Solid-Liquid Mass Transfer in the Annular Region of a Taylor-Couette Contacting Device

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Faraji Dizaji, Naeimeh (Author) ; Molaei Dehkordi, Asghar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Vortex flow reactor (VFR) is used for biochemical reactions and separation applications. By using the second flow regime, called Taylor-Couette flow, VFR provides high amounts of mass transfer and mixing for biological components sensitive to shear stress. Mass transfer in a bench-scale Taylor-Couette contactor with a radius ratio, equal to 0.77 and an aspect ratio, equal to 30.7 was studied for solid particles dissolution. The working fluid was water and the suspended particles were benzoic acid. In this project the concentration of fluid phase was measured by injection of definite amount of the solid particles in to the contactor and sampling in different time intervals and the effects of...

Tube bundle heat and mass transfer characteristics in falling film absorption generators

    , Article International Communications in Heat and Mass Transfer ; Volume 30, Issue 4 , 2003 , Pages 565-576 ; 07351933 (ISSN) Jani, S ; Saidi, M. H ; Mozaffari, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2003
    Abstract
Falling film heat and mass transfer analysis of a horizontal tube bundle in a generator of absorption chillers have been studied. The film Reynolds number is limited to the laminar flow and the effect of ripple on the free surface has been ignored. Thermal boundary conditions are considered to be constant wall temperature and desorption is considered to be free surface evaporation. Analysis is based on a single column of horizontal tubes, arranged in a vertically spaced configuration. A comprehensive numerical code has been developed to solved the governing equations. The functional relationship of average heat transfer coefficient of tube bundle has been analytically correlated to the first...

Mass measurement using an intensity-modulated optical fiber sensor

    , Article Optics and Lasers in Engineering ; Volume 38, Issue 6 , 2002 , Pages 537-548 ; 01438166 (ISSN) Golnabi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2002
    Abstract
Design and operation of an opto-mechanical sensor for mass measurements is reported. This device uses a pair of optical fibers and a reflecting coated lens. The light intensity modulation is based on the relative motion of the lens due to a given mass with respect to the optical fibers. The modulated intensity because of the weighing mass has been measured by using a digital voltmeter. A full-range sensitivity of about 11.5 mV/g for a dynamic range of 80 g is obtained. A mass resolution of better than 0.25 g has been measured with this device. The measured output response is checked against the expected theoretical one and a general agreement observed. A comparison with similar experimental...

    Abstract
This article extends a procedure that has been used to discretize a continuous flexible beam into a system of rigid bars and joints, which resist relative rotation of the attached bars. The object of this article is to present and formulate a simple and practical approximate technique for determining the time response of beams with internal hinges and different boundary conditions, carrying a moving mass. The results are compared with a general-purpose nonlinear dynamic finite element program, and a good agreement is achieved. © 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved

    Abstract
In this paper the analytical and simulation modelling of the combined heat and mass transfer processes that occur in a solid desiccant wheel is carried out. Using the numerical method, the performance of an adiabatic rotary dehumidifier is parametrically studied, and the optimal rotational speed is determined by examining the outlet adsorption-side humidity profiles. An approach to compare the solutions for different conditions used in air dehumidifier has been investigated according to the previous published studies. Comparing the simulated results with the published actual values of an experimental work substantiates the validity of model. The model accuracy with respect to the key...

    , Article Fresenius' Journal of Analytical Chemistry ; Volume 369, Issue 2 , 2001 , Pages 176-183 ; 09370633 (ISSN) Ghassempour, A ; Arshadi, M. R ; Asghari, F. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2001
    Abstract
N-1-naphthylphtalamic acid (naptalam) and its degradation products, 1-naphthylamine and N-(1-naphthyl) phthalimide were simultaneously determined in river water by two independent mass spectrometric (MS) methods. These were negative ion MS (NIMS) and programmable temperature vaporizer gas chromatography mass spectrometry (PTV-GC MS) with electron impact ionization (positive ions). Prior to the NIMS analysis, the samples were preconcentrated by solid phase extraction (SPE) of C18 membrane discs. The PTV-GC MS studies were performed without any preconcentration procedure. Selected ion monitoring (SIM) and internal standardization with naphthalene were applied in both methods. The limits of...

The effect of nanoparticles on the mass transfer in Liquid–Liquid extraction

    , Article Chemical Engineering Communications ; Volume 202, Issue 5 , Sep , 2015 , Pages 600-605 ; 00986445 (ISSN) Mirzazadeh Ghanadi, A ; Heydari Nasab, A ; Bastani, D ; Seife Kordi, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This article investigates the effect of nanoparticles on mass transfer in the liquid–liquid extraction for the chemical system of n-butanol–succinic acid–water. For this purpose, nanofluids containing various concentrations of ZnO, carbon nanotubes (CNT), and TiO2 nanoparticles in water, as base fluid, were prepared. To examine the flow mode effect on mass transfer rate, different fluid modes including dropping and jetting were employed in the process. Results show that mass transfer rate enhancement depends on the kinds and the concentration of nanoparticles and the modes of flow. It was observed that after adding nanoparticles, the mass transfer rate significantly increases up to two-fold...

