    Abstract
A novel approach for highly sensitive detection of captopril was developed based on the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), in which FITC acts as the donor and Au NPs as the acceptor. The fluorescence intensity of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) was strictly quenched as a result of noncovalently adsorbed on Au NPs. Upon the addition of captopril, the fluorescence intensity of FITC turn-on due to the competition between captopril and FITC towards the surface of Au NPs. Under the optimum conditions, the fluorescence intensity of the released FITC displays a linear relationship in the range of 20 μg L-1 to...

Cubic nonlinear analysis of interaction between a surface wave and two interfacial waves in an open two-layer fluid

    Abstract
A third-order asymptotic analysis is conducted to study the three-dimensional resonant interaction between a monochromatic progressive surface wave and two oblique interfacial waves in an open, lightly viscous, two-layer fluid of intermediate depth. By solving the evolution equations of the waves, the short- and long-term behaviors of the interfacial waves are studied. The analysis provides a correction to the second-order theory. The results indicate that the third-order analysis predicts a much lower limit on the growth of the interfacial waves than the second-order theory. Furthermore, in the long term, viscous effects cause the interfacial wave amplitudes to approach a constant value....

    Abstract
A search for signatures of extra spatial dimensions in the diphoton invariant-mass spectrum has been performed with the CMS detector at the LHC. No excess of events above the standard model expectation is observed using a data sample collected in proton-proton collisions at √s=7TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.2fb -1. In the context of the large-extra-dimensions model, lower limits are set on the effective Planck scale in the range of 2.3-3.8TeV at the 95% confidence level. These limits are the most restrictive bounds on virtual-graviton exchange to date. The most restrictive lower limits to date are also set on the mass of the first graviton excitation in the...

Application of artificial neural network to estimate the fatigue life of shot peened Ti-6Al-4V ELI alloy

, Article Fatigue of Materials: Advances and Emergences in Understanding, Held During Materials Science and Technology 2010, MS and T'10, 17 October 2010 through 21 October 2010 ; 2010 , Pages 411-417 ; 9780470943182 (ISBN) Yavari, S. Abstract
An artificial neural network to predict the fatigue life, residual stress and Almen intensity of shot peened alloy Ti6Al4V ELI was developed. To minimize the prediction error, a feed forward model was used and the neural network was trained with back-propagation learning Algorithm. The results of this investigation show that a neural network with one hidden layer and five neurons in this layer will give the best performance. With this structure the network approaches to the desired error in the least time. Furthermore, it was concluded that there is a good agreement between the experimental data, the predicted values and the well-trained neural network. Therefore, the neural network has a...

Toward single-DNA electrochemical biosensing by graphene nanowalls

    Abstract
Graphene oxide nanowalls with extremely sharp edges and preferred vertical orientation were deposited on a graphite electrode by using electrophoretic deposition in an Mg 2+-GO electrolyte. Using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), reduced graphene nanowalls (RGNWs) were applied for the first time, in developing an ultra-high-resolution electrochemical biosensor for detection of the four bases of DNA (G, A, T, and C) by monitoring the oxidation signals of the individual nucleotide bases. The extremely enhanced electrochemical reactivity of the four free bases of DNA, single-stranded DNA, and double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) at the surface of the RGNW electrode was compared to electrochemical...
