    Abstract
Medical images contain human body pictures and used widely in diagnosis and surgical purposes [1]. Compression is needed for medical images for some applications such as profiling patient's data or transmission systems Due to the importance of the information of medical images, lossless or visually lossless compression preferred. Lossless compression mainly consists of transformation and encoding steps. On the other hand, hardware implementation of lossless compression algorithm accelerates real time tasks such as online diagnosis and telemedicine. Lossless JPEG, JPEG-LS and lossless version of JPEG2000 are few well known methods for lossless compression. This paper is focused on the...

Approximate Computing for Image Coding in JPEG Format

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Partovi Hajidehi, Abbas (Author) ; Jahangir, Amir Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Approximate computing techniqes, as well as recalling (or Memoization) previous instractions in the processor, are relatively new ways to reduce power consumption and execution time. By reusing the results of previous calculations and data or estimating new values (using an in-processor auxiliary hardware) based on previous data and the behavior of the program or data, the concept of the principle of proximity of references can be accepted with acceptable accuracy and according to the data type. Duplication or dependence on previous data) and depending on the type of program running, use all or part of the previous results. In contrast, the traditional method relies on calculating and...

A proper transform for satisfying benford's law and its application to double JPEG image forensics

    , Article 2012 IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology, ISSPIT 2012, 12 December 2012 through 15 December 2012 ; 2012 , Pages 240-244 ; 9781467356060 (ISBN) Taimori, A ; Razzazi, F ; Behrad, A ; Ahmadi, A ; Babaie-Zadeh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
This paper presents a new transform domain to evaluate the goodness of fit of natural image data to the common Benford's Law. The evaluation is made by three statistical fitness criteria including Pearson's chi-square test statistic, normalized cross correlation and a distance measure based on symmetrized Kullback-Leibler divergence. It is shown that the serial combination of variance filtering and block 2-D discrete cosine transform reveals the best goodness of fit for the first significant digit. We also show that the proposed transform domain brings reasonable fit for the second, third and fourth significant digits. As an application, the proposed transform domain is utilized to detect...

    Quantization-unaware double JPEG compression detection

    , Article Journal of Mathematical Imaging and Vision ; Volume 54, Issue 3 , 2016 , Pages 269-286 ; 09249907 (ISSN) Taimori, A ; Razzazi, F ; Behrad, A ; Ahmadi, A ; Babaie Zadeh, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The current double JPEG compression detection techniques identify whether or not an JPEG image file has undergone the compression twice, by knowing its embedded quantization table. This paper addresses another forensic scenario in which the quantization table of a JPEG file is not explicitly or reliably known, which may compel the forensic analyst to blindly reveal the recompression clues. To do this, we first statistically analyze the theory behind quantized alternating current (AC) modes in JPEG compression and show that the number of quantized AC modes required to detect double compression is a function of both the image’s block texture and the compression’s quality level in a fresh...

    Abstract
In this paper, we present a JPEG decoder implemented in our ODYSSEY design methodology. We start with an object-oriented JPEG decoder model. The total operation from modeling to implementation is done automatically by our EDA tool-set in about 10 hours. The resultant system is a JPEG decoder ASIP whose hardware part is implemented on FPGA logic blocks and software part runs on a MicroBlaze processor. This ASIP can be extended by software routines to implement the motion JPEG or MPEG2 decoding algorithms. We implemented our system on ML402 FPGA-based prototype board. Experimental results show that our ASIP implementation is comparable to other approaches while our approach enables quick and...

    Abstract
Recompression is a prevalent form of multimedia content manipulation. Different approaches have been developed to detect this kind of alteration for digital images of well-known JPEG format. However, they are either limited in performance or complex. These problems may arise from different quality level options of JPEG compression standard and their combinations after recompression. Inspired from semantic and perceptual analyses, in this paper, we suggest a part-level middle-out learning strategy to detect double compression via an architecturally efficient classifier. We first demonstrate that singly and doubly compressed data with different JPEG coder settings lie in a feature space...

    Abstract
In this paper we present an adaptive method for image compression that is based on complexity level of the image. The basic compressor/de-compressor structure of this method is a multilayer perceptron artificial neural network. In adaptive approach different Back-Propagation artificial neural networks are used as compressor and de-compressor and this is done by dividing the image into blocks, computing the complexity of each block and then selecting one network for each block according to its complexity value. Three complexity measure methods, called Entropy, Activity and Pattern-based are used to determine the level of complexity in image blocks and their ability in complexity estimation...

    Abstract
In this paper, an algorithm for image coding based on a sparse 3-dimensional Discrete Cosine Transform (3D DCT) is studied. The algorithm is essentially a method for achieving a sufficiently sparse representation using 3D DCT. The experimental results obtained by the algorithm are compared to the 2D DCT (used in JPEG standard) and wavelet db9/7 (used in JPEG2000 standard). It is experimentally shown that the algorithm, that only uses DCT but in 3 dimensions, outperforms the DCT used in JPEG standard and achieves comparable results (but still less than) the wavelet transform. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009

    Abstract
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consume energy for their sensing, computation, and communication. To extend the lifetime of the network, sensor nodes are equipped with energy storage devices. Recharging of their batteries is impossible in most applications. Therefore, energy consumption needs to be monitored and limited to extend the high performance operation of the network. In this network, the communication module consumes the highest amount of energy. This paper demonstrates that among several methods offered to reduce the energy consumption, data compression has the highest effect on the energy usage by reducing the number of bits to be broadcasted. To determine the energy efficiency of...

A devised approach to optimize color space transformation for image compression

    , Article 2012 20th Telecommunications Forum, TELFOR 2012 - Proceedings ; 2012 , Pages 1737-1740 ; 9781467329842 (ISBN) Imany, P ; Yazdanpanah, M ; Miran, S ; Showkatbakhsh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A significant step in color image compression is to apply a color space transformation to the original RGB image to concentrate most of its energy in one plane. Standard JPEG-based compression methods utilize predefined transformations like RGB to YCbCr. In this paper, a devised algorithm is proposed to optimize the transformation for each image. The algorithm iteratively increases the energy concentration by optimizing a novel cost function while limiting the matrix determinant to a bounded region

Closure of sets: A statistically hypersensitive system for steganalysis of least significant bit embedding

    , Article IET Signal Processing ; Volume 5, Issue 4 , July , 2011 , Pages 379-389 ; 17519675 (ISSN) Khosravirad, S. R ; Eghlidos, T ; Ghaemmaghami, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This study introduces a new scheme for steganalysis of the least significant bit (LSB) embedding, based on the idea of closure of sets (CoS), which is independent of the type of cover signal, applicable to both spatial and transform domains. The CoS is referred to as some special subsets that could be found in a common space whose elements relate to higher-order statistical properties of the signal. The proposed scheme is used for steganalysis of the LSB steganography of greyscale TIFF and JPEG images and audio signals, employing a set of accurate and monotone features that are extracted based on the CoS definition. It is shown that significant improvement to the detection accuracy in...

    Abstract
This paper proposes an image watermarking scheme for copyright protection based on Independent Component Analysis (ICA). In the suggested scheme, embedding is carried out in cumulative form in spatial domain and ICA is used for watermark extraction. For extraction there is no need to access the original image or the watermark, and extraction is carried out only with two watermarked images. Experimental results show that the new method has better quality than famous methods [1], [2], [3] in spatial or frequency domain and is robust against various attacks. Noise addition, resizing, low pass filtering, multiple marks, gray-scale reduction, rotation, JPEG compression, and cropping are some...