    Abstract
The suppression of the individual Υ(nS) states in PbPb collisions with respect to their yields in pp data has been measured. The PbPb and pp data sets used in the analysis correspond to integrated luminosities of 150μb -1 and 230nb-1, respectively, collected in 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC, at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 2.76TeV. The Υ(nS) yields are measured from the dimuon invariant mass spectra. The suppression of the Υ(nS) yields in PbPb relative to the yields in pp, scaled by the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions, RAA, is measured as a function of the collision centrality. Integrated over centrality, the RAA values are 0.56±0.08(stat)±0.07(syst),...

A new method to calculate efficiency of randomly-packed distillation columns and its comparison with the methods utilized in ASPEN Plus

    , Article Fuel Processing Technology ; Volume 96 , 2012 , Pages 65-73 ; 03783820 (ISSN) Sadeghifar, H ; Sadeghifar, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
In this paper, a unique and applicable method was developed for calculation of efficiency (and mass and heat transfer coefficients) of randomly-packed distillation columns. This method has potential advantages; e.g., unlike all the available methods, it can calculate efficiency without using any empirical mass transfer and hydraulic correlations, and without the need to estimate the operational and hydraulic parameters of an operating column. It, therefore, will be free of errors and limitations of such empirical items and can be used for efficiency calculation of any random packing including new ones. Along with an analysis of the proposed method, the paper also presents a thorough analysis...

An applicable method for efficiency estimation of operating tray distillation columns and its comparison with the methods utilized in HYSYS and Aspen Plus

    , Article Heat and Mass Transfer/Waerme- und Stoffuebertragung ; Volume 51, Issue 10 , October , 2015 , Pages 1393-1402 ; 09477411 (ISSN) Sadeghifar, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Developing general methods that rely on column data for the efficiency estimation of operating (existing) distillation columns has been overlooked in the literature. Most of the available methods are based on empirical mass transfer and hydraulic relations correlated to laboratory data. Therefore, these methods may not be sufficiently accurate when applied to industrial columns. In this paper, an applicable and accurate method was developed for the efficiency estimation of distillation columns filled with trays. This method can calculate efficiency as well as mass and heat transfer coefficients without using any empirical mass transfer or hydraulic correlations and without the need to...

Effects of boundary-layer bleed parameters on supersonic intake performance

    , Article Journal of Propulsion and Power ; Volume 31, Issue 3 , March , 2015 , Pages 826-836 ; 07484658 (ISSN) Soltani, M. R ; Younsi, J. S ; Farahani, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The performance and the buzz onset of a supersonic mixed-compression axisymmetric intake are experimentally investigated. Effectsof the slot bleed position, angle, and width onthe intake performance and onthe buzz initiation at three different Mach numbers of 1.8, 2.0, and 2.2 and at a zero degree angle of attack are studied. The intake performance is assessed using the total pressure recovery, mass flow ratio, flow distortion, and bleed mass flow ratio. The results show that applying the bleed at a position near the intake entrance and reducing the bleed entrance slant angle and width all improve the intake performance considerably. Moreover, these parameters postpone the buzz onset. In...

Invariance in growth and mass transport

    , Article Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids ; Volume 24, Issue 6 , 2019 , Pages 1707-1713 ; 10812865 (ISSN) Javadi, M ; Epstein, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    SAGE Publications Inc  2019
    Abstract
The equations of balance of a continuum under conditions of growth and mass diffusion are derived from a principle of invariance under general observer transformations. The resulting equations are invariant under inertial transformations. Apparent body forces stemming from the mass transport phenomenon are identified and shown to be associated with non-inertial observers

Micromorphic balance equations in mass transport and mass production

    , Article International Journal of Engineering Science ; Volume 153 , 2020 Javadi, M ; Epstein, M ; Asghari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
The balance equations for micromorphic materials with mass flux and mass production are determined based on the phenomenon of self-diffusion. In this study, the self-diffusive flux is the flux of mass of a single micromorphic species within itself which is captured by defining the relative macro-element spatial velocity vector and the relative micro-gyration tensor. By use of a binary micromorphic mixture theory, the self-diffusion of a single micromorphic species within itself results in an extra diffusive momentum field, an extra diffusive moment of momentum and their respective non-compliant terms. The concepts of the macro- and micro-mass flux are studied in the framework of the...

