Extreme light absorption in a necking-free monolayer of resonant-size nanoparticles for photoelectrochemical cells

    , Article Journal of Optics (United Kingdom) ; Vol. 16, issue. 7 , 2014 ; ISSN: 20408978 Dabirian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Semiconductor photoelectrodes for water oxidation that absorb visible light usually have poor electronic transport properties and small optical absorption coefficients near their absorption edge. Therefore, innovative designs that lead to significant optical absorption in relatively thin layers of these compounds are highly desirable. Here, using full-field electromagnetic optical simulations, we demonstrate that a monolayer of resonant-size BiVO4 spheres can provide enhancement up to a factor of two in solar light absorption relative to dense planar layers. In this monolayer, BiVO4 spheres do not need to be interconnected; therefore, such monolayers are flexible and their fabrication...

Leaky Modes with Zero Group Velocity in Plasmonic Structures

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bagheri, Amir Masood (Author) ; Mehrany, Khashayar (Supervisor) ; Borji, Amir (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Achieving low group velocity of light can result progress in many fields. In this project by using complex time domain frequency, achieving method to zero group velocity is proposed. The proposed structures in this thesis consist of two lossless and lossy structures which by considering the modes with complex time frequency are excitable. Using leaky modes to analyze these structures, made them suitable as they can be excited from free space. Using slow light can lead to optimized devices because of the more interaction of light and matter which besides smaller devices too. Additionally slow light is being considered in designing optical memories, quantum computers, optical processors and...

    Abstract
In this paper, enhanced spatial and temporal shifts in the reflection of Gaussian wave packets from twodimensional photonic crystal waveguides supporting above-the-light-line leaky modes are studied, for the first time to our best knowledge. Particular attention is given to two important special cases, namely, harmonic Gaussian beams and Gaussian-pulse uniform plane waves. Analytical expressions are given for enhanced spatial and temporal shifts when the stationary phase approximation holds and the incident wave excites above-the-light-line leaky modes. The enhanced spatial and temporal shifts of Gaussian wave packets are thereby related to each other via the group velocity of the excited...
