Reliability-based maintenance scheduling of generating units in restructured power systems

    , Article Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences ; Vol. 22, issue. 5 , 2014 , p. 1147-1158 ; ISSN: 13000632 Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Aminifar, F ; Shahzadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Maintenance scheduling of generating units in restructured power systems is a collaborative and interactive process between independent system operators (ISOs) and generating companies (GENCOs). The ISO should comply with GENCO maintenance preferences subject to targeted system reliability levels. This process might be multistage since the admission of all initial unit outage requests may threaten system reliability. Hence, the ISO accepts some proposals and determines alternatives for the remaining units. The GENCOs are then allowed to confirm the alternatives or revise them. In this paper the ISO problem of generating unit maintenance scheduling is tackled. The objective function is to...

    Abstract
An important issue in power system planning is maintenance scheduling of generating units. In a traditional power system, the problem of maintenance scheduling is of high importance and has various technical and economical constraints. Different methods have been used to solve the problem. On the other hand, changes in legal environment of electricity industry poses new bound and requirements on the maintenance scheduling problem. This paper presents a new approach on maintenance scheduling of generating units in a generating company (GENCO). The proposed approach uses Markov Decision Process (MDP) to minimize total costs of unserved energy and reserve. The impacts on maintenance scheduling...

Maintenance Planning at Generation by GENCO & ISO in Restructured Power System

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farmahini Farahani, Ehsan (Author) ; Ehsan , Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In a centralized power system, the system operator, derives a maintenance scheduling plan that maximizing reliability of system and minimizing operating cost. But in a restructured power system the goals of GENCOs and independent system operator (ISO) are separate and each of them optimize its own goal. The goal of each GENCO is to maximize its annual benefits and the goal of ISO is to maximize the reliability of system throughout the year. Therefore there are two objective functions for finding an optimum maintenance schedule in restructured power system. This thesis proposes a new method for maintenance scheduling of generation units in a restructured power system. Firstly each GENCO...

A Comprehensive Model for Aircraft Maintenance Routing

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Asadi, Hossein (Author) ; Shafahi, Yousef (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the fundamental constraints that should have been in mind in flight scheduling is aircraft maintenance scheduling. Based on the accepted rules, regulations and flight safety, in a given period of time or after definite number of flight hours each aircraft should be sent to maintenance site. This influences the flight schedule. This research provides a comprehensive model for the flight scheduling. Given the flight schedule, number of the flights and aircrafts, maintenance center's capacity and other parameters such as each check's time, allowable flight days and allowable flight hours this model could determine each season's flight schedule and solve the aircraft routing problem....

    Abstract
Recognition of the circuit-breaker's (CB) vital role in reliable operation and protection of power systems (i.e., during energization, disconnecting loads, and clearing faults), helps to understand the requirement and importance of its maintenance management as well as maintenance scheduling. Condition-based maintenance (CBM), employing online monitoring (OLM) of CBs, has been long reported as the most practical maintenance policy on the power system CBs. There are a large number of CBs in a power system to be monitored; however, to address the financial limitations for OLM implementation (in utilities), a method will be proposed to find the most critical breakers for enforcing effectively...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Systems ; Vol. 27, issue. 3 , 2012 , p. 1354-1365 ; ISSN: 08858950 Abiri-Jahromi, A ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Parvania, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper addresses the midterm preventive maintenance outage scheduling problem of thermal generating units which is becoming increasingly important due to the aging of power generation fleet. In this context, a novel midterm preventive maintenance outage scheduler is proposed based on decision tree and mixed integer linear formation which explicitly considers the thermal units aging momentum in terms of failure rate. This allows the system operators to determine the thermal units' maintenance outage window based on the cost/benefit analysis of preventive maintenance tasks while optimizing the time interval between consecutive maintenance tasks. Additionally, the division of the year-long...

    Abstract
Security constrained Preventive Maintenance (PM) scheduling is addressed as a crucial issue especially coping with new challenges of smart grids. Under the smart grid environment, Demand Response Resources (DRRs) are considered as virtual power plants in energy policy decisions which affect the controllability of power system ranging from short-term to long-term. Here, DRRs are regarded as a virtual resource of capacity reserve acquisition. Furthermore, under new environment, multifarious objectives will be imposed to PM scheduling which can be replicated into a single objective problem via a weighted approach with consideration of arbitrary weighting coefficients. In this paper, a new...

    Abstract
Confronted with the power system restructuring trend reforming the past-regulated power systems, the need for a narrower insight on the costly maintenance strategies seems imperative. It falls within the realm of reliability centered maintenance to enhance the cost effectiveness of power distribution maintenance policies. From a practical point of view, this paper devises a novel approach on the basis of the analytical hierarchical process (AHP) accompanied by fuzzy sets theory to determine the most critical component types of distribution power systems to be prioritized in maintenance scheduling. In the presence of many qualitative and quantitative attributes, fuzzy sets can effectively...