    Abstract
The Ξb-π+π- invariant mass spectrum is investigated with an event sample of proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016-2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb-1. The ground state Ξb- is reconstructed via its decays to J/ψΞ- and J/ψΛK-. A narrow resonance, labeled Ξb(6100)-, is observed at a Ξb-π+π- invariant mass of 6100.3±0.2(stat)±0.1(syst)±0.6(Ξb-) MeV, where the last uncertainty reflects the precision of the Ξb- baryon mass. The upper limit on the Ξb(6100)- natural width is determined to be 1.9 MeV at 95% confidence level. The low Ξb(6100)- signal yield observed in data does not allow a measurement of the quantum numbers...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nakhaeipour, Fahimeh (Author) ; Bastani, Dariush (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The main objective of this project is to study the effect of the presence of nanoparticles on mass transfer in liquid-liquid systems. To do this research, TiO2/water, Al2O3/water, CNTs/water and CNTs/toluene have been used as nanofluids. The experiments of TiO2/water nanofluid were been carried out in water-acetone-toluene system at two weigh percents of TiO2 nanoparticles. The result showed that mass transfer decreased in 0.5wt% of TiO2, compared to base fluid, and it increase in 1 %wt. Also in 0.5%wt the decrease in interfacial tension decreased diameter of drops and as a result mass transfer decreased too. In 1%wt the increase in viscosity increased the diameter of drops and then the...

Synthesis and thermogravimetric analysis of inclusion complexes of O2N2-donor Aza-crown macrocyclic ligands with [60]fullerene

    , Article Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry ; Volume 118, Issue 3 , 2014 , pp 1631-1637 ; ISSN: 13886150 Ghanbari, B ; Gholamnezhad, P ; Hatami, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A simple method for the formation of inclusion complex of [60]fullerene with two O2N2-donor aza-crown macrocyclic ligands was introduced. The products were characterized using UV-vis and IR spectroscopies as well as HPLC, and ESI mass spectrometry. The ESI mass and elemental analysis data revealed that the ratio of macroring:[60]fullerene were not the same. The binding capability of the macrorings as well as the number of the macroring addends to [60]fullerene were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Considering percentage mass loss in different steps of TG and the enthalpy changes in DSC found for each of these products, the number...

Relativistic rotation curve for cosmological structures

    , Article International Journal of Modern Physics D ; Vol. 23, Issue. 9 , 2014 ; ISSN: 02182718 Razbin, M ; Firouzjaee, J. T ; Mansouri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Using a general relativistic exact model for spherical structures in a cosmological background, we have put forward an algorithm to calculate the test particle geodesics within such cosmological structures in order to obtain the velocity profile of stars or galaxies. The rotation curve thus obtained is based on a density profile and is independent of any mass definition which is not unique in general relativity. It is then shown that this general relativistic rotation curves for a toy model and a NFW density profile are almost identical to the corresponding Newtonian one, although the general relativistic masses may be quite different

An efficient fractal method for detection and diagnosis of breast masses in mammograms

    , Article Journal of Digital Imaging ; Vol. 27, issue. 5 , 2014 , pp. 661-669 ; ISSN: 08971889 Beheshti, S. M. A ; AhmadiNoubari, H ; Fatemizadeh, E ; Khalili, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we present an efficient fractal method for detection and diagnosis of mass lesion in mammogram which is one of the abnormalities in mammographic images. We used 110 images that were carefully selected by a radiologist, and their abnormalities were also confirmed by biopsy. These images included circumscribed benign, ill-defined, and spiculated malignant masses. Firstly, we discriminated lesions automatically using new fractal dimensions. The results which were examined by different types of breast density showed that the proposed method was able to yield quite satisfactory detection results. Secondly, noting that contours of masses playing the most important role in diagnosis...

    Abstract
We report an investigation of the invariant mass spectrum of the two jets with highest transverse momentum in pp→W+2-jet and W+3-jet events to look for resonant enhancement. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb-1 collected with the CMS detector at √s=7 TeV. We find no evidence for the anomalous structure reported by the CDF Collaboration, and establish an upper limit of 5.0 pb at 95% confidence level on the production cross section for a generic Gaussian signal with mass near 150 GeV. Additionally, we exclude two theoretical models that predict a CDF-like dijet resonance near 150 GeV

    Abstract
A search for signatures of extra spatial dimensions in the diphoton invariant-mass spectrum has been performed with the CMS detector at the LHC. No excess of events above the standard model expectation is observed using a data sample collected in proton-proton collisions at √s=7TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.2fb -1. In the context of the large-extra-dimensions model, lower limits are set on the effective Planck scale in the range of 2.3-3.8TeV at the 95% confidence level. These limits are the most restrictive bounds on virtual-graviton exchange to date. The most restrictive lower limits to date are also set on the mass of the first graviton excitation in the...
