Investigation of the microscopic displacement mechanisms and macroscopic behavior of alkaline flooding at different wettability conditions in shaly glass micromodels
, Article Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering ; Vol. 122, issue , August , 2014 , pp. 595-615 ; ISSN: 09204105 ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
Among various chemical methods, alkaline flooding has a great potential for enhancing heavy oil recovery, especially for reservoirs which contain acidic crude oil. However, fundamental understanding about microscopic displacement mechanisms and macroscopic behavior during alkaline floods at different wettabilities is not well understood, especially in five-spot shaly models. In this work several alkaline floods are performed on a glass micromodel containing randomly distributed shale streaks at different wettability conditions. Various mechanisms responsible for enhancing heavy oil recovery during alkaline flooding are investigated at different wettability conditions. These mechanisms...
On variations of the interphase thickness and the slope of strengthening by clay addition in exfoliated polymer-clay nanocomposites

Abstract
Polymer-clay nanocomposites (PCNs) have received intensive attention in recent years because of their wide domain of applications. The present report provides an approach to calculate the thickness of nanometric interphase region in exfoliated PCNs based on the information about their macroscopic modulus and their nanoclay content. First, the concept of interphase region in PCNs is explained with an “algae explanation”. Then, a series of parametric finite element simulations together with analytical equations are employed to derive an explicit relationship between the interphase thickness and the PCN macroscopic modulus. The obtained analytical model considers the structural impact of the...
Dispersivity, collapsibility and microstructure of a natural dispersive loess from Iran

Abstract
A new type of collapsible soil was encountered in Southern Iran and caused some serious technical problems including subsidence, collapse and sinkholes during the construction of Zahedan-Chabahar railway. Field observations indicated that in-situ soil contains excessive amount of salts resulting in dispersive features in response to seepage forces in addition to its collapsibility. Therefore, a systematic research plan including field sampling and laboratory testing was carried out to investigate the observed geotechnical features. Results of physio-chemical tests revealed the dominance of Sodium in excess of 70% relative to total dissolved salts, which results in high dispersive potential....
An investigation on the body force modeling in a lattice Boltzmann BGK simulation of generalized Newtonian fluids
, Article Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications ; Vol. 415, issue , 2014 , pp. 315-332 ; Manzari, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
Body force modeling is studied in the Generalized Newtonian (GN) fluid flow simulation using a single relaxation time lattice Boltzmann (LB) method. First, in a shear thickening Poiseuille flow, the necessity for studying body force modeling in the LB method is explained. Then, a parametric unified framework is constructed for the first time which is composed of a parametric LB model and its associated macroscopic dual equations in both steady state and transient simulations. This unified framework is used to compare the macroscopic behavior of different forcing models. Besides, using this unified framework, a new forcing model for steady state simulations is devised. Finally, by solving a...
The effect of brine salinity and oil components on dynamic IFT behavior of oil-brine during low salinity water flooding: Diffusion coefficient, EDL establishment time, and IFT reduction rate

Abstract
Dynamic behavior of fluid-fluid interactions can potentially affect the performance of any enhanced oil recovery (EOR) process including low salinity water flooding. In this work, dynamic interfacial tension (IFT) of crude-oil/brine system is measured in a wide range of salinity of sea water (SW), from 50-time diluted sea water (SW50D) to 2-time concentrated sea water (SW2C). Contrary to the most of published IFT trends in the literature, for the system under investigation here, as the brine salinity increases the crude-oil/brine IFT reduces, which cannot be explained using the existing theories. The lack of a physical model to explain the observed phenomena was the motivation to develop a...
