Anderson Impurity Model in Dirac Matter

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Mashkoori, Mahdi (Author) ; Jafari, Akbar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis we have been mainly interested in studying Single Impurity Anderson model (SIAM) in Dirac fermions. Although this model seems to be simple, the rich physics of SIAM can not be underestimated. In this thesis we were interested in Dirac materials, systems which their low energy excitations are described by Dirac equation. Therefore, considering Dirac material in two dimensions(2D), we briefly review the distinct features of one atom thick layer of carbon. In addition, we will explain the effective Hamiltonian of Bismuth near L point which is considered a three dimensional(3D) Dirac material. Because of very strong spin-orbit interaction, bismuth is a key element in topological...

RKKY interaction in heavily vacant graphene

    Abstract
Dirac electrons in clean graphene can mediate the interactions between two localized magnetic moments. The functional form of the RKKY interaction in pristine graphene is specified by two main features: (i) an atomic-scale oscillatory part determined by a wavevector → connecting the two valleys; with doping another longer range oscillation appears which arises from the existence of an extended Fermi surface characterized by a momentum scale kF; (ii) an algebraic Rα decay in large distances where the exponent α=-3 is a distinct feature of undoped Dirac sea in two dimensions. In this work, we investigate the effect of a few per cent vacancies on the above properties. Depending on the doping...

    Abstract
Elemental bismuth and its compounds host strong spin-orbit interaction which is at the heart of topologically non-trivial alloys based on bismuth. These class of materials are described in terms of 4x4 matrices at each v point where spin and orbital labels of the underlying electrons are mixed. In this work we investigate the single impurity Anderson model (SIAM) within a mean field approximation to address the nature of local magnetic moment formation in a generic Dirac Hamiltonian. Despite the spin-mixing in the Hamiltonian, within the Hartree approximation it turns out that the impuritys Green function is diagonal in spin label. In the three dimensional Dirac materials defined over a...

A density functional study of strong local magnetism creation on MoS 2 nanoribbon by sulfur vacancy

    Abstract
In this study a low-width MoS2 ribbon has been used for probing the electronic structure and local magnetic moment near vacancies. A theoretical study with the full-potential Density Functional Theory (DFT) approach (Wien2K code) have shown that when the dimension of MoS2 is reduced from 2-D to 1-D the nonmagnetic semi-conductor MoS2 becomes a magnetic conductor. Our study has shown that a vacancy on the S-edge with 50% coverage intensifies the magnetization of the edge of the MoS2 nanoribbon but such a vacancy on S-edge with 100% coverage causes this magnetic property to disappear. It is concluded that in both of them, there are positive or negative strong gradients of local magnetic moment...
