    Abstract
In high speed machining of hard materials, tools with chamfered edge and materials resistant to diffusion wear are commonly used. In this paper, the influence of cutting edge geometry on the chip removal process is studied through numerical simulation of cutting with sharp, chamfered or blunt edges and with carbide and CBN tools. The analysis is based on the use of ALE finite element method for continuous chip formation process. Simulations include cutting with tools of different chamfer angles and cutting speeds. The study shows that a region of trapped material zone is formed under the chamfer and acts as the effective cutting edge of the tool, in accordance with experimental observations....

Sensorless control of non-salient PMSM using simultaneous injection of two HF signals

    , Article Conference Proceedings - IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition - APEC ; March , 2014 , p. 2463-2468 Ghazimoghadam, M. A ; Yaghoubi, M ; Tahami, F ; Bakhshai, A ; Jain, P. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In recent years sensorless techniques based on HF carrier injection have become very popular as they are capable to estimate rotor position in a wide speed range. They can provide precise control over interior PMSMs without the accompanying need for a position sensor. However, in surface-mounted PMSMs, the estimation of rotor position is only reliable at light loads due to the very small saliency arising from main flux saturation. The anisotropy caused by stator flux saturation is not necessarily in alignment with rotor position especially at heavy loads. In this paper a novel solution is proposed to make use of the sensorless scheme in a surface-mounted PMSM even at heavy loads

    Abstract
Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication is an important type of communication in the Internet-of-Things (IoT). How to send data in these high-density communications using relay selection can help improve the performance of this type of communication in various applications. In addition, the possibility of simultaneous use of different Radio Frequency (RF) interfaces helps to use the spectrum more efficiently. In this work, we try to further use machine communication RF equipment and improve the average data rate of networks in some applications such as the IoT, which have their own bandwidth requirements. Therefore, we provide an optimization algorithm for relay selection as well as the...

    Abstract
In this paper a general 2-D model of a large air-gap synchronous machine either with non-magnetic or magnetic core rotor is investigated and electrical characteristics of the machine are analytically calculated. Considering the general model, analytical equations for magnetic field density in different regions of the large air-gap machine are calculated. In addition, self and mutual inductances in the proposed model of the machine have been developed, which are the most important parameters in the electromagnetic design and transient analysis of synchronous machines. Finite element simulation has also been performed to verify the obtained results from the equations. Analytical results show...

Penetration-elimination method for five-axis CNC machining of sculptured surfaces

    , Article International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture ; Volume 47, Issue 10 , 2007 , Pages 1625-1635 ; 08906955 (ISSN) Hosseinkhani, Y ; Akbari, J ; Vafaeesefat, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
In this paper, a new tool positioning strategy for five-axis machining, called the penetration-elimination method (PEM), is introduced. The PEM gains from two innovative techniques that can considerably improve the computational efficiency during the calculation of the optimal tool orientations. The first technique includes developing a quantitative definition for the gouging concept and using this definition in conjunction with powerful numerical root-finder algorithms to determine the optimized tool orientations. The second technique dynamically detects the ineffective grid points and drops them from calculations and consequently takes a great role in reducing the computational burden. The...

    , Article Physics Letters, Section A: General, Atomic and Solid State Physics ; Volume 377, Issue 1-2 , December , 2012 , Pages 73-79 ; 03759601 (ISSN) Rasoolzadeh, A ; Tavazoei, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
This Letter tries to find the area in parameter space of a non-salient Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) in which chaos can occur. This area is briefly named as chaotic area. The predicted chaotic area is obtained by checking some conditions which are necessary for existence of chaos in a dynamical system. In this Letter, it is assumed that this machine is in the generator mode, and its model is based on direct and quadrature axis of stator voltages and currents. The information of the predicted area is used in non-chaotic maximum power control of torque in the machine

    Abstract
Effect of NaF on crystallization kinetics, microstructure, and mechanical properties of mica glass ceramics were investigated by the differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and microhardness tests. Non-isothermal DTA experiments showed that the crystallization activation energies of base glasses are changed in the range of 235-246 KJ/mol, while the crystallization activation energies of samples with addition of NaF are changed in the range of 263-367 KJ/mol. The increase of crystallization temperature is helpful for the increase of aspect ratio, and the microstructure of the glass ceramics becomes interconnected, which contributes...

