Sparse representation-based super-resolution for diffusion weighted images

    , Article 21st Iranian Conference on Biomedical Engineering, ICBME ; 26-28 November , 2014 , pp. 12-16 ; ISBN: 9781479974177 Afzali, M ; Fatemizadeh, E ; Soltanian-Zadeh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) is a non-invasive method for investigating the brain white matter structure. It can be used to evaluate fiber bundles in the brain. However, clinical acquisitions are often low resolution. This paper proposes a method for improving the resolution using sparse representation. In this method a non-diffusion weighted image (bO) is utilized to learn the patches and then diffusion weighted images are reconstructed based on the trained dictionary. Our method is compared with bilinear, nearest neighbor and bicubic interpolation methods. The proposed method shows improvement in terms of Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Structural SIMilarity (SSIM)

Interpolation of orientation distribution functions (ODFs) in Q-ball imaging

    Abstract
Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DTMRI) is a non-invasive method for investigating the brain white matter structure. It can be used to evaluate fiber bundles in the brain but in the regions with crossing fibers, it fails. To resolve this problem, high angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) with a large number of diffusion encoding directions is used and for reconstruction, the Q-ball method is applied. In this method, orientation distribution function (ODF) of fibers can be calculated. Mathematical models play a crucial role in the field of ODF. For instance, in registering Q-ball images for applications like group analysis or atlas construction, one needs to interpolate...

Autoregressive modeling of the photoplethysmogram AC signal amplitude changes after flow-mediated dilation in healthy and diabetic subjects

    , Article 2012 19th Iranian Conference of Biomedical Engineering, ICBME 2012 ; 2012 , Pages 170-173 ; 9781467331302 (ISBN) Amiri, M ; Zahedi, E ; Behnia, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
It is proved that the endothelial (artery inner lumen cells) function is associated with cardiovascular risk factors. Among all the common non-invasive methods employed in the research setting for assessing endothelial function, flow-mediated dilation is the most widely used one. This technique measures endothelial function by inducing reactive hyperemia using temporary arterial occlusion and measuring the resultant relative increase in blood vessel diameter via ultrasound. In this paper, the limitations associated with the ultrasound technique are overcome by using the photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal recorded during FMD. The correctness of this approach is investigated by modeling the AC...

Technique for online tracking of a utility harmonic impedance using by synchronising the measured samples

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 10, Issue 5 , 2016 , Pages 1240-1247 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Zebardast, A ; Mokhtari, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Utility harmonic impedance estimation is an important stage for the study and control of electrical networks power quality such as harmonic sharing determination between a utility and a customer at a point of common coupling (PCC). In this estimation, non-invasive methods, as compared with invasive methods, are more desirable since they do not need to apply intentional disturbances to the power network and can work based on natural load fluctuations. The only concern about such methods is the method accuracy. These methods require simultaneous and synchronous measurements of the voltage and current at the PCC. However, one of the causes of error in the utility harmonic impedance measurement...

Non-invasive techniques for assessing the endothelial dysfunction: ultrasound versus photoplethysmography

    , Article IFMBE Proceedings, 3 December 2008 through 6 December 2008 ; Volume 23 , 2009 , Pages 65-68 ; 16800737 (ISSN) ; 9783540928409 (ISBN) Zaheditochai, M ; Jaafar, R ; Zahedi, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Endothelial dysfunction, which can be noninvasively assessed by flow mediated vasodilation (FMD), predicts an increased rate of adverse cardiovascular events. The endothelial dysfunction is considered as a leading cause of development and progression of the atherosclerotic process. The main aim of this study is to review different non-invasive methods to assess the endothelial dysfunction and to propose enhancements to a new method based on photoplethysmography (PPG). First, non-invasive techniques developed for the evaluation of peripheral endothelial function (including the Doppler ultrasound (US)) will be reviewed. Although noninvasive, US -based techniques present a few disadvantages. To...

Canonical polyadic decomposition for principal diffusion direction extraction in diffusion weighted imaging

    , Article 2017 25th Iranian Conference on Electrical Engineering, ICEE 2017, 2 May 2017 through 4 May 2017 ; 2017 , Pages 122-127 ; 9781509059638 (ISBN) Afzali, M ; Hajipour Sardouie, S ; Fatemizadeh, E ; Soltanian Zadeh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Diffusion weighted imaging is a non-invasive method for investigation of brain fiber bundles. In diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), the diffusion of water molecules is assumed Gaussian, therefore, it can just show a single fiber direction in a voxel. To overcome this limitation, a number of high angular resolution diffusion imaging methods have been proposed. One of these techniques is Q-ball imaging. Using this method, we can extract orientation distribution function (ODF) that shows the orientations of multiple fibers in a voxel. For extracting the fiber directions, the maxima of the ODFs are conventionally determined. However, the results of this approach are sensitive to noise. To improve...

New method for assessing the utility harmonic impedance based on fuzzy logic

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 11, Issue 10 , 2017 , Pages 2448-2456 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Zebardast, A ; Mokhtari, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This study proposes a novel non-invasive method for estimating the utility harmonic impedance. Since the major concern about non-invasive methods is the dependency of the accuracy of the results on background harmonic fluctuations, proper measured samples are selected using a three-point data selection technique to increase the method accuracy. Then, a new non-invasive method for the evaluation of the utility harmonic impedance at a point of common coupling (PCC) based on fuzzy logic is presented. In the proposed method, fuzzy logic is applied to the constrained recursive least squares algorithm (CRLS) by designing a set of fuzzy if-then rules. Due to the changes in the quantities at a...

