    Abstract
The non-linear bubble dynamics equations in a compressible liquid have been modified by considering the effects of compressibility of both the liquid and the gas at the bubble interface. A new bubble boundary equation has been derived, which includes a new term resulting from the liquid bulk viscosity effect. The influence of this term has been numerically investigated by considering the effects of water vapour and chemical reactions inside the bubble. The results clearly indicate that the new term has an important damping role at the collapse, so that its consideration dramatically decreases the amplitude of the bubble rebounds after the collapse. This damping feature is more remarkable for...

Dependence of Surface Tension on Temperature and Density in the Interface of Liquid & Vapour

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khorsandi, Zahra (Author) ; Parsafar, GholamAbbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis dependency of surface tension ( ) on temperature (T ) and density (?), for spherical and nearly spherical fluids like argon has been investigated, using an effective Lennard – Jones (12,6) potential along with a new model according to which half of surface molecules are assumed to be in the liquid phase and the other half in the vapor phase, far from the critical point. The obtained result may be expressed as ? ? ? ( The 2 2= +C D C and D parameters are independent of T and ?). Such an investigation has also been done for many fluids, but by using the extended Lennard – Jones (12, 6, 3) function as the effective pair...

Investigation of humidity effect on the air refractive index using an optical fiber design

    , Article Journal of Applied Sciences ; Volume 11, Issue 16 , 2011 , Pages 3022-3027 ; 18125654 (ISSN) Mehrabani, A ; Golnabi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this study operation of an optical design based on the intensity modulation for the refractive index change has been described. The reported instrument measures the transmitted output power depending up on the medium refractive index in the light path of a fiber-to-fiber design. A liquid cell is located between the fibers in the light path and power variations for different cold and hot water levels in the cell are measured. By using a reference humidity meter the calibration curve representing the relative humidity (%RH) as a function of the transmitted output power is obtained. For the hot water with the final temperature of T = 32.7°C the output power range of 255.0 -313.OnW is...

Implementation of phase change thermodynamic probability for unsteady simulation of cavitating flows

    Abstract
The aim of this work is to investigate the non-equilibrium effects of phase change in cavitating flows. For this purpose, the concept of phase change thermodynamic probability is used along with homogeneous model to simulate two-phase cavitating flows. For simulation of unsteady behaviors of cavitation, which have practical applications, unsteady PISO algorithm based on the non-conservative approach is utilized. For multi-phase simulation, single-fluid Navier-Stokes equations, along with the volume fraction transport equation, are employed. In this paper, phase change thermodynamics probabilities and cavitation model is briefly summarized. Thus, derivation of the cavitation model, starting...

Simulation of two-phase liquid-vapor flows using a high-order compact finite-difference lattice Boltzmann method

    Abstract
A high-order compact finite-difference lattice Boltzmann method (CFDLBM) is extended and applied to accurately simulate two-phase liquid-vapor flows with high density ratios. Herein, the He-Shan-Doolen-type lattice Boltzmann multiphase model is used and the spatial derivatives in the resulting equations are discretized by using the fourth-order compact finite-difference scheme and the temporal term is discretized with the fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme to provide an accurate and efficient two-phase flow solver. A high-order spectral-type low-pass compact nonlinear filter is used to regularize the numerical solution and remove spurious waves generated by flow nonlinearities in smooth regions...

Equilibrium and non-equilibrium gas–liquid two phase flow in long and short pipelines following a rupture

    Abstract
The two-phase flow following the blowdown of pipeline carrying flashing liquid is numerically investigated by using thermodynamic equilibrium and non-equilibrium models. Model equations are solved numerically by the finite volume method. The values of fluxes at cell boundaries are obtained by AUSM+-up. To obtain proper values for the coefficients of dissipation, both single phase liquid and two phase shock tube problems are investigated. The transient release from the pressurized pipeline is studied for two cases of long and short pipes. Comparison of the predictions against experimental data reveals non-equilibrium model performs a little better than equilibrium model in the prediction of...

A non-equilibrium relaxation model for fast depressurization of pipelines

    Abstract
In this paper, transient depressurization of high pressure pipelines containing initially subcooled liquid is simulated numerically by using thermodynamic non-equilibrium and choking condition model. The numerical method relies on finite volume. The convective terms of cell boundaries are discretized by Advection Upstream Splitting Method (AUSM+ - up) with a proposal of partially implicit approach for source terms. Different void fraction correlations are applied to simulate two phase shock tubes as well as the depressurization process. By comparison between the present results and previous experimental data, the best void fraction correlation is introduced. The results indicate that the...
