    Abstract
This paper presents a new landslide-generated wave (LGW) model based on incompressible Euler equations with Savage-Hutter assumptions. A two-layer model is developed including a layer of granular-type flow beneath a layer of an inviscid fluid. Landslide is modeled as a two-phase Coulomb mixture. A well-balanced second-order finite volume formulation is applied to solve the model equations. Wet/dry transitions are treated properly using a modified non-linear method. The numerical model is validated using two sets of experimental data on subaerial and submarine LGWs. Impulsive wave characteristics and landslide deformations are estimated with a computational error less than 5 %. Then, the...

    Abstract
This paper represents a numerical study on the effects of landslide initial submergence and its geotechnical and rheological properties on the characteristics of landslide-generated waves (LGWs) and landslide deformation. A number of 117 numerical experiments are performed using a two-layer Coulomb Mixture Flow (2LCMFlow) model on a real-sized numerical flume as a simplified cross section of the Maku dam reservoir, located in the Northwest of Iran. Three different initial locations are considered for landslide representing a subaerial (SAL), a semi-submerged (SSL), and a submarine (SML) landslide. Based on the numerical results, the majority of SMLs and in some cases SSLs generate tsunami...

    Abstract
Various approaches have been developed by researchers to predict earthquake induced landslide displacements. This study evaluates the applicability of these approaches on sandy slopes. For this purpose, nine physical models are constructed inside a rigid box and thirty-six shaking table tests are conducted. Dynamic responses are then converted to the full scale model by applying similitude laws. Five statistical criteria are applied to compare the measured and predicted displacements and evaluate the precision of the approaches. By combining the outcomes and using a scoring procedure, the approaches are scored. Consequently, the approaches of Fotopoulou and Pitilakis [23] and Hsieh and Lee...

    Abstract
Underwater landslide can trigger impulsive waves with high amplitude and run-up, which may cause substantial damage. In this work, the experimental investigations are performed to study the impulsive wave characteristics caused by underwater landslides. The effects of landslide geometry and kinematics on wave characteristics are studied by performing 84 laboratory experiments. The influences of thickness, volume and shape of failure mass on the characteristics of initial wave are discussed. The impacts of water body conditions such as the slope of sliding bed and the initial submergence of underwater landslide are also examined. The present experimental data as well as the available data in...

    Abstract
This paper presents an integrated two-dimensional numerical framework for simulating rainfall-induced landslides from instability initiation to post-failure flow. To describe the entire process, three steps are considered in this study: (1) a coupled hydrostability analysis which detects the failure plane using the Finite Element Method (FEM) (pre-failure stage); (2) computing the local rheology of the failed mass (wet sandy soil) based on the water saturation at the onset of failure using the saturation-based rheological model (transition stage); and (3) a continuum-based propagation analysis which solves the flow of the wet material employing the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH)...

    Abstract
This paper studies the influence of burial depth on slope response and pipe performance under earthquake induced landslide. Three physical models are constructed and tested using 1 g shaking table device. The slope is divided into four sections as toe, lower and upper sections of the slope face and crest. The pips which perpendicularly cross the slope are embedded at these positions in three burial depths to demonstrate burial depth effect in each section. According to the experiments, dynamic slope response which moderately develops at deeper depths at toe and lower section, displays a clear downtrend at upper section and crest. Also, the pipe response depends on pipe route and slope...

    Abstract
Power systems are stretched across thousands of miles of diverse territories, often in remote locations, to generate and transfer the energy to geographically dispersed customers. The system is therefore subjected to a wide range of natural hazards which could potentially damage critical system components and cause interruption of electricity supply in some areas. To improve system resilience against natural hazards, management frameworks are required to identify hazardous areas and prioritize reinforcement activities in order to take the most out of the limited resources.Landslide is a natural disaster that involves the breakup and downhill flow of rock, mud, water, and anything caught in...

