Energy dissipation in saturated loose sand models in one and two-dimensional shaking table tests

    , Article 6th International Conference on Physical Modelling in Geotechnics, ICPMG'06, Hong Kong, 4 August 2006 through 6 August 2006 ; Volume 1-2 , 2006 , Pages 463-467 ; 041541587X (ISBN); 9780415415873 (ISBN) Jafarzadeh, F ; Hamidi, A ; Lotfiazad, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper the relation between dissipated energy and pore pressure is studied using 1 g shaking table test results. Toyoura sand is used for the physical models. Both one and two dimensional variable phase loadings are applied to the models. Shear work was calculated using accelerations and displacements and normalized to the mean effective stress. Pore water pressure was also normalized to the vertical effective stress. The results show that the pore pressure has a unique relationship to the shear work no matter whether the shaking is one or two dimensional. The results also show that the generated normalized pore pressure is independent of loading type and confinement. © 2006 Taylor &...

Application of piezoelectric and functionally graded materials in designing electrostatically actuated micro switches

    , Article Proceedings of the ASME Design Engineering Technical Conference, 15 August 2010 through 18 August 2010 ; Volume 4 , August , 2010 , Pages 613-620 ; 9780791844120 (ISBN) Hosseinzadeh, A ; Ahmadian, M. Abstract
In this research, a functionally graded microbeam bonded with piezoelectric layers is analyzed under electric force. Static and dynamic instability due to the electric actuation is studied because of its importance in micro electro mechanical systems, especially in micro switches. In order to prevent pull-in instability, two piezoelectric layers are used as sensor and actuator. A current amplifier is used to supply input voltage of the actuator from the output of the sensor layer. Using Hamilton's principle and Euler-Bernoulli theory, equation of motion of the system is obtained. It is shown that the load type (distributed or concentrated) applied to the microbeam from the piezoelectric...

    Abstract
Distributed generation connected with AC, DC, or hybrid loads and energy storage systems is known as a microgrid. Campus microgrids are an important load type. A university campus microgrids, usually, contains distributed generation resources, energy storage, and electric vehicles. The main aim of the microgrid is to provide sustainable, economical energy, and a reliable system. The advanced energy management system (AEMS) provides a smooth energy flow to the microgrid. Over the last few years, many studies were carried out to review various aspects such as energy sustainability, demand response strategies, control systems, energy management systems with different types of optimization...

Comparisons of lumbar spine loads and kinematics in healthy and non-specific low back pain individuals during unstable lifting activities

    Abstract
Evaluation of spinal loads in patients with low back pain (LBP) is essential to prevent further lumbar disorders. Many studies have investigated the relationship between lifting task variables and lumbar spine loads during manual lifting activities. The nature of the external load (stable versus unstable loads) is an important variable that has received less attention. Therefore, the present study aimed to measure trunk kinematics and estimate compressive-shear loads on the lumbar spine under lifting a 120 N stable load and 120 ± 13.63 N sensual unstable load in 16 healthy and 16 non-specific LBP individuals during lifting activities. The maximal lumbar loads were estimated using a...
