    Abstract
Hysteretic phenomena have been observed in different branches of engineering sciences. Although each of them has its own characteristics, Madelung's rules are common among most of them. Based on Madelung's rules, we propose a general approach to the simulation of both the rate-independent and rate-dependent hystereses with either congruent or non-congruent loops. In this approach, a static function accommodates different properties of the hystereses. Using the learning capability of the neural networks, an adaptive general model for hysteresis is introduced according to the proposed approach and it is called the neuro-Madelung model. Using various hystereses from different areas of...

    Abstract
In this paper application of Ionic Polymer Metal Composite (IPMC) as actuator in a deformable ring capable of locomotion is studied. Such a deformable ring moves as a result of gravitational force acting on its body when its shape changes. Abstract
Neural networks have been applied very successfully in the identification and control of dynamic systems. The universal approximation capabilities of the multilayer perceptron have made it a popular choice for modeling nonlinear systems and for implementing general-purpose nonlinear controllers. In this paper we try to model and control the mass-spring-damper mechanism as a 1 DOF system using neural networks. The control architecture used in this paper is Model reference controller (MRC) as one of the popular neural network control architectures

    , Article Proceedings of the ASME Conference on Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures and Intelligent Systems 2009, SMASIS2009, 21 September 2009 through 23 September 2009, Oxnard, CA ; Volume 1 , 2009 , Pages 641-647 ; 9780791848968 (ISBN) Amini, A ; Mehdigholi, H ; Elahinia, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The shape memory alloys (SMAs) and smart composites have a large use in high and low level industry, while a lot of research is being done in this field. The existence of smart composite structures is because of the advance mechanical benefits of the above materials. This work refers to dynamic and quasi static nonlinear explanation of these materials. After mathematical model consideration on the rate of strain, a model which is about martensite ratio of NiTi has been presented. This work has been done because of the high sensitivity of these materials to strain rate and use of visual and measurable engineering criteria to access other variables. As the martensite ratio is not engineering...

Nonlinear dynamic modeling of smart composite with piezoelectric nitinol and MMC

    , Article Proceedings of the ASME Conference on Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures and Intelligent Systems 2009, SMASIS2009, 21 September 2009 through 23 September 2009, Oxnard, CA ; Volume 2 , 2009 , Pages 141-148 ; 9780791848975 (ISBN) Amini, A ; Mehdigholi, H ; Elahinia, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, one smart composite involving nitinol, piezoelectric and MMC is modeled. This simulation covers all criteria in these advanced materials and theoretically solves the five-order equation. Furthermore, numerical sample is investigated and results have been explored. The results represent the relationship between natural frequency of the structure, temperature, the lateral deflection and martensite ratio of shape memory alloy. The results show nonlinearity response in dynamic motion in lower natural frequency and linear behavior in higher frequency. In this simulation, numerical approximation has been avoided. , Article Proceedings of the ASME Conference on Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures and Intelligent Systems 2009, SMASIS2009; 21 September 2009 through 23 September 2009 ; Volume 1 , 2009 , Pages 663-671 ; 9780791848968 (ISBN) Amini, A ; Mehdigholi, H ; Elahinia, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper theoretically finds the different parameters of shape memory alloys via strain rate. Finite element formulation for temperature rate, and produced latent heat due to phase transition have been derived. Moreover, the equivalent viscous damp coefficient is provided. In addition, the Devonshire coefficient has been theoretically found by simplifications. This method helps to predict the heat and temperature change in quasi-static and dynamic studies in NiTi. Furthermore, they could be used in high nonlinear and low elastic deflection of NiTi. Then, the nonlinear vibration of smart composite involved with NiTi from any kind and percent of Ni and Ti could be handled by results....

    2008
    Abstract
In this paper, a thorough investigation of response of a composite Timoshenko simply-supported beam with actuating layers, under the motion of a partially distributed mass is studied and a control system based on the feedback of beam's deflection velocity is applied to alleviate and suppress the vibration of the beam in either case when the mass is still traveling on the beam or departed the beam. The actuating layers are made up of Terfenol-D smart material which are sensitive to magnetic field (magnetostrictive materials) and this trait makes them very suitable to be used for vibration control. They introduce damping to the system through which the energy of system dissipates. The response...

