    Abstract
Increasing the lifetime and improving the performance of structures through redesign and optimization are important, especially in marine structures. In general, there are two main groups of marine structures: onshore and offshore structures. Most marine structures are offshore, and these are divided into two categories: floating or sunken. One of the important parameters in the design of sunken structures is the critical load resulting from the buckling of walls, which can cause damage to the structure. In the present paper, three rectangular aluminum and steel compartments of different conditions and sizes were modeled using design analysis methods. Then, different finite element analyses...

A comprehensive review on design, monitoring, and failure in fixed offshore platforms

    Abstract
Offshore platforms have had diverse applications in the marine industry, for example, oil or gas platforms can provide facilities to store the oil and gas before transport those to refineries. Offshore wind turbines are another well-known use of the offshore platform for generating power. As platforms encounter various strong forces from water and wind currents, the materials used for these structures are mainly steel or concrete. These platforms are classified into different types, according to the depth of water and their applications. In addition, offshore platforms, as artificial reefs may be used for decades at different marine conditions. Consequently, their design and maintenance are...

Prediction of current-induced local scour around complex piers: Review, revisit, and integration

    , Article Coastal Engineering ; Volume 133 , 2018 , Pages 43-58 ; 03783839 (ISSN) Amini Baghbadorani, D ; Ataie Ashtiani, B ; Beheshti, A ; Hadjzaman, M ; Jamali, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Complex piers (CPs), consisting of a column, pile cap and pile group, are commonly built as foundations for hydraulic and marine structures. Scour-hole development around CPs is studied in this paper. A total of 52 tests is carried out on 4 CP models, with experiments durations ranging from 24 to 120 h. All of the available experimental data for clear-water scour around CPs including the collected data of the present study and those previously published are reviewed and combined into a database. A special case of bridge piers with deep foundation or caisson instead of pile caps is also considered, which is herein called compound piers. The database contains 367 experiments for CPs and 162...

Stability control of a novel frame integrated with an SMA-MRF control system for marine structural applications based on the frequency analysis

    Abstract
Structural integrity and ensuring the stability of steel frame structures, including marine and coastal structures, are the main challenges for designers in civil infrastructures, particularly in oil platforms, subjected to tough periodic and non-periodic environmental loading conditions. Variable loadings with different amplitudes and frequencies may lead to the stability of steel structures loss. In order to keep the stability of the steel structures and prevent possible damages, reliable yet efficient structural control systems are in demand. Conventional structural control systems need significant activation energy and/or in-depth users knowledge to be effective. Most recently, smart...

Effect of shape memory alloy-magnetorheological fluid-based structural control system on the marine structure using nonlinear time-history analysis

    Abstract
Marine structures, as key elements in the global energy network, constantly are subjected to harsh environmental loading conditions. Therefore, reliable yet efficient structural control mechanisms are required to ensure their safe functionality and structural stability. In the present work, a novel hybrid structural control element for marine structures has been designed in which the superelasticity effect of shape memory alloy (SMA) and damping controllability of magnetorheological fluid (MRF), as smart materials, have been combined. The novel system does not require huge external energy for activation and in addition, the system has the ability to be tuned for variable loading conditions....
