward (CMF) method has shown a great promise as an innovative approach to exploit interference towards achieving higher network throughput. The CMF was primarily introduced by means of information theory tools. Although there have been some recent works discussing different aspects of efficient and practical implementation of CMF, there are still some issues that are not covered. In this study, the authors first introduce a method to decrease the implementation complexity of the CMF method. They then evaluate the exact outage probability of the authors proposed simplified CMF scheme, and hereby provide an upper bound on the outage probability of the optimum CMF in all...

    Abstract
Azo dye degradation in wastewater treatment is a subject which has garnered the attention of many research studies. In this study, an innovative approach, namely, an integrated system of five batches (ISFB), was developed to investigate the capability of Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 9763 for continuous degradation of methyl red as a representative azo dye. Toward this end, an expanded immobilized microbial bed (EIMB) reactor was established with a bed of encapsulated yeast cells in sodium alginate. EIMB reactor was run in two modes, single batch and ISFB. Moreover, durability of the microbial cells was evaluated by repeating the continuous decolourization eight sequential times in EIMB at...

Theoretical study of diffusional release of a dispersed solute from cylindrical polymeric matrix: A novel configuration for providing zero-order release profile

    , Article Applied Mathematical Modelling ; Volume 73 , 2019 , Pages 136-145 ; 0307904X (ISSN) Khorrami Jahromi, A ; Shieh, H ; Saadatmand, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Inc  2019
    Abstract
In the context of controlled release drug delivery approaches, the systems providing zero-order release kinetics have special advantages. Through employing these systems, drug concentration could be maintained within the therapeutic window over release time; thus maximum effectiveness alongside minimized side effects of the drug are achieved. However, obtaining zero-order drug release is extremely challenging. One of the main obstacles is the fact that implemented devices should be designed to overcome the decreasing mass transfer driving force, especially, in polymeric systems in which diffusion mechanism is dominant. In this study, we developed a new configuration of a polymeric matrix...

Predicting the collisions of heavy vehicle drivers in iran by investigating the effective human factors

    Abstract
Traffic collisions are one of the most important challenges threatening the general health of the world. Iran's crash statistics demonstrate that approximately 16,500 people lose their lives every year due to road collisions. According to the traffic police of Iran, heavy vehicles (including trailers, trucks, and panel trucks) contributed to 20.5% of the fatal road traffic collisions in the year 2013. This highlights the need for devoting special attention to heavy vehicle drivers to further explore their driving characteristics. In this research, the effect of heavy vehicle drivers' behavior on at-fault collisions over three years has been investigated with an innovative approach of...

    Abstract
In this study, a real-time exible modular modeling approach to simulating the dynamic behavior of gas turbine engines based on nonlinear thermodynamic and dynamic laws is addressed. The introduced model, which is developed in the Matlab-Simulink environment, is an object-oriented high-speed real-time computer model and is capable of simulating the dynamic behavior of a broad group of gas turbine engines due to its modular structure. Moreover, a Kalman lter-based model tuning procedure is applied to decrease the modeling errors. Modeling errors are de ned as the mismatch between simulation results and available experimental data. This tuning procedure is an underdetermined estimation problem,...

    Abstract
A new multipurpose wind tunnel with adjustable test section designed in the science and research branch of Islamic Azad University site could be used either as the environmental, subsonic or climatic wind tunnels. For this purpose, a new design approach was adopted in which through the adjustment of the wind tunnel cycle, i.e. the nozzle of test section,it could be utilized as any of the three wind tunnels. A design used for environmental wind tunnels and other contraction which was adjusted by 50 % through changes in the polynomial contraction for other applications. As a result, the best fitted profile for the environmental wind tunnels contraction was selected by contraction best fit...

Quantification of irrigation water using remote sensing of soil moisture in a semi-arid region

    , Article Remote Sensing of Environment ; Volume 231 , 2019 ; 00344257 (ISSN) Jalilvand, E ; Tajrishy, M ; Ghazi Zadeh Hashemi, S. A ; Brocca, L ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Inc  2019
    Abstract
Irrigated agriculture is the principal consumer of fresh water resources. Most countries do not have a precise measurement of water consumption for irrigation. In this study, an innovative approach is proposed that allows for estimation of irrigation water use at the catchment scale based on satellite soil moisture data. To this end, the SM2RAIN algorithm, which had been originally developed for estimation of rainfall from the soil moisture observations, is adopted. The satellite soil moisture observations obtained from Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) along with different rainfall and evapotranspiration (ET) products in the period 2012–2015 are used as the input to the...

Single machine scheduling problem with batch outsourcing

    , Article International Journal of Engineering, Transactions B: Applications ; Volume 35, Issue 5 , 2022 , Pages 1006-1016 ; 1728144X (ISSN) Safarzadeh, H ; Kianfar, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Outsourcing as a useful strategy in the industry can be integrated into scheduling problems. Moreover, batch outsourcing is a practical assumption owing to the logistics issues for transferring the parts between the manufacturer and the subcontractors. However, this assumption is rarely addressed in the scheduling literature. In this paper, a novel single machine scheduling problem with the option of batch outsourcing is studied. The objective is to minimize the sum of the total completion time of the jobs and the total outsourcing cost. To solve the problem, first, two mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) models, named MP1 and MP2, are developed, which respectively use a straightforward...

    Abstract
Enzymatic removal of Bisphenol A (BPA), acknowledged as an environmentally friendly approach, is a promising method to deal with hard degradable contaminants. However, the application of “enzymatic treatment” has been limited due to lower operational stability and practical difficulties associated with recovery and recycling. Enzyme immobilization is an innovative approach which circumvents these drawbacks. In this study, laccase from Trametes hirsuta was used for BPA removal. Amino-functionalized magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles were synthesized via the co-precipitation method followed by surface modification with (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS). The as-prepared nanoparticles were...
