Workspace measurement of the surgeon's upper limb during an arthroscopy and three laparoscopy operations using inertial sensor systems

    , Article 2013 E-Health and Bioengineering Conference, EHB 2013 ; 2013 ; 9781479923731 (ISBN) Soroush, A ; Farahmand, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the workspace of surgeon's body for designing more efficient surgical robots in the operation rooms. Five wearable inertial sensors were placed near the wrist and elbow joints and also on the thorax of surgeons to track the orientation of upper limb. Assuming that the lengths of five segments of an upper limb were known, measurements of the inertial sensors were used to determine the position of the wrist and elbow joints via an established kinematic model. subsequently, to assess the workspace of surgeon upper body, raw data were collected in the arthroscopy and laparoscopy operations. Experimental results demonstrated that the workspaces of surgeon's...

Compressed sensing and multiple image fusion: An information theoretic approach

, Article Iranian Conference on Machine Vision and Image Processing, MVIP ; 2013 , Pages 339-342 ; 21666776 (ISSN) ; 9781467361842 (ISBN) Keykhosravi, K ; Mashhadi, S ; Engineers (IEEE) Antennas and Propagation Society; The Institute of Electrical and Electronics ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose an information theoretic approach to fuse images compressed by compressed sensing (CS) techniques. The goal is to fuse multiple compressed images directly using measurements and reconstruct the final image only once. Since the reconstruction is the most expensive step, it would be a more economic method than separate reconstruction of each image. The proposed scheme is based on calculating the result using weighted average on the measurements of the inputs, where weights are calculated by information theoretic functions. The simulation results show that the final images produced by our method have higher quality than those produced by traditional methods, especially...

An optimization-based method for prediction of lumbar spine segmental kinematics from the measurements of thorax and pelvic kinematics

    , Article International Journal for Numerical Methods in Biomedical Engineering ; July , 2015 , Volume 31, Issue 12 ; 20407939 (ISSN) Shojaei, I ; Arjmand, N ; Bazrgari, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Wiley-Blackwell  2015
    Abstract
Given measurement difficulties, earlier modeling studies have often used some constant ratios to predict lumbar segmental kinematics from measurements of total lumbar kinematics. Recent imaging studies suggested distribution of lumbar kinematics across its vertebrae changes with trunk rotation, lumbar posture, and presence of load. An optimization-based method is presented and validated in this study to predict segmental kinematics from measured total lumbar kinematics. Specifically, a kinematics-driven biomechanical model of the spine is used in a heuristic optimization procedure to obtain a set of segmental kinematics that, when prescribed to the model, were associated with the minimum...

Creating maximally entangled states by gluing

    , Article Quantum Information Processing ; Volume 16, Issue 3 , 2017 ; 15700755 (ISSN) Raissi, Z ; Karimipour, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer New York LLC  2017
    Abstract
We introduce a general method of gluing multi-partite states and show that entanglement swapping is a special class of a wider range of gluing operations. The gluing operation of two m and n qudit states consists of an entangling operation on two given qudits of the two states followed by operations of measurements of the two qudits in the computational basis. Depending on how many qudits (two, one or zero) we measure, we have three classes of gluing operation, resulting respectively in m+ n- 2 , m+ n- 1 , or m+ n qudit states. Entanglement swapping belongs to the first class and has been widely studied, while the other two classes are presented and studied here. In particular, we study how...

    Abstract
The muon trigger system of the CMS experiment uses a combination of hardware and software to identify events containing a muon. During Run 2 (covering 2015-2018) the LHC achieved instantaneous luminosities as high as 2 × 10 cm s while delivering proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV. The challenge for the trigger system of the CMS experiment is to reduce the registered event rate from about 40 MHz to about 1 kHz. Significant improvements important for the success of the CMS physics program have been made to the muon trigger system via improved muon reconstruction and identification algorithms since the end of Run 1 and throughout the Run 2 data-taking period. The new algorithms maintain...

    Abstract
Since the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, detailed studies of its properties have been ongoing. Besides its mass, its width—related to its lifetime—is an important parameter. One way to determine this quantity is to measure its off-shell production, where the Higgs boson mass is far away from its nominal value, and relating it to its on-shell production, where the mass is close to the nominal value. Here we report evidence for such off-shell contributions to the production cross-section of two Z bosons with data from the CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We constrain the total rate of the off-shell Higgs boson contribution beyond the Z boson pair production threshold,...

Experimental investigation of instability of fluid mud layer under surface wave motion

    Abstract
Motivated by environmental impacts of surface-wave induced mixing of fluid mud with clear water in nearshore areas, this paper presents quantitative measurements of excitation of interfacial waves over a bed mud layer by a surface wave in a wave flume. After an initial fluidization process, a quasi-standing interfacial wave comprised of four interfacial waves was observed at the interface as a result of a resonant wave interaction with the surface wave. The interfacial waves were subharmonic to the surface wave and traveled at the maximum possible angle from it. The growth rate and kinematic properties of the interfacial waves were measured, and good agreement with theoretical predictions of...

Correlation-Aware flow consolidation for load balancing and beyond

    , Article Performance Evaluation Review ; Volume 49, Issue 4 , 2022 , Pages 105-110 ; 01635999 (ISSN) Ketabi, S ; Buckley, M ; Pazhooheshy, P ; Farahvash, F ; Ganjali, Y ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Existing load balancing solutions rely on direct or indirect measurement of rates (or congestion) averaged over short periods of time. Sudden fluctuations in flow rates can lead to significant undershooting/overshooting of target link loads. In this paper, we make the case for taking variations and correlations of flows into account in load balancing. We propose correlation-aware flow consolidation, i.e. aggregating inversely correlated (or uncorrelated) flows into superflows and using them as building blocks for load balancing. Superflows are smoother than individual flows, and thus are easier to estimate with a higher confidence, and can reduce overshooting/undershooting of link...

