Study of Unidirectional Surface Waves Propagation in Magnetic Layers and their Behavior Near Different Barriers

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Emad Marvasti, Mohammad Fater (Author) ; Rejaei Salmasi, Behzad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Lorentz reciprocity theorem is one of the most fundamental concepts in electromagnetism. Although, in specific conditions, for example in nonlinear systems or systems with broken time-reversal symmetry it can be violated. In recent years, many interests have been attracted towards such systems. With a proper design, they can support nonreciprocal or at specific conditions unidirectional propagation behavior. For example, despite ordinary dielectrics, in ferrite layers, the propagation constant of surface waves on ferrite edge, depends on the direction of propagation with respect to magnetization direction. Furthermore, in the specific interval of frequencies, ferrite structures allow...

    Abstract
Modular linear doubly salient permanent magnet motors are well adapted to linear propulsion systems because of their distinct characteristics, such as high efficiency and power density, reduced maintenance and initial cost, low noise and permanent magnet (PM) leakage flux, and fault tolerance capability. However, such motors suffer from high cogging thrust. In this study, various techniques based on previously proposed methods for PM machines are applied on the studied motor and evaluated by using non-linear three-dimensional time-stepping finite element analysis; three novel, optimised techniques are then presented. The techniques presented are based on the minimisation of the variation in...

    Abstract
The lack of turn-off ability makes the spark gap-based Marx generator uncontrollable in terminating the output pulse. In addition, there are some limitations for rise time and voltage gain improvements in the conventional critically-damped Marx design. In this paper, an efficient over-damped design of Marx circuit is proposed, which leads to a shorter rise time as well as a larger voltage gain. A chopping magnetic switch is employed to achieve the desired values of the fall time and full width at half maximum (FWHM). Moreover, adding a DC bias circuit to the magnetic switch provides the ability to adjust the pulse FWHM parameter. Therefore, an output pulse with a shorter rise time, larger...

Optimal design of adjustable air-gap, two-speed, capacitor-run, single-phase axial flux induction motors

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion ; Volume 28, Issue 3 , May , 2013 , Pages 543-552 ; 08858969 (ISSN) Nasiri Gheidari, Z ; Lesani, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
-In this paper, a new optimized structure for two-speed, capacitor-run, single-phase axial flux induction motor (AFIM) for direct-drive operation is presented. Although, there are many advantages for direct-drive systems, their axial forces between the stator and rotor increases with reduction in air-gap length and is of serious concern. An increase in the air-gap length will result in the deterioration of performance characteristics of the motor. In this paper, a new construction technique is proposed to fabricate an AFIM with adjustable air-gap length. After presenting a comprehensive design algorithm, all geometrical dimensions and electrical equivalent circuit parameters are analytically...

Self-biased low loss conductor featured with skin effect suppression for high quality RF passives

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Magnetics ; Volume 48, Issue 11 , 2012 , Pages 4139-4142 ; 00189464 (ISSN) Iramnaaz, I ; Schellevis, H ; Rejaei, B ; Fitch, R ; Zhuang, Y ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We present experimental data for artificial metaconductors exhibiting skin effect suppression at microwave frequencies. The metaconductor consists of a stack comprising twelve periods of alternating ferromagnetic (Permalloy) and normal metal (Cu) layers. Near the effective antiferromagnetic resonant frequency the average in-plane magnetic permeability of the stack approaches zero, leading to an increase in the skin depth. Compared to a Cu-based device, up to 70% loss reduction has been achieved by a metaconductor based coplanar wave guide at ∼ 10 GHz without changing the propagation wavelength. Moreover, unlike conventional magnetic devices, no external magnetic bias is required due to the...

Effect of electron correlation in Sr(Ca)Ru1-xCrxO3: Density functional calculation

    , Article Journal of Solid State Chemistry ; Volume 183, Issue 7 , 2010 , Pages 1678-1690 ; 00224596 (ISSN) Hadipour, H ; Akhavan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
We have investigated the electronic structure of Sr(Ca)Ru1-xCrxO3 using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave method by different approximation such as LSDA and LSDA+U. The LSDA calculation suggest that Cr4+-Ru4+ hybridization is responsible for the high Curie temperature TC in SrRu1-xCrxO3, but it cannot completely describe its physical behavior. Our LSDA+U DOS results for SrRu1-xCrxO3 clearly establishes renormalization of the intra-atomic exchange strength at the Ru sites, arising from the Cr-Ru hybridization. The antiferromagnetic coupling of Cr3+ with Ru4+,5+ lattice increases the screening, which is consistent with the low magnetic moment of the Ru ions. The more distorted...

    Abstract
In this paper, design and prototyping of two-speed capacitor-run single-phase axial-flux induction motor (AFIM) for direct-drive applications is presented. The proposed structure has single stator-single rotor configuration with high magnetic pull between the stator and rotor, which may compel rotor to lock. Although the most efficient method to overcome this problem is using a second rotor or stator in the mirror with the first one, it is not applicable in low-cost applications. So, in this paper, two new and fast construction techniques are proposed to fabricate an AFIM with extra low air-gap length and minimum cost. Beside design and optimization process, a thermal equivalent circuit...

    Abstract
In the presented paper, an analytical model is developed for calculation of the air gap magnetic flux density in the axial-flux surface-mounted PM machines. The slotting effect is taken into account in the air gap magnetic flux distribution, accurately. The main novelty of this study is replacing the stator teeth by some surface currents at the border of the removed stator teeth. The uniqueness theorem is applied to find the surface currents. The two-dimensional (2D) field solution in the slotless machine is solved easily by separation of variables method. The multi-slice quasi-3D method is applied for taking 3D nature of field distribution into account. In addition, the back-EMF, armature...

