Lubricating flow of thixotropic fluids in slipper-pad bearing: A numerical study

    , Article Nihon Reoroji Gakkaishi ; Volume 39, Issue 4 , 2011 , Pages 153-158 ; 03871533 (ISSN) Najmi, K ; Karimzadeh, M ; Sadeghy, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Laminar, two-dimensional flow of an incompressible thixotropic fluid obeying Moore's model is investigated numerically in a slipper-pad bearing using FVM method. Results will be presented addressing the effect of thixotropic properties and inclination angle on the pressure distribution and load-carrying capacity of the bearing. It is shown that the pressure distribution under the upper pad depends only on the buildup-to-breakdown ratio. It is also predicted that by increasing this ratio, the load-carrying capacity increases, but, the pressure distribution becomes more and more asymmetric with the maximum pressure shifting towards the outlet section of the bearing. Also, for any given set of...

Load carrying capacity of circular and annular plates using an arbitrary yield criterion

    , Article Computers and Structures ; Volume 80, Issue 23 , 2002 , Pages 1757-1762 ; 00457949 (ISSN) Aryanpour, M ; Ghorashi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, arbitrary rotational symmetric loadings on circular and annular plates have been discussed. In this way, an approach is introduced in order to compute the critical load factor for the imposed loadings. The considered plates are assumed to be made of materials obeying arbitrary yield criteria. It is shown that the new approach not only generates the solutions that exist in the literature, but also it can create solutions for cases that have not yet been solved by other methods. Of special attention is the case of von Mises criterion. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved

    Abstract
This paper focuses on the biomechanical aspects of human load carrying in order to provide a physiological framework for designing the more anthropometric assistive systems. An 8degrees-of-freedom musculoskeletal model with twenty functional muscle groups in the lower extremity was developed to simulate the movement in sagittal plane. Inverse dynamics based optimization approach was employed to estimate the excitation level of the muscles. Activation patterns of the muscles illustrate the importance role of the soleus in supporting of the body during load carrying. Also power distribution analysis of the muscles reveals that the plantar flexors of the ankle, extensors of the knee and hip...

    Abstract
Every year many people suffer from knee injuries. Previous studies on patients with knee injuries have shown that about 40% of knee injuries are Ligament injuries, and about 50% of the ligament injuries are the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries. Along with other methods, knee arthrometers are widely used to diagnose ACL injuries. In the current research, a knee arthrometer was designed and developed to provide a reliable and repeatable measurement of knee laxity under anteriorposterior applied loads. Testretest configurations to examine repeatability of the device resulted in less than 1.5-mm difference for more than 97% of tests under applied loads of up to 90 N. These tests...

A body biasing method for charge recovery circuits: Improving the energy efficiency and DPA-immunity

    , Article Proceedings - IEEE Annual Symposium on VLSI, ISVLSI 2010, 5 July 2010 through 7 July 2010 ; July , 2010 , Pages 195-200 ; 9780769540764 (ISBN) Khatir, M ; Ejlali, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Charge recovery is a promising concept to design (cryptographic) VLSI circuits with low energy dissipation. However, unsatisfactory designs of proposed logic cells degrade its theoretical efficiency significantly both in its energy consumption and the resistance against differential power analysis attacks (DPA-attacks). Short circuit dissipation and non-adiabatic discharging of capacitance loads are the two major sources of this degradation which are addressed in this paper. In order to reduce these dissipation significantly, we manipulate threshold voltage of circuits transistors by body biasing. To evaluate the efficiency of our method we select a common charge recovery logic called 2N2N2P...

Residual stresses in autofrettaged vessel made of functionally graded material

    , Article Engineering Structures ; Volume 31, Issue 12 , 2009 , Pages 2930-2935 ; 01410296 (ISSN) Haghpanah Jahromi, B ; Farrahi, G. H ; Maleki, M ; Nayeb Hashemi, H ; Vaziri, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We used an extension of the Variable Material Property method for materials with varying elastic and plastic properties to evaluate the residual stresses in an autofrettaged thick vessel made of functionally graded metal-ceramic composite. It is shown that the reinforcement of the metal vessel by ceramic particles, with an increasing ceramic volume fraction from inner to outer radius, increases the magnitude of compressive residual stresses at the inner section of an autofrettaged vessel and thus, could lead to better fatigue life and load-carrying capacity of the vessel. A parametric study is carried out to highlight the role of ceramic particle strength and spatial distribution, as well as...

