    Abstract
Friction stir processing (FSP) of high softening-temperature materials such as nickel-based superalloys is considered to be difficult. Laser heating of a localised area ahead of the FSP tool was used to provide sufficient plasticity during the FSP of IN738LC nickel-based superalloy. The stir zone (SZ) microstructure of the friction stir processed and laser-assisted friction stir processed were characterised. Laser-assisted friction stir processing (LAFSP) produced a defect-free pass, but FSP resulted in generation of a discontinuity in the SZ. Both lower volume fraction of partially dissolved γ′ precipitates and coarser grain structure of SZ in LAFSP led to more ductility of the SZ material...

    , Article 6th EAGE Saint Petersburg International Conference and Exhibition ; 7-10 April , 2014 , Pages 594-598 ; ISBN: 9781632665393 Bazargan, M ; Koohian, A ; Jalalyfar, H ; Habibpour, M ; Shahvar, M. P ; Madani, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper is presenting the data on interactions between Fiber laser and shale. With this obvious goal that is dependent on improving the efficiency of laser power. The idea of selecting shale sample was because of variety of this rock type in Iranian oil and gas formations. In the experiment, a long pulsed laser beam was arranged to drill and propagate surfaces, in the opposite direction to the earth gravity, and it was used to drill hole from the top to the bottom of cylindrical Shale rock. The heat that been induced from the Fiber laser is absorbed in the direct surfaces in front and cause heat flux generation inside of rock texture. The specific heat transfer inside of shale sample can...

Analytical prediction of the temperature field in laser assisted machining

    , Article Procedia CIRP, 31 May 2016 through 2 June 2016 ; Volume 46 , 2016 , Pages 575-578 ; 22128271 (ISSN) Kashani, M. M ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Razavi, R. S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Laser assisted machining (LAM) is a promising technology for machining hard to cut materials. In most experimental cases, LAM is undergone in two stages; first, the temperature at the material removal point (Tmr) is tuned by adjusting laser parameters and next, the cutting tool is engaged. Introduction of highly localized heat energy to the workpiece makes the modeling of this process very complicated. Hence, an analytical model for the first stage of the process - rather than multiple experiments or FE modelling - would be beneficial. This article presents an analytical solution to the transient, temperature field in a rotating cylinder subject to a localized laser heat source. The...

An efficient scanning algorithm for improving accuracy based on minimising part warping in selected laser sintering process

    , Article Virtual and Physical Prototyping ; Volume 14, Issue 1 , 2019 , Pages 59-78 ; 17452759 (ISSN) Manshoori Yeganeh, A ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Khodaygan, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In the selective laser sintering (SLS) method, layers of powder are scanned by a laser beam and sintered. The thermal gradients created by laser heating and the subsequent cooling of the sintered sections results in thermal stresses and part warping in the final part. Thermal gradients are dependent on the scanning algorithm, in particular, the scan vector length. In this work, an efficient scanning algorithm for the SLS process is presented with the aim to minimise the part warping in the final part due to thermally induced residual stresses, while maintaining the production time at a minimum. The proposed algorithm is implemented in a finite element simulation and scanning parameters...

    Abstract
Polymer sintering is not only a well-established procedure for producing functional polymeric parts, but it is also the basis for the relatively new additive manufacturing technique, selective laser sintering. Although studying the impact of thermo-oxidative degradation during sintering has significant practical importance, few studies have focused on this aspect of the sintering process. In the present work, we have investigated the active thermo-oxidative degradation mechanisms during sintering of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) particles, the conditions that promote them, and their respective impact on the morphological evolution of the polyethylene particles. To perform a comprehensive...

    Abstract
Recent advances in material issues for Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) process are presented. The concept is to decrease the powder particle size with the aim of enhancing the sintering kinetics and improving the surface quality of the produced parts. The outcome is particularly suitable for overcoming existing limitations with the rapid tooling, e.g. manufacturing of mould inserts for injection moulding and die casting, by the DMLS process. The powder composition was adapted near to the conventional P/M steels in order to get identical properties with a favourable price. Such novel powder material provides an opportunity to considerably reduce the product development time for P/M...

    Abstract
Cu-alloyed sintered steels are one of the main product groups in ferrous powder metallurgy (P/M). To expand the application of P/M technology to different sectors of industry and to create new market, it is believed that rapid prototyping and short serial production of sintered parts for functional testing is important. In the present work, rapid prototyping of sintered Fe-C-Cu steel powders by direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) process was studied. Fe, Fe-0.8%C, Fe-2%Cu, Fe-4%Cu, Fe-0.8%C-2%Cu-0.35%P powders were laser sintered in widely varying conditions. The densification and microstructural features of the sintered parts were evaluated. The results revealed that rapid prototyping of...

Densification and microstructural evolution during laser sintering of A356/SiC composite powders

    , Article Journal of Materials Science ; Volume 46, Issue 5 , 2011 , Pages 1446-1454 ; 00222461 (ISSN) Simchi, A ; Godlinski, D ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This article reports experimental results on laser sintering of A356 aluminum alloy and A356/SiC composite powders. Effects of scan rate, sintering atmosphere, hatch spacing, and SiC volume fraction (up to 20%), and particle size (7 and 17 μm) on the densification were studied. The phase formation and microstructural development were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Laser sintering under argon atmosphere exhibited higher densification compared to nitrogen. A faster sintering kinetics was observed as the scan rate decreased. Except at a low SiC content (5 vol%), the composite powders exhibited...

    Abstract
In the present work, we used direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) process to fabricate Al-SiC composite parts directly from a three-dimensional CAD model. Al-7Si-0.3Mg powders were blended with various amounts of SiC particles (5, 10, 15, 20 vol%) at two different sizes (7 and 17 μm) and subjected to direct laser sintering using a 200 W continuous wave CO2 laser beam at various scan rates. The densification and microstructural features of the laser-sintered parts were studied. It is shown that the highest density is obtained for the Al alloy-5% SiC (7 μm) composite powder. The melt stability is also found to be improved in the presence of SiC particles. The microstructure of the...

    Abstract
Sintering is a processing technique in which loose particles consolidate at elevated temperatures to form porous monoliths. Sintering is also a critical stage in recent additive manufacturing method like selective laser sintering. In this study, using an affordable alternative to X-ray tomography technique, we analyze the pore structure evolution in sintered parts made of nascent high-density polyethylene (HDPE) particles in terms of pore surface genus and pore surface curvature. Also, we investigate the underlying microstructural development and macroscopic properties of sintered parts. It is observed that pore structure and macroscopic permeability are strongly influenced by the...

    2011
    Abstract
Bismuth ferrite, BiFeO 3, is almost the only material that is simultaneously magnetic and a strong ferroelectric at room temperature. As a result it is the most investigated multiferroic material. In this study, bismuth ferrite thin films were deposited on silicon wafer (100) and glass by pulsed-laser deposition and their structural, optical, and electrical properties were measured. Our study indicates that Bi richness in these films can stimulate formation of oxygen vacancy in the system which in its turn leads to delocalization of carriers and a more intensified photoconductivity response. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed formation of BiFeO 3 (BFO), but it also showed formation of Bi 2O...
