Abstract
A tanks-in-series model was applied for mathematical modeling of the unsteady state performance of 70 and 100 liters airlift bioreactor for the production of lactic acid by fermentation. A set of first-order differential equations for the material balances of micro-organism, substrate, product, and dissolved oxygen around hypothetically well mixed stages was solved simultaneously utilizing computer program in MATLAB. The kinetic model utilized considered the effect of two substrates (glucose and dissolved oxygen) on the growth rate. The effect of air velocity on the lactic acid production was investigated. The fabrication of a suitable scaffold material is one of the major challenges for bone tissue engineering. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is one of the most favorable matrix materials in bone tissue engineering owing to its biocompatibility and biodegradability. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/poly(vinyl acetate-. co-vinyl alcohol) [P(VAc-. co-VA)] blends as new transparent film packaging materials were prepared at various blend compositions and different vinyl alcohol contents. The blends and pure PLA were irradiated by gamma rays to investigate the extent of changes in the packaging material during gamma ray sterilization process. The miscibility of the blends was dependent on the blend composition and vinyl alcohol content; gamma irradiation had little effect on the extent of miscibility. Abstract
The oxygen-barrier properties of poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/poly(vinyl acetate-co-vinyl alcohol) [P(VAc-co-VA)] were investigated. P(VAc-co-VA)s with vinyl alcohol (VA) contents of 5, 10, and 15 mol % were prepared with the acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of poly(vinyl acetate). The obtained copolymers with various contents of VA were blended with PLA at 5/95, 10/90, and 15/85 compositions. Films of the blends were prepared by a solution-casting method with chloroform as the cosolvent. Although the blend with 5% VA in the copolymer appeared to be miscible, the blends with 10 and 15% VA content in the copolymer were immiscible, as verified by dynamic mechanical analysis. Protein capturing on polymeric substrate of microfluidic devices is a key factor for the fabrication of immunoassay with high sensitivity. In this work, simple and versatile technique of electrospinning was used to produce electrospun nanofibrous membranes (e.NFMs) with high surface area as a substrate for microfluidic-based immunoassay to increase sensitivity. Abstract
In this study, polyaniline nanoparticles (PANI NPs) in emeraldine base (EB) form were prepared by a modified method and characterized by FTIR and UV–vis spectroscopies. The average size of the nanoparticles was 140 nm measured by DLS method. The nanoparticles were embedded into polylactic acid (PLA) nanofibers prepared by electrospinning method. It was found that inclusion of PANI NPs in PLA resulted in reduced diameter of the fibers during the electrospinning process. Abstract
In this study, active poly lactic acid (PLA) films containing 0, 10, 20 and 40% w/w propolis extract (PE), as active agent, were developed. A high amount of phenolic content (PC) was measured in PE. The antioxidant effect of active PLA films was determined by measuring the PC of sausage slices after 0, 2 and 4 days storage at refrigerator. Results showed that phenolic compounds of PE were released from PLA films in quantities proportional to PE concentration. Disc diffusion test indicated that PE showed an inhibitory effect against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterial species but was more effective against gram-positive species. Abstract
A drug delivery system based on poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels containing ibuprofen-loaded poly (lactic acid) (PLA) microspheres was developed to improve the release kinetics of this model drug. Gamma-irradiation and freeze-thawing were applied to prepare poly (vinyl alcohol) hydrogels. Properties and morphology of these composite hydrogels were investigated using FTIR, DSC, and SEM. In vitro release indicated that entrapment of the microspheres into the PVA hydrogels causes a reduction in both the release rate and the initial burst effect. PLA microspheres entrapped into the PVA hydrogels showed more suitable controlled release kinetics for drug delivery

Abstract
In this study, EVAc/PLA/organo clay nanocomposites were prepared via solution mixing method. The SEM images were used to investigate the morphology of nanocomposites revealing no phase separation or agglomeration of disperse phase in EVAc/PLA blends and nanocomposites. SAXS spectra confirmed the intercalated morphology of nanocomposites. Soil burial test were carried out and the rate of degradation of the samples were measured indirectly.
