Solvent effects on the reaction rate and selectivity of synchronous heterogeneous hydrogenation of cyclohexene and acetone in ionic liquid/alcohols mixtures

    , Article Journal of Molecular Catalysis A: Chemical ; Volume 306, Issue 1-2 , 2009 , Pages 11-16 ; 13811169 (ISSN) Khodadadi Moghaddam, M ; Habibi Yangjeh, A ; Gholami, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Synchronous heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation of cyclohexene and acetone, catalyzed by Pt/Al2O3, was carried out in solutions of 2-hydroxy ethylammonium formate (a room temperature ionic liquid, RTIL) with ethanol and propan-1-ol at 25 °C. Rate constants and selectivity of the reaction (relative to cyclohexene hydrogenation) increase with mole fraction of the ionic liquid (IL). The reactants tendency to the catalyst surface increases by addition of the ionic liquid and thus the reaction rate increases, especially for cyclohexene hydrogenation. Consequently the selectivity to cyclohexene hydrogenation was increased. Single-parameter correlations of log k vs. π* (dipolarity/polarizibility)...

    2008
    Abstract
The second-order rate constants for cycloaddition reaction of cyclopentadiene with naphthoquinone were determined spectrophotometrically in various compositions of 1-(1-butyl)-3-methylimidazolium terafluoroborate ([bmim]BF4) with water and methanol at 25°C. Rate constants of the reaction in pure solvents are in the order of water > [bmim]BF 4 > methanol. Rate constants of the reaction decrease sharply with mole fraction of the ionic liquid in aqueous solutions and increase slightly to a maximum in alcoholic mixtures. Multi-parameter correlation of logk 2 versus solute-solvent interaction parameters demonstrated that solvophobicity parameter (Sp), hydrogen-bond donor acidity (α) and...

An accurate equation of state for fluids and solids

    , Article Journal of Physical Chemistry B ; Volume 113, Issue 35 , 2009 , Pages 11977-11987 ; 15206106 (ISSN) Parsafar, G. A ; Spohr, H. V ; Patey, G. N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A simple functional form for a general equation of state based on an effective near-neighbor pair interaction of an extended Lennard-Jones (12,6,3) type is given and tested against experimental data for a wide variety of fluids and solids. Computer simulation results for ionic liquids are used for further evaluation. For fluids, there appears to be no upper density limitation on the equation of state. The lower density limit for isotherms near the critical temperature is the critical density. The equation of state gives a good description of all types of fluids, nonpolar (including long-chain hydrocarbons), polar, hydrogen-bonded, and metallic, at temperatures ranging from the triple point...

    Abstract
Homopolymer hydrogel of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) and its nanocomposite counterpart were prepared to study their swelling properties. The hydrogels showed ability to absorb and retain electrolytes as well as binary mixtures of water and organic solvents (i.e., methanol, ethanol, acetone, ethylene glycol (EG), polyethylene glycol, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). The nanocomposite gel exhibited lower swelling in all solvent compositions in comparison with non-composite gel. Unlike conventional acrylic acid-based hydrogels, the poly(AMPS) gels showed superabsorbing capacity in pure ethanol, methanol, EG, DMSO and NMP. Meanwhile, swelling...

    Abstract
In this work, molecular dynamic simulation of the mixture of imidazolium based ionic liquids with alcohols is implemented in order to investigate mixing excess properties and some structural and physical properties of the mixture. Excess volumes and enthalpies are evaluated for 11 different mole fractions of ionic liquids at each 0.1, in the range of 0 to 1. Radial distribution function, cohesive energy density, potential of mean force, solvation energy, and diffusion coefficient are reported and analysed. The effects of the cationic alkyl chain length, in comparison with changes of the anions, on these properties are reported. Results reveal that the methanol molecule participates with its...

    Abstract
In this work, the selectivity coefficients of ionic liquids in liquid-liquid systems were correlated and predicted by the NRTL, UNIQUAC, and Wilson-NRF Gibbs free energy models and also by an artificial neural network system. The three thermodynamic models need six binary interaction parameters between solvent(1)-solvent(2), solvent(1)-ionic liquid, and solvent(2)-ionic liquid pairs in obtaining the selectivity of ionic liquid in liquid-liquid systems. Also, the selectivity coefficients of ionic liquids were modeled using an artificial neural network system. In the proposed neural network system, temperature, molecular weight of ionic liquid, molecular weight of solvents, and mole fractions...

    Abstract
TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by the sol - gel process using 2-hydroxylethy- lammonium formate as an ionic liquid. Nanoparticles were crystallized at various temperatures (300-700°C). The products were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption - desorption isotherms and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. It was found that the resulting TiO2 nanoparticles had good thermal stability either to resist collapse or the anatase-to-rutile phase transformation during heat treatment. The photocatalytic activity of the nanocrystalline TiO2 was evaluated by the degradation of Acid Blue 92 (AB92) which is commonly used as a textile dye. The results showed that the...

    Abstract
TiO2 and transition metal (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) doped TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by the sol-gel method using 2-hydroxylethylammonium formate as an ionic liquid. All the prepared samples were calcined at 500 °C and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET surface area determination, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR) techniques. The studies revealed that transition metal (TM) doped nanoparticles have smaller crystalline size and higher surface area than pure TiO2. Dopant ions in the TiO2 structure caused significant absorption shift into the visible region. The results of...