    Abstract
Considerable attention has been devoted recently to vibration control using intelligent materials as sensor/actuator. An intelligent control technique using a neural network is proposed for vibration control of micro-cantilever beam with bonded piezoelectric sensor and actuator. Structure modal characteristic analysis is done to determine the optimal configuration of piezoelectric sensor and actuator. With the piezoelectric elements are surface-bonded near the same position to the fixed end of micro-cantilever beam, an optimal controller, linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG), and an intelligent strategy based on neural network are investigated. Finally, the simulation results are given to...

    Abstract
In this paper, strain gradient thermo-elasticity formulation for Functionally Graded (FG) thick-walled cylinders is presented. Elastic strain energy density function is considered to be a function of gradient of strain tensor in addition to the strain tensor. The material properties are assumed to vary according to power law in radial direction. Using the constitutive equations and equation of equilibrium in the cylindrical coordinates, fourth order non-homogenous governing equation for thermo-elastic analysis of thick-walled FG cylinders subjected to thermal and mechanical loadings is obtained and solved numerically. Results show that the intrinsic length parameter affects the stress...

Analysis of a flexible beam actuated by two active SMA wires

    , Article ASME 2010 Conference on Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures and Intelligent Systems, SMASIS 2010, 28 September 2010 through 1 October 2010 ; Volume 1 , October , 2010 , Pages 661-672 ; 9780791844151 (ISBN) Zakerzadeh, M. R ; Sayyaadi, H ; Aerospace Division ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
There are two ways of using SMAs as actuators for shape control of flexible structures; they can be either embedded within composite laminates or externally attached to the structures. Since the actuator can be placed at different offset distances from the beam, external actuators produce more bending moment and, consequently, more shape change. Such a configuration also allows introduction of fast convection cooling, very important in shape control applications that require a high-frequency response of SMA actuators. Although combination and modeling of externally-attached SMA actuator wires and strips have been widely considered by some researchers, these studies have some weaknesses that...

    Abstract
In some systems with hysteresis behavior like Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuators and Piezo actuators, we essentially need an accurate modeling of hysteresis either for controller design or performance evaluation. One of the most interesting Hysteresis non-linearity identification methods is Preisach model in which hysteresis is modeled by linear combination of elemental operators. Despite good ability of Preisach modeling to extract main features of system with hysteresis behavior, cause of tough numerical nature of Preisach, it is not convenient to use in real-time control applications. In this paper we present a novel method based on Artificial Neural Network. For evaluation of proposed...

    Abstract
In this article, free vibration behavior of a rotating nano/microcircular plate constructed from functionally graded magneto-elastic material is simulated with the first-order shear deformation theory. For the sake of comparison, the nonlocal elasticity theory and the modified couple stress theory are employed to implement the small size effect in the natural frequencies behavior of the nano/microcircular plate. The governing equations of motion for functionally graded magneto-elastic material nano/microcircular plates are derived based on Hamilton’s principle; comparing the obtained results with those in the literature, they are in a good agreement. Finally, the governing equations are...

    Abstract
Smart bio-based shape memory polymers with high performance and fast response have the exciting potential to meet the growing need in biomedical applications. In this study, novel fast response UV-curable shape memory polyurethane acrylates (SMPUAs) comprising polycaprolactone diols (PCL-Diol), hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and hydroxy-methyl methacrylate (HEMA) were synthesized by two-step bulk polymerization. Two series of PUAs with almost the same amount of hard segment content (HSC) were prepared with varying soft-segment molecular weight (2000, 3000, and 4000 g/mol) and different molar ratios of constituents. A mono-functional reactive diluent was used to control HSC and reduce the...

    Abstract
The photocatalytic decolorization of aqueous solutions of Direct Red 27 in the presence of various amounts of semiconductor powder suspensions has been investigated in a batch reactor with the use of artificial light sources. ZnO and TiO2 have been found the most active photocatalysts; the effect of catalyst loading and type on the reaction rate was optimized for maximum degradation. The results imply that 1:1 ratio is proper for the photocatalytic removal of Direct Red 27. In addition, the effects of particle size and surface area were examined in this photocatalytic process. The results showed that the decolorization efficiency increases with increase in surface area, and decrease in...

    Abstract
Marine structures, as key elements in the global energy network, constantly are subjected to harsh environmental loading conditions. Therefore, reliable yet efficient structural control mechanisms are required to ensure their safe functionality and structural stability.
