Impact of harmonics on power quality and losses in power distribution systems

    , Article International Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering ; Volume 5, Issue 1 , 2015 , Pages 166-174 ; 20888708 (ISSN) Ghorbani, M. J ; Mokhtari, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper investigates the harmonic distortion and losses in power distribution systems due to the dramatic increase of nonlinear loads. This paper tries to determine the amount of the harmonics generated by nonlinear loads in residential, commercial and office loads in distribution feeders and estimates the energy losses due to these harmonics. Norton equivalent modeling technique has been used to model the nonlinear loads. The presented harmonic Norton equivalent models of the end user appliances are accurately obtained based on the experimental data taken from the laboratory measurements. A 20 kV/400V distribution feeder is simulated to analyze the impact of nonlinear loads on feeder...

Reviewing the Current Situation of Kish Coral and Estimation of Damage Amount by Them (A Case study on Kish Island)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Joshaghani, Mina (Author) ; Gholami, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Coral reef waters are called rainforest. The importance of coral reef waters is related to their diversity and millions species. According to incremental development of Kish Island, specially the west part of this island contributed to Tourism industry which is affected by dredging, sediment discharge in coastal area, constructing waterfront, the flows close to the beach due to breakwater and eutrophication. This Island includes marine resources and many biodiversity .So the management of marine environment is needed to be considered. Iran as a rich country due to coral reefs is considered as a most valuable marine environment in Persian Gulf. The process of polluting Persian Gulf is...

An Economic-Financial Model for Response to Earthquake in Conditions of Uncertainty with a Case Study of an Earthquake Event in a Small Town

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bostanara, Maryam (Author) ; Eshghi, Kourosh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Annually Natural disasters make tremendous impacts on societies. Fatality rate of earthquake in Iran is almost more than all other disasters. There are numerous problems in disaster Management's of Iran and other countries. One of the disaster Management's phases is response phase which mostly depends on emergency processes, so most of papers working on this phase, plan for emergency state by using different techniques. All the studies seeking the response phase, try to reduce the loss of disaster by the use of immediate response to earthquake, pointing the disaster after occurrence. But Another point of view is to make loss reduction by precautious activities and plans. Actually, the loss...

Comparative Study of Life Cycle Cost of Steel and Concrete Building Systems Designed Based on Standard 2800 by Endurance Time Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mahdavi, Hamid (Author) ; Esmaeil Pourestekanchi, Homayun (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The actual value of structures should not be evaluated only based on initial cost, because failure cost and economical losses due to corrosion and natural hazards can be catastrophic. The aim of this research is Comparative study of life cycle cost of steel and concrete building systems designed based on standard 2800 by Endurance Time Method. These costs include initial cost and life cycle cost Due to the aftermath of the earthquake in the life of the structure. In this research, because it requires a lot nonlinear dynamic time history analysis, Endurance Time Method used which is both good accuracy and also drastically reduces the cost of computing-off. Selected models for the study, four,...

Pre-crisis Planning in Transportation Networks, Considering Immediate, Short-Run and Long-Run Losses: Case Study of the 2003 Bam Earthquake

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Salarpour, Mojtaba (Author) ; Poorzahedy, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Natural disasters take many lives each year and leave many others homeless, thereby occupy governments to restore previous conditions rather than deal with progress. Iran has also a worrisome record of natural disasters, and the unpreparedness of the parties involved turn each of such event into a disaster. The purpose of this study is to estimate more accurately the outcomes of severe earthquakes, and show its effect on the decisions which are made to mitigate them. The losses are classified into three groups of immediate, short-run and long-run, which are then measured by some common quantities. Using the 2003 Bam Earthquake as a reference, these quantities are used to measure the...

Probabilistic seismic loss estimation via endurance time method

    , Article Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration ; Volume 16, Issue 1 , 2017 , Pages 233-245 ; 16713664 (ISSN) Tafakori, E ; Pourzeynali, S ; Estekanchi, H. E ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Engineering Mechanics (IEM)  2017
    Abstract
Probabilistic Seismic Loss Estimation is a methodology used as a quantitative and explicit expression of the performance of buildings using terms that address the interests of both owners and insurance companies. Applying the ATC 58 approach for seismic loss assessment of buildings requires using Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA), which needs hundreds of time-consuming analyses, which in turn hinders its wide application. The Endurance Time Method (ETM) is proposed herein as part of a demand propagation prediction procedure and is shown to be an economical alternative to IDA. Various scenarios were considered to achieve this purpose and their appropriateness has been evaluated using...

Application of endurance time method in performance-based optimum design of structures

    , Article Structural Safety ; Volume 56 , September , 2015 , Pages 52-67 ; 01674730 (ISSN) Basim, M. C ; Estekanchi, H. E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2015
    Abstract
In this research, application of the Endurance Time (ET) method in performance-based design of structures with and without consideration of uncertainties is investigated and a practical optimum design procedure is proposed. The ET method is used as an analytical assessment tool because of its capabilities in response estimation with an affordable computational demand. In the first step of the proposed method, ET analysis is implemented in a multi-objective optimum design procedure in order to achieve a set of Pareto optimal designs. Optimization is conducted with respect to initial cost and expected life cycle cost using a deterministic approach. For each design alternative the median...