    , Article 2009 13th European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications, EPE '09, 8 September 2009 through 10 September 2009, Barcelona ; 2009 ; 9781424444328 (ISBN) Siahbalaee, J ; Vaez Zadeh, S ; Tahami, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The main purpose of this paper is to minimize the loss while reducing the flux and torque ripples in permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) under direct torque control (DTC). Offline method is used to minimize the loss and obtain the optimal flux. To reduce the amount of computation, the optimal flux table is produced according to the conditions in which the machine works. To reduce the flux and torque ripples and to control the switching frequency, SVM-DTC method is applied. Simulation results depict a noticeable increase in efficiency of the motor and a reduction in flux and torque ripples

    Abstract
Multi-phase induction motors feature a high fault-tolerance capability that makes them suitable for safety critical applications. On the other hand, concentrated winding is more fault-tolerant than conventional distributed winding. Therefore, the general idea is to use concentrated winding on the six-phase induction motor to gain more fault-tolerance capacity. Using concentrated winding has several advantages over distributed one, but it has the disadvantage of higher distortion of air gap flux density, which affects the motor performance significantly. In this paper, some concentrated windings are studied analytically by using the winding function analysis, and the layout with better...

    Abstract
This article presents a model to simulate the behavior of a magnetic shape memory alloy while harvesting vibratory energy. In this type of energy harvester, magnetic shape memory alloy element is placed in the air gap of a ferromagnetic core which conducts the magnetic flux. Two apparent coils are wound around a ferromagnetic core: one to produce bias magnetic field by passing a rectified electric current and the other to serve as an energy pickup coil. Applying compressive time-variant strain field to magnetic shape memory alloy element changes its dimensions and magnetic properties as well. Presence of the bias magnetic field returns magnetic shape memory alloy element to its initial state...

    Abstract
Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives have many advantages over other drives, e.g. high efficiency and high power density. Particularly, permanent magnet synchronous motors are epoch-making and are intensively studied among researchers, scientists and engineers. This paper deals with a novel high performance controller based on genetic algorithm. The scheme allows the motor to be driven with maximum torque per ampere characteristic. In this paper assuming an appropriate fitness function, the optimum values for d-axis current of motor set points at each time are found and then applied to the controller. Simulation results show the successful operation of the proposed controller. ©...

A sensor fault tolerant drive for interior permanent-magnet synchronous motors

    , Article 2008 IEEE 2nd International Power and Energy Conference, PECon 2008, Johor Baharu, 1 December 2008 through 3 December 2008 ; January , 2008 , Pages 283-288 ; 9781424424054 (ISBN) Tahami, F ; Nademi, H ; Rezaei, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The study reported in this paper deals with the problem of developing a controller with tolerance to current sensor faults. To achieve this goal, two control strategies are considered. In the first method, field oriented control and a developed observer are used in case of no fault. The second approach is concerned with fault tolerant strategy based on an observer for faulty conditions. Current sensors failures are detected and the current will be estimated successfully in order to allow continuous operation of the vector control. Based on the motor model, currents can be estimated using a nonlinear observer. A decoupling current vector control strategy is developed to ensure high...

    Abstract
In this paper, a new scheme for position control of a mechanical load driven by a permanent magnet DC motor and a gearbox is presented. The gearbox is assumed to have some amount of backlash. The paper derives a model for the backlash nonlinear behavior. It then proposes a new control structure composed of feedback and feed forward control systems. The feedback control system is designed based on zero backlash. The feed forward part is employed to minimize the backlash effects. The new method is evaluated via simulations in MATLAB/SEVIULINK environment. Simulations results are provided to show the response of the proposed technique to various input references. © 2006 IEEE

Developing a neural network model for magnetic yoke structure

, Article 2008 IEEE International Conference on Computational Intelligence for Measurement Systems and Applications, IEEE CIMSA 2008, Istanbul, 14 July 2008 through 16 July 2008 ; 2008 , Pages 75-78 ; 9781424423064 (ISBN) Ravanbod, H ; Norouzi, E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Magnetic flux leakage technique is used extensively to detect and characterize defects in natural gas and oil transmission pipelines. The amount of magnetic flux introduced into the test sample is an important factor in the resolution of flaw detection. It depends on the power of permanent magnets and the geometrical design of the magnetic yoke. Finite element method (FEM) is the most widely used method of analyzing magnetic yoke due to its power, accuracy and straightforwardness. On the other hand its calculations are so complicated and time consuming, and every single modification in the parameters of the problem requires a new run. In this paper, we present an innovative method to...

Design Optimization of a Ladder Secondary Single-Sided Linear Induction Motor for Improved Performance

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion ; Volume 30, Issue 4 , 2015 , Pages 1595-1603 ; 08858969 (ISSN) Ravanji, M. H ; Nasiri Gheidari, Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, design and optimization of a ladder-type single-sided linear induction motor (Ladder SLIM) for machine tool applications is investigated. High-speed linear induction machines suffer from the end-effect phenomenon, which can reduce the thrust and result in declined output characteristics. Although it is common to consider this phenomenon in high-speed applications, it is essential to take it into account in the design and analysis of low-speed low-air-gap linear machines. In addition, Ladder SLIMs have significant flux density ripples, and using skewed bars for secondary of the machine is a common solution for it. Therefore, providing required equations, an algorithm for...
