    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 16, Issue 2 D , 2009 , Pages 145-156 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Zandi, H ; Bavafa, M ; Chamanzar, M. R ; Khorasani, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
In this paper, an analysis of the harmonic contents of the optical output power for an in-plane single mode laser diode is performed, and the results are described in detail. In the first step, the absolute value of power for each harmonic is obtained in terms of various laser diode parameters, and the variations of external parameters, such as modulation current, bias current and frequency, are discussed. The analysis is done by direct solution of the rate equations of an arbitrary laser diode for carrier and photon densities. It is known that the optical power has a nonlinear dependence on frequency, and the maximum optical power of each harmonic is attained in its resonance frequency. The...

Theory of optimal mixing in directly modulated laser diodes

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 16, Issue 2 D , 2009 , Pages 157-162 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Khorasani, S ; Cabon, B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Using a simple nonlinear model based on rate equations, and by employing a harmonic balance method, we develop a theory of optimal mixing in directly modulated semiconductor laser diodes. We perform a consistent numerical solution to the mixing in laser diodes to the arbitrary accuracy and intermodulation index (m, n). Through numerical computations we demonstrate that there is an optimal bias in mixing, corresponding to a relaxation frequency, fr, coinciding with the subcarrier frequency, f1, at which the mixing power is maximized nearly simultaneously for all intermodulation products, fmn. In terms of increasing the signal's current amplitude, it will be shown that it would result in a...

    Optical Transmission of UWB Signals

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Jazayerifar, Mahmoud (Author) ; Salehi, Javad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis we examine and study the transmission of Ultra Wide Band (UWB) signals over single mode fiber in a radio over fiber system. We begin by developing mathematical model for the key optical components employed in radio over fiber systems. The authenticity of these models is verified with experimental results. Following the above models as well as experiment results, the transmission of UWB signals over optical fiber is investigated. The impact of limited operating bandwidth and nonlinearity of the electrical to optical transfer function on UWB signals is examined. Two types of UWB signals, namely, multi-band orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) and impulse radio...

Laser diode modulation under large signal conditions

    , Article 2013 21st Iranian Conference on Electrical Engineering ; May , 2013 , Page(s): 1 - 5 ; 9781467356343 (ISBN) Ahmadian, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Large signal behavior of the Laser Diode is analyzed with the aim of finding a qualitative relationship between modulation amplitude and the change in the shape of its transfer function. It is found that, at quasi-static conditions, increasing the amplitude of the modulating signal smoothes out the original piecewise-linear transfer function of the diode. It further shifts the now smoothed knee point to lower DC currents. As the frequency increases, however, these effects become less and less pronounced. In addition, the transfer function becomes rather wavy due to the failure of current density to reach the saturation level necessary for adequate stimulated emission. At even higher...

Photoacoustic signal enhancement: Towards utilization of low energy laser diodes in real-time photoacoustic imaging

    Abstract
In practice, photoacoustic (PA) waves generated with cost-effective and low-energy laser diodes, are weak and almost buried in noise. Reconstruction of an artifact-free PA image from noisy measurements requires an effective denoising technique. Averaging is widely used to increase the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of PA signals; however, it is time consuming and in the case of very low SNR signals, hundreds to thousands of data acquisition epochs are needed. In this study, we explored the feasibility of using an adaptive and time-efficient filtering method to improve the SNR of PA signals. Our results show that the proposed method increases the SNR of PA signals more efficiently and with much...

Fibre position effects on the operation of opto-pair fibre displacement sensors

    , Article Optics and Laser Technology ; Volume 43, Issue 4 , 2011 , Pages 814-819 ; 00303992 (ISSN) Jafari, R ; Golnabi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this article, two optical-fibre probes used in displacement measurements are reported. In one arrangement, two optical fibres with protective buffer jackets are placed together, while in the second arrangement, the protective buffer jackets are removed and the two fibres are placed with the claddings in contact, with a concomitant smaller centrecentre distance. As the core and cladding diameters are the same in both probes, the effect of the centrecentre distance on double-fibre designs can be investigated. The reflected output powers are recorded for the probes as a function of the axial distance from a reflective surface. A theoretical model is also implemented, which considers the...

    Abstract
The nonlinear characteristic of an laser diode, LD, impacts on the performance of optical wireless systems using OFDM(orthogonal frequency division multiplexing). First, the influence of the nonlinear characteristic on bit-error performance is analyzed using a high power LD (LML-808.7B-XX). Next, the paper proposes a pre-distorter to compensate the nonlinearities. Finally, the coherent optical OFDM (CO-OFDM) system is considered and the performance without linearization and after linearization is analyzed via simulations in an AWGN (additive white Gaussian noise) environment. It is shown that LD nonlinearity can significantly degrade the performance. However, it is demonstrated that this...

    , Article Journal of Lightwave Technology ; Volume 26, Issue 15 , 2008 , Pages 2594-2603 ; 07338724 (ISSN) Jazayerifar, M ; Cabon, B ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper we examine the transmission of two types of ultra-wideband (UWB) signals, multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) and impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB), over single mode fiber at 1550 nm. In order to investigate the impact of optical components such as laser diode, external modulator and single mode fiber on UWB signals, we develop mathematical models for these components. These models are experimentally verified and corresponding numerical parameter values are obtained by experiment. Using these models we discuss the transmission of two types of UWB signals over single mode fiber. A new figure of merit namely distortion factor is defined. Using this...

Analytical study of binary differential impulse radio-ultra wide band over single-mode fibre systems using two receiver structures

    , Article IET Communications ; Volume 3, Issue 2 , 2009 , Pages 309-320 ; 17518628 (ISSN) Jazayerifar, M ; Salehi, J. A ; Cabon, B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A binary differential impulse radio-ultra wide band (IR-UWB) communication scheme over a single-mode optical fibre is examined. For a receiver structure, the conventional electrical receiver as well as an optical receiver structure, which is similar to the optical receiver used for digital, optically phase-modulated differential phase shift keying, are considered. The optical receiver can alleviate the IR-UWB receiver implementation challenges and it is studied for the first time in the context of IR-UWB. Considering various important noises, for example, phase noise, laser intensity noise, thermal noise and shot noise, analytical expressions for the error probability of the aforementioned...
