    , Article Seventh International Conference on Damage and Fracture Mechanics: Damage and Fracture Mechanics VII, Maui, HI, 16 October 2002 through 18 October 2002 ; Volume 12 , 2003 , Pages 385-394 ; 14626055 (ISSN) Khaloo, A. R ; Khalighi, Y ; Irajian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2003
    Abstract
No-fines concrete has considerable drainage property and a relatively low strength. A wide aggregate grading range, with higher percentage of aggregate in lower bound, improves strength properties, however such grading results in lower drainage capability. The objective of this paper is to make high-performance single-sized No-fines Concrete mixes using polymer modification. An experimental program was carried out to study the parameters of water-cement ratio, aggregate-cement ratio, type of polymer, polymer content, setting time and curing period. The test specimens were 6×12 in. cylinders and were cast using hand rodding compaction in accordance with ASTM C 31-69. Initially a proper...

Damage Detection and Evaluation of Repair Materials and Techniques for Concrete Bridges

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karimi, Roya (Author) ; Joghataie, Abdoreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Poor maintenance of concrete bridges in the past years in Iran, caused serious damages, so most of them need rehabilitation. The majority of repaired members are exposed to repeated damage because compatibility of repair material to substrate concrete not considered as well as weather and loading conditions. This study attempts to improve the repair achievement and durability of concrete bridges. This investigation contains two phases: preliminary study and experimental phase. Preliminary study attends to detect different types of damages of concrete bridges and their causes along with their propagation. The next part of this study discusses about various types of repair materials. In...

Dynamic simulation and open-loop control of particle size distribution of styrene emulsion polymerization

    , Article Iranian Polymer Journal (English Edition) ; Volume 15, Issue 11 , 2006 , Pages 901-911 ; 10261265 (ISSN) Abedini, H ; Shahrokhi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
Particle size distribution determines the major end-use properties of latex produced by emulsion. Therefore simulation and control of particle size distribution are important in emulsion polymerization. The investigated system is styrene polymerization. The model for determination of particle size distribution is based on population balance, accounting for nucleation and growth phenomena. The population balance equation (PBE) is discretized respect to particle radius. The ordinary differential equations obtained from discretization of PBE, initiator and monomers mass balances and algebraic thermodynamic equations are solved simultaneously via MATLAB programme. The accuracy of the model has...

The Role of Surface Functionalization of Nanodiamond on the Vulcanization Kinetics and Network Structure of SBR

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mirzai Alamuti, Zoleikha (Author) ; Shojaie, Akbar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Elastomers are flexible polymers with various uses in different industries. But this materials dont havevalid usages without correct fillers. Today Nano technology has a main role in the industry. one of the important reasons is rubber quality improvement with adding just a little amount of this clays, opposite to Carbon Black. To achieve a high quality polymer composite, it is necessary to learn about physical and mechanical properties of nano clays and the interaction between Nano clays and matrix. Because of the effect of nano clays on vulcanization, this issue is noticeable . Nano diamond is a nanoclay used to improve rubber quality. But this method is new because of the complicated...

Design a System that is based on 2 to 5 MeV Electron Accelerator is used for Irradiation X Municipal Waste

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Faghihzadeh, Hadi (Author) ; Otookesh, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Designing a system based on 2 to 5 MeV electron accelerators for X radiation of urban waste.Nowadays , the use of ionizing radiation in two cases of treatment and removal of contaminants in the waste including; 1) Pathological hospital waste 2) leachate from buried urban waste, which is studied and examined in this project. Buried urban wastes begin to break down under aerobic and anaerobic processes, and as long as the materials are not changed into sustainable materials, these processes will continue and results in landfill gas and leachate. Gas is produce due to anaerobic processes and leachate which is produced through water infiltration (atmospheric precipitation) in the landfill or...

An Investigation on the Effect of Carbon Nanotubes on Physical and Mechanical Properties of Elastomers

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Saatchi, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Shojaei, Akbar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nanostructure matrials have reached a special place to be used in wide applications in recent decades. Among those carbon nanotubes have got much attention due to their excellent mechanical and electrical properties and their ability of developing new nanocomposites, though the issues of perfect dispersion and interaction with polymeric matrix hinders their development. In this work, recent advances on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and rubbers nanocomposites have been reviewed and the intrinsic potential of carbon nanotubes as reinforcing filler in elastomeric materials has been demonstrated. In experimental section in addition to CNTs, two different grades of CBs, i.e. N330 and super conductive...

The Effect of Adding Pozzolans on the Mechanical Properties of Latex-Modified Concretes and Investigating the Separation of Fibers in Them

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tohidloo, Mohammad (Author) ; Khalu, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This research investigates the impact of a new type of latex called Carboxylated Styrene Butadiene Rubber (XSBR) on the mechanical properties and permeability of latex-modified concrete. Latex-modified concretes offer numerous advantages, but a key challenge is the reduction in compressive strength, hindering their widespread use, especially in structural applications. In the initial phase of this study, the influence of XSBR latex is examined, and four different dosages of XSBR latex are incorporated into concrete. Keeping other parameters constant, especially the water-to-cement ratio, a comparison is made between different mix designs. All specimens are subjected to two different curing...

    Abstract
In recent years, applications of dielectrophoresis-based platforms have been recognized as effective and dependable approach to separate cells and bioparticles, suspended in different carrier fluids, based on particle size and electrical properties. In this study, a microfluidic device was fabricated by an unprecedented electrode pattern, and several experiments were performed to enrich samples including either of yeast, Escherichia coli, or latex particles. A chemical deposition-based method was employed for fabrication of microelectrodes, inducing nonuniform electric field required for dielectrophoresis-based separation. One major advantage of our employed method is low fabrication cost,...
