    , Article Microchemical Journal ; Volume 142 , 2018 , Pages 135-139 ; 0026265X (ISSN) Roohparvar, R ; Shamspur, T ; Mostafavi, A ; Bagheri, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A simple and rapid method for simultaneous separation and preconcentration of ultra-trace amounts of nitrate and nitrite using in-syringe liquid microextraction is developed. The extraction procedure is based on the selective ion-pairing complex formation of nitrate and nitrite with Cu(I)-neocuproine in 100 μL of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate as an extracting phase within a syringe. The atomic-absorption signal of copper in the ionic liquid layer is proportional to the nitrate and nitrite concentrations. When barbituric acid is used, nitrite is converted into violuric acid and thus it is removed from the environment. In this case, the selectivity of the modified-ligand is...

An inhomogeneous theory for the analysis of an all-optical gain-stabilized multichannel erbium-doped fiber amplifier in the presence of ion pairs

    , Article Optical Fiber Technology ; Volume 14, Issue 1D , 2008 , Pages 54-62 ; 10685200 (ISSN) Bahrampour, A ; Keyvaninia, S ; Karvar, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper the gain dynamics of an all-optical gain-clamped multichannel erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) with an inhomogeneous active medium in the presence of ion pairs is modeled. A two-level model for single ions and a three-level model for ion pairs are used to drive the propagation and rate equations of inhomogeneous laser medium. The governing equations are an uncountable system of partial differential equations (PDEs). Using the moment method, the system of PDEs is converted to a finite system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The solution of the system of ODEs is used to analyze the gain dynamics of all-optical gain-stabilized multi-wavelength heavy doped EDFA....

A new model in correlating the activity coefficients of aqueous electrolyte solutions with ion pair formation

    , Article Fluid Phase Equilibria ; Volume 261, Issue 1-2 , December , 2007 , Pages 313-319 ; 03783812 (ISSN) Mortazavi Manesh, S ; Taghikhani, V ; Ghotbi, C ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
In this work, the Ion Pair Modified Ghotbi-Vera Mean Spherical Approximation (IP-MGV-MSA) model was proposed to correlate the mean ionic activity coefficients (MIAC) for a number of symmetric and asymmetric aqueous electrolyte solutions at 25 °C. The new model is based on the recently proposed MGV-MSA model by Mortazavi-Manesh et al. In the IP-MGV-MSA model, the effects arising from the ion pair formation in the electrolyte solution was taken into account. Also, in the proposed model, while the cation diameter as well as the relative permittivity of water was considered to be dependent on electrolyte concentration, the anion diameter was independent of electrolyte concentration. The results...

    Abstract
In this paper the gain dynamics of an erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) with an inhomogeneous active medium in the presence of ion pairs is modeled. A two-level model for single ions and a three-level model for ion pairs are employed to write the propagation and rate equations of inhomogeneous laser medium. The governing equations are an uncountable system of partial differential equations (PDEs). By employing the moment method, the system of PDEs is converted to a finite system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The Solution of the system of ODEs is used to analyze the output power of a high concentration EDFL. As it expected, theoretical results show that the threshold pumping power...

Impact of sulfate ions on wettability alteration of oil-wet calcite in the absence and presence of cationic surfactant

    , Article Energy and Fuels ; Volume 30, Issue 2 , 2016 , Pages 819-829 ; 08870624 (ISSN) Karimi, M ; Al-Maamari, R. S ; Ayatollahi, S ; Mehranbod, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The modification of the surface wetting characteristics in fractured oil-wet carbonate reservoirs, by reversing wettability from oil-wet to water-wet, leads to improved oil recovery. However, in order to obtain a successful oil recovery process, it is crucial to understand the active mechanisms of wettability alteration. This study looks at the effect of sulfate ions as one of the most promising wettability influencing ions on the wetting properties of oil-wet calcite; the effect is studied both with and without the presence of cationic surfactant and possible mechanisms of wettability alteration are explored. A number of analytical techniques were utilized to analyze the mineral surface...

Ionic liquid based on α-amino acid anion and N7,N9-dimethylguaninium cation ([dMG][AA]): Theoretical study on the structure and electronic properties

    , Article Journal of Physical Chemistry A ; Volume 116, Issue 22 , April , 2012 , Pages 5436-5444 ; 10895639 (ISSN) Shakourian Fard, M ; Fattahi, A ; Bayat, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
The interactions between five amino acid based anions ([AA] - (AA = Gly, Phe, His, Try, and Tyr)) and N7,N9-dimethylguaninium cation ([dMG] +) have been investigated by the hybrid density functional theory method B3LYP together with the basis set 6-311++G(d,p). The calculated interaction energy was found to decrease in magnitude with increasing side-chain length in the amino acid anion. The interaction between the [dMG] + cation and [AA] - anion in the most stable configurations of ion pairs is a hydrogen bonding interaction. These hydrogen bonds (H bonds) were analyzed by the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. Finally, several correlations...

    Abstract
Because of the recent frequent observations of major dust storms in southwestern cities in Iran such as Ahvaz, and the importance of the ionic composition of particulate matters regarding their health effects, source apportionment, etc., the present work was conducted aiming at characterizing the ionic composition of total suspended particles (TSP) and particles on the order of ∼10 μm or less (PM10) during dust storms in Ahvaz in April-September 2010. TSP and PM10 samples were collected and their ionic compositions were determined using an ion chromatography. Mean concentrations of TSP and PM10 were 1,481.5 and 1,072.9 μg/m 3, respectively. Particle concentrations during the Middle Eastern...

Mechanistic study of wettability alteration of oil-wet calcite: The effect of magnesium ions in the presence and absence of cationic surfactant

    Abstract
Over 60% of the world's discovered oil reserves are held in carbonate reservoirs, which are mostly naturally fractured. Conventional water flooding results in low oil recovery efficiency in these reservoirs as most of them are oil-wet. On account of negative capillary forces, injected brine cannot penetrate simply into an oil-wet matrix of fractured formations to force the oil out. Wettability alteration of the rock surface to preferentially more water-wet state has been extensively studied using both smart water and surfactants separately. This study aims to study the effects of Mg2+ as one of the most important wettability influencing ions on the wetting properties of oil-wet carbonate...