Effects of Slope Instability Caused by Earthquake on Buried Pipelines

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yousefi Sigari, Siamak (Author) ; Jafarzadeh, Fardin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Buried pipelines might pass slopes that are stable in static condition but slope dicplacements due to dynamic loading can result in pipeline failure. There are various factors that influence 3D slope stability under seismic loading condition. In this dissertation , we used finite element software ABAQUS (ver.6.10) to study pipeline performance in such condition. Dynamic analysis on pipe with burial depth of 1.5m that passes a 3D slope was performed by using the time history of sinusidinal loading. Boundary conidion of slope and pipe affects the slope dicplacement and pipeline performance. In different routes that pipe passes slope, pipeline response to slope displacement has been compared...

    Abstract
In this work, a two-dimensional fourth-order Boussinesq-type numerical model is applied to estimate the impact of landslide-generated waves in dam reservoirs. This numerical model has recently been extended for simulating subaerial landslides. The extended model is validated using available three-dimensional experimental data, and a good agreement is obtained. The numerical model is then employed to investigate the impact of landslide-generated waves in two real cases, the Maku and Shafa-Roud dam reservoirs in the northwestern and the north of Iran, respectively. Generated wave heights, wave run-up, maximum wave height above dam crest, and dam overtopping volume have been estimated for each...

Landslide Hazard Zonation of Mazandaran Province With Emphasis on Micro-Zonation of Powerhouses in Mazandaran Province Against Landslide Hazard

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taghikhani, Parastoo (Author) ; Haeri, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Landslides, like earthquakes, floods, and volcanoes, are important natural disasters that occur frequently in the mountainous and high regions of our country, especially in the Alborz and Zagros regions, which induce considerable damages. Various factors such as topography, lithology, weather conditions, hydrology, tectonics, earthquakes, and various human activities are effective factors in the instability of natural and man-made slopes. Not one factor can cause instability in slops, however, a combination of the named factors may cause landslides. Therefore, knowing the factors affecting the occurrence of landslides and identifying different areas in terms of sensitivity to their...

Lattice Boltzmann method for simulating impulsive water waves generated by landslides

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Vol. 21, issue. 2 , 2014 , p. 318-328 ; 1026-3098 Pak, A ; Sarfaraz, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Impulsive water waves generated by landslides impose severe damage on coastal areas. Very large mass ows in the ocean can generate catastrophic tsunamis. Preventing damage to dams and coastal structures, and saving the lives of local people against landslide-generated waves, has become an increasingly important issue in recent years. Numerical modeling of landslide-generated waves is a challenging subject in CFD. The reason lies in the difficulty of determining the interaction between the moving solids and sea water, which causes complicated turbulent regimes around the moving mass and at the water surface. Submarine or aerial types of landslide can further complicate the problem. Up to now,...

    Abstract
Landslides have disastrous influence on buried pipeline operation. In order to overcome this phenomenon, many retrofitting solutions have been proposed in literature and practice. This paper concentrates on the solutions which deal with pipe thickness change and rerouting method. As an answer to this,ABAQUS FE program has been used for numerical modeling. Soil-pipe interaction was modeled as hard and frictional contact in normal and tangential directions respectively. Typical geotechnical parameters of Tehran soil and predicted acceleration time history, compatible with Tehran geological condition, have been introduced to program for numerical calculations. Usefulness of two basic proposed...

    Abstract
A two-dimensional depth-integrated numerical model is developed using a fourth-order Boussinesq approximation for an arbitrary time-variable bottom boundary and is applied for submarine-landslide-generated waves. The mathematical formulation of model is an extension of (4,4) Padé approximant for moving bottom boundary. The mathematical formulations are derived based on a higher-order perturbation analysis using the expanded form of velocity components. A sixth-order multi-step finite difference method is applied for spatial discretization and a sixth-order Runge-Kutta method is applied for temporal discretization of the higher-order depth-integrated governing equations and boundary...