    Abstract
Buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) have been spread widely, especially in high seismic hazard zones due to their excellent energy absorption capacity. BRBs are composed of a main load-carrying steel core restrained with other elements mostly made of concrete and steel casing to preserve it from buckling. Although BRBs provide excellent cyclic behavior, a problem is with their heaviness, which leads to difficulties such as installation and transportation. This study presents a numerical and experimental investigation on a BRB with a new proposed restraining system composed of concrete panels confined with partially carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips to reduce the weight of the...

    Abstract
An experimental investigation on the behavior of RC arches strengthened by glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites is presented. Twelve samples were tested in order to determine influence of arrangement and number of GFRP layers on RC arches having different steel reinforcement ratios. The arches were tested under centrally concentrated point load using displacement control condition. Load-deflection behavior, failure mode, GFRP debonding, angle between hinge formation and supports and crack propagation pattern are studied extensively. Based on test results, extrados strengthening is much more effective than intrados strengthening in increasing ultimate load carrying capacity which...

Relationship between failure behaviour and weld fusion zone attributes of austenitic stainless steel resistance spot welds

    , Article Materials Science and Technology ; Volume 24, Issue 12 , 2008 , Pages 1506-1512 ; 02670836 (ISSN) Marashi, P ; Pouranvari, M ; Sanaee, M. H ; Abedi, A ; Abootalebi, H ; Goodarzi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Resistance spot welding was used to join austenitic stainless steel sheets. Mechanical properties of the spot welds were evaluated using tensile shear test. Mechanical behaviour was described by peak load, failure energy and failure mode. The relationship between weld fusion zone attributes and failure behaviour was studied. Generally, it was observed that increasing fusion zone size is accompanied by an increase in load carrying capacity and energy absorption capability. However, when expulsion occurs, despite almost constant weld fusion zone size, energy absorption capability reduces significantly due to increase in electrode indentation depth. Considering the failure location and failure...

Distribution system reliability enhancement using optimal capacitor placement

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 2, Issue 5 , 2008 , Pages 621-631 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Etemadi, A. H ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Failure statistics of most utilities indicate that distribution systems make the greatest individual contribution to the unavailability of supply to customers. Optimal capacitor placement in distribution systems has a number of advantages such as reducing losses, improving voltage profile, improving power factor and so on. The conventional objective function of the optimal capacitor placement consists of the total cost of losses and investments. Since capacitors supply reactive loads locally, they improve the load-carrying capability of the lines and therefore play the same role as redundant lines. Thus, optimal capacitor placement can also improve the reliability indices of a distribution...

    Abstract
Background: Asymmetric lifting activities are associated with low back pain. Methods: A finite element biomechanical model is used to estimate spinal loads during one- and two-handed asymmetric static lifting activities. Model input variables are thorax flexion angle, load magnitude as well as load sagittal and lateral positions while response variables are L4-L5 and L5-S1 disc compression and shear forces. A number of levels are considered for each input variable and all their possible combinations are introduced into the model. Robust yet user-friendly predictive equations that relate model responses to its inputs are established. Findings: Predictive equations with adequate...

Biomechanical analysis for the study of muscle contributions to support load carrying

    Abstract
The objective of this study was to quantify individual muscle function differences between level walking and backpack load carriage at the same speed by using a muscle-actuated forward dynamics simulation. As experimental investigations have revealed that backpack loads of up to 64 per cent of an individual's body mass have little effect on the sagittal plane gait kinema-tics, further biomechanical analyses are necessary to investigate the contributions of individual muscle coordination strategies to achieve a given motor task by mechanical power generation, absorption, and transference to each body segment. A biomechanical framework consisting of a musculoskeletal model actuated by 18...