    Abstract
The bus network design problem is an important problem in transportation planning. It is the problem of determining a network of bus lines which best achieves a predetermined objective. This may be done with or without the presence of rapid transit lines. This study is devoted to solving this problem using genetic algorithm. The fitness function is defined as the benefit to the users of the bus network less the cost of the operator of the network, which is to be maximized subject to constraints that properly distribute bus routes over the study area. Objective function calculation depends on the basic data of the city and its bus lines and does not need traffic assignment results. So, it is...

    Φ-Entropic measures of correlation

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Information Theory ; Volume 64, Issue 4 , 2018 , Pages 2193-2211 ; 00189448 (ISSN) Beigi, S ; Gohari, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A measure of correlation is said to have the tensorization property if it does not change when computed for i.i.d. copies. More precisely, a measure of correlation between two random variables X, Y denoted by rho (X, Y), has the tensorization property if ρ(Xn, Yn)=ρ (X, Y) where (Xn, Yn) denotes n i.i.d. copies of (X, Y). Two well-known examples of such measures are the maximal correlation and the hypercontractivity ribbon (HC ribbon). We show that the maximal correlation and the HC ribbon are special cases of the new notion of Φ-ribbons, defined in this paper for a class of convex functions Φ. Φ-ribbon reduces to the HC ribbon and the maximal correlation for special choices of Φ, and is a...

    Abstract
Agent oriented methodologies have become one of the most important issues of software development. Several methodologies have been proposed to guide developers through various stages of agent based system development. Deciding which methodology to be selected in a specific case is a critical problem. This paper presents a quantitative approach to evaluate complexity of agent oriented methodologies due to dependency of stages and phases. This framework focuses on the lifecycle of a methodology and relations between its stages. The proposed models of the methodology and overall process of its lifecycle is discussed thoughtfully and the complexity of the entire methodology lifecycle is...

Closed-form positioning in MIMO radars with antenna location uncertainties

    Abstract
In this study, the authors propose an algorithm to reduce the effect of antenna location uncertainty for locating moving targets in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems. The proposed method is a closed-form solution which employs the measurements of multiple independent targets to alleviate the antenna location uncertainties. The authors establish a pseudo-linear set of equations by using the range and the range-rate auxiliary parameters, which allows the problem to be solved using a two-stage weighted least squares estimator. The proposed method is shown analytically and confirmed by simulations to attain the Cramer-Rao lower bound under small error conditions. The...

    Abstract
In this research, the centrifugal compressor of a turbocharger is investigated experimentally and numerically. Performance characteristics of the compressor were obtained experimentally by measurements of rotor speed and flow parameters at the inlet and outlet of the compressor. Three dimensional flow field in the impeller and diffuser was analyzed numerically using a full Navier-Stokes program with SST turbulence model. The performance characteristics of the compressor were obtained numerically, which were then compared with the experimental results. The comparison shows good agreement. Furthermore, the effect of area ratio and tip clearance on the performance parameters and flow field was...

Quantum key distribution with no shared reference frame

    Abstract
Any quantum communication task requires a common reference frame (i.e., phase, coordinate system). In particular, quantum key distribution requires different bases for preparation and measurements of states which are obviously based on the existence of a common frame of reference. Here, we show how QKD can be achieved in the absence of any common frame of reference. We study the coordinate reference frame, where the two parties do not even share a single direction, but the method can be generalized to other general frames of reference, pertaining to other groups of transformations. © 2019, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature

    Abstract
We study queues with impatient customers and Processor Sharing (PS) discipline as well as other variants of PS discipline, namely, Discriminatory Processor Sharing (DPS) and Generalized Processor Sharing (GPS) disciplines, where customers have deadlines until the end of service (DES). Customers arrive according to a state-dependent Poisson process and have general impatience. Customers have exponential service times with state-dependent service rates. Analytical methods based on simple Markov chains are given for the performance analysis of such queues. The principal measures of performance are the steady-state probability of missing deadline and the steady-state probability of blocking....

    Abstract
Context. Brown dwarfs are transition objects between stars and planets that are still poorly understood, for which several competing mechanisms have been proposed to describe their formation. Mass measurements are generally difficult to carry out for isolated objects as well as for brown dwarfs orbiting low-mass stars, which are often too faint for a spectroscopic follow-up. Aims. Microlensing provides an alternative tool for the discovery and investigation of such faint systems. Here, we present an analysis of the microlensing event OGLE-2019-BLG-0033/MOA-2019-BLG-035, which is caused by a binary system composed of a brown dwarf orbiting a red dwarf. Methods. Thanks to extensive ground...

    Abstract
Measurements of the inclusive and differential fiducial cross sections of the Higgs boson are presented, using the τ lepton decay channel. The differential cross sections are measured as functions of the Higgs boson transverse momentum, jet multiplicity, and transverse momentum of the leading jet in the event, if any. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb-1. These are the first differential measurements of the Higgs boson cross section in the final state of two τ leptons. In final states with a large jet multiplicity or with a...

    Abstract
In recent years, declining fossil fuel reserves and increasing environmental concerns led to higher utilization of renewable energy source (RES). One of the RES is Solar energy which is abundantly found in different areas of the globe, particularly in Iran. The aim of this research is to select a suitable site for constructing a solar power plant to generate electricity-hydrogen in southern Iran, Kerman province. For this purpose, a new hybrid Multi criteria decision making method is used. The Stepwise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA)method is used to weigh the criteria and the Measurement of alternatives and ranking according to Compromise solution (MARCOS)method is used to rank...
