    Abstract
Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) isolation from a blood sample plays an important role in cancer diagnosis and treatment. Microfluidics offers a great potential for cancer cell separation from the blood. Among the microfluidic-based methods for CTC separation, the inertial method as a passive method and magnetic method as an active method are two efficient well-established methods. Here, we investigated the combination of these two methods to separate CTCs from a blood sample in a single chip. Firstly, numerical simulations were performed to analyze the fluid flow within the proposed channel, and the particle trajectories within the inertial cell separation unit were investigated to...

    Abstract
Identifying tumor cells from a pool of other cells has always been an appealing topic for different purposes. The objective of this study is to discriminate circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from blood cells for diagnostic purposes in a novel microfluidic device using two active methods: magnetophoresis and dielectrophoresis. The most specific feature of this device is the differentiation of CTCs without labeling them in order to achieve a more reliable and less complicated method. This device was analyzed and evaluated using finite element method. Four cell lines are separated in this device containing red blood cells, platelets, white blood cells, and CTCs. Primarily, red blood cells and...

Effects of physicochemical characteristics of magnetically recoverable biocatalysts upon fatty acid methyl esters synthesis from oils

    Abstract
This study reports the importance of physicochemical characteristics of the core-shell structured polymer-coated Fe3O4 cluster@SiO2 nanocomposite particles for designing the biocatalysts used for transesterification of soybean oil. To demonstrate this issue, two different types of polymer molecules such as polyethylenimine (PEI) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) each with two different molecular weights are employed. The highest fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) synthesis yield values are achieved by the lipases immobilized onto the low- and high-molecular-weight PEI-coated particles as compared to those of the low- and high-molecular-weight PAA-coated particles (i.e., ∼64.8% and ∼73.1% versus...

    Abstract
In the last decades, numerous attempts have been made to prevent microbial pollution spreading, using antibacterial agents. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) belongs to a subgroup of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) merits of attention due to the zinc ion clusters and its effective antibacterial activity. In this work, Ag-doped magnetic microporous γ-Fe2O3@SiO2@ZIF-8-Ag (FSZ-Ag) was successfully synthesized by a facile methodology in room temperature and used as an antibacterial agent against the growth of the Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Several characterization methods were applied to analyze the properties of the materials, and the...