Crystallization behavior of mica glass-ceramics with nanophase structure

    , Article Synthesis and Reactivity in Inorganic, Metal-Organic and Nano-Metal Chemistry ; Volume 42, Issue 3 , 2012 , Pages 420-423 ; 15533174 (ISSN) Ghasemzadeh, M ; Nemati, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The influence of Zr 2 on the crystallization behavior, microstructure, and machinability of SiO 2-Al 2O 3-MgO-K 2O-B 2O 3-F glasses was investigated. The crystallization of the glass-ceramic was markedly affected by addition of ZrO 2. These glasses crystallize more rapidly. The number of mica crystals increases, whereas the size of the mica crystals decreases drastically. Machining of these glass-ceramics was found to be good, as confirmed by a drilling test using conventional steel tools. Such mechanical properties are attributable to the microstructure of these glass-ceramics. Very fine crystals are homogeneously distributed in glass matrix

    Abstract
Energy usage of data centers is a challenging and complex issue because computing applications and data are growing so quickly that increasingly larger servers and disks are needed to process them fast enough within the required time period. In the past few years, many approaches to virtual machine placement have been proposed. This study proposes a new approach for virtual machine allocation to physical hosts. Either minimizes the physical hosts and avoids the SLA violation. The proposed method in comparison to the other algorithms achieves better results. Abstract
Traditional AI planners often suffer from their poor efficiency. There are many choice points in the planning process, but lack of information precludes proper decision. In this paper, we introduce a new method for adding automatic learning capability to a forward planning system. Our idea is based on a dynamic voting algorithm to choose the best action to proceed to the next state. In every planning cycle, applicable actions (i.e. those actions whose preconditions are satisfied in the current world state) vote to, and compete with each other. As a result of this voting, gradually more useful actions are chosen. This idea has been applied to the blocks world domain, and the preliminary...

Design, modeling and analysis of a single phase Brushless Doubly-Fed Generator

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Haji Mohammad Amini, Hashem (Author) ; Oraee Mirzamani, Hashem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, we consider design, modeling, and analysis of a single-phase Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine (BDFM). Generally, this type of machine is called the Brushless Doubly-Fed Induction Machine (BDFIM), that is a new class of induction machines. BDFM is a type of AC machines that requires two alternative power sources. One of the stators windings, called Power Winding, is connected to the network grid and the other one, which is called Control Winding, is connected via a converter, which is in the order of one-third of the nominal power of the machine, to the grid. Like the other types of induction machines, BDFM can also work as a generator or motor. The important criteria of this...

Design of Steam Turbine Control Valves Seat on Site Machinning Robot

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Torabi Goodarzi, Ashkan (Author) ; Durali, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Designing a part of an on site repair system for refurbishing steam turbine high pressure control valve has been done in this project. The main role of this control valve is to control the input flow to the turbine in different working condition . However, due to high temperature and pressure, the seat is exposed to erosion. R epairing this part in workshop requires great amount of time and cost, because the valve is a part of the turbine body and must be cut and rewelded to the turbine body. S o using an on-site repair method is highly needed. In addition, due to the limited visibility and access to the valve seat, and accurate...

    Abstract
In this study, the steady-state operation of the brushless doubly-fed machine (BDFM) in various modes is physically elaborated and the active power flow and torque analysis are presented for each operating mode alongside confirmatory experimental results on a 4/8 pole D160 size machine. The machine behaviour in asynchronous operating modes is described similar to the conventional induction machines with corresponding pole numbers. Moreover, its performance in synchronous mode is shown to be similar to synchronous machines. On the basis of the above, the BDFM performance is further analysed under two possible fault conditions: first, a controller or converter fault leading to loss of...

Single-machine batch scheduling minimizing weighted flow times and delivery costs with job release times

    , Article International Journal of Industrial Engineering Computations ; Volume 3, Issue 3 , 2012 , Pages 347-364 ; 19232926 (ISSN) Mazdeh, M. M ; Esfahani, A. N ; Sakkaki, S. E ; Pilerood, A. E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper addresses scheduling a set of weighted jobs on a single machine in presence of release date for delivery in batches to customers or to other machines for further processing. The problem is a natural extension of minimizing the sum of weighted flow times by considering the possibility of delivering jobs in batches and introducing batch delivery costs. The classical problem is NP-hard and then the extended version of the problem is NP-hard. The objective function is that of minimizing the sum of weighted flow times and delivery costs. The extended problem arises in a real supply chain network by cooperation between two layers of chain. Structural properties of the problem are...

    Abstract
Elastic joints in 2-mass drive systems, may lead to torsional oscillation which is usually rectified by reducing the bandwidth of control system. In order to improve the control performance, feedback signals from all the states are required. All the states of a drive system with a flexible coupling cannot be easily measured so it is usually necessary to estimate some of the system states using appropriate observers. In this paper, the measurement noise and disturbances of the system are well rejected using a proposed modified Luenburger observer. Compared to the classic observers, a significant improvement in the quality of the state estimation of a two mass system is obtained at a wide...