A Physiological model-based study of flow-mediated dilation in peripheral arteries using finger photoplethysmogram signal

    , Article 2017 24th Iranian Conference on Biomedical Engineering and 2017 2nd International Iranian Conference on Biomedical Engineering, ICBME 2017, 30 November 2017 through 1 December 2017 ; 2018 ; 9781538636091 (ISBN) Habib Parsafar, M ; Zahedi, E ; Vosoughi Vahdat, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Flow-mediated dilation measurement in the brachial artery using ultrasound imaging (FMD-US) is a common noninvasive procedure for endothelial function evaluation in the peripheral arteries. As FMD-US is operator-dependent and involves onerous equipment, its use has been mostly confined to research settings. In this paper, we propose to use the more accessible finger photoplethysmogram signal in conjunction with the FMD test (FMD-PPG) as a surrogate method. To this end, a tube-load physiological model of the upper arterial path in the arm is developed. Signals acquired from young and elderly subjects (N=20) are then investigated using model parameter estimation by the genetic algorithm. Our...

    Abstract
Background: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an imaging method that provides real time in situ visualization of human tissue at sub-micrometer resolution. Prior research shows OCT is suitable for imaging the epidermis. Method: In this study, we utilized OCT images to noninvasively measure the quantitative effect of a specialized antiaging product compared with a petrolatum control in a split-face trial. The images acquired with OCT were analyzed to determine the average surface roughness, Ra, and surface roughness depth, Rz, of the imaged skin. These values were measured over the duration of a 28-day trial. Results: The petrolatum treated skin showed a 2.1% and 2.9% decrease in Ra and...

    Abstract
Radiopacity is sometimes an essential characteristic of biomaterials that can help clinicians perform follow-ups during pre- and post-interventional radiological imaging. Due to their chemical composition and structure, most bioceramics are inherently radiopaque but can still be doped/mixed with radiopacifiers to increase their visualization during or after medical procedures. The radiopacifiers are frequently heavy elements of the periodic table, such as Bi, Zr, Sr, Ba, Ta, Zn, Y, etc., or their relevant compounds that can confer enhanced radiopacity. Radiopaque bioceramics are also intriguing additives for biopolymers and hybrids, which are extensively researched and developed nowadays for...

    Abstract
In this paper, a model-based dynamics equation for the needle movement through the soft tissue is developed. A model-based control scheme which uses the force estimation calculated through the simulated tissue deformation data and the dynamic finite element as the tissue model is proposed. To compare the performance of the proposed controller, a PD controller is also used for the proposed needle dynamics equation. It is shown that even with uncertainty in model parameters; the mode-based controller outperforms the PD controller. Furthermore, although increasing the controller gain improves the performance of PD, but the model-based controller's performance is still superior

ECG-derived respiration estimation from single-lead ECG using gaussian process and phase space reconstruction methods

    , Article Biomedical Signal Processing and Control ; Volume 45 , 2018 , Pages 80-90 ; 17468094 (ISSN) Janbakhshi, P ; Shamsollahi, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
Respiratory activity influences electrocardiographic measurements (ECG) in various ways. Therefore, extraction of respiratory information from ECG, namely ECG-derived respiratory (EDR), can be used as a promising noninvasive method to monitor respiration activity. In this paper, an automatic EDR extraction system using single-lead ECG is proposed. Respiration effects on ECG are categorized into two different models: additive and multiplicative based models. After selection of a proper model for each subject using a proposed criterion, gaussian process (GP) and phase space reconstruction area (PSRArea) are introduced as new methods of EDR extraction for additive and multiplicative models,...

    Abstract
We address the noninvasive temperature estimation from pulse-echo radio frequency signals from standard diagnostic ultrasound imaging equipment. In particular, we investigate the use of a high-resolution spectral estimation method for tracking frequency shifts at two or more harmonic frequencies associated with temperature change. The new approach, employing generalized second-order statistics, is shown to produce superior frequency shift estimates when compared to conventional high-resolution spectral estimation methods Seip and Ebbini (1995). Furthermore, temperature estimates from the new algorithm are compared with results from the more commonly used echo shift method described in Simon...

    Abstract
Gas embolotherapy (GE) is a developing medical method which can be utilized either as an autonomous therapeutic method to treat vascularized solid tumors, or it can be combined with other medical procedures—such as high-intensity focused ultrasound—to improve their efficiency. This paper is dedicated to investigating the different parameters which influence bubble lodging inside human vasculature via 2D-modeling of bubble dynamics in arteries’ and arterioles’ bifurcations which are potential sticking positions. Values used in the simulations are in accordance with the non-dimensional physiological numbers. It is found out that inlet pressure plays a decisive role in bubble lodging; the lower...

Subject-specific regression equations to estimate lower spinal loads during symmetric and asymmetric static lifting

    Abstract
Workplace safety assessment, personalized treatment design and back pain prevention programs require accurate subject-specific estimation of spinal loads. Since no noninvasive method can directly estimate spinal loads, easy-to-use regression equations that are constructed based on the results of complex musculoskeletal models appear as viable alternatives. Thus, we aim to develop subject-specific regression equations of L4-L5 and L5-S1 shear and compression forces during various symmetric/asymmetric tasks using a nonlinear personalized finite element musculoskeletal trunk model. Kinematics and electromyography (EMG) activities of 19 young healthy subjects were collected during 64 different...

    Abstract
As a non-invasive method, photographic imaging techniques offer some interesting potentials for characterization of soil moisture content in unsaturated porous media, enabling mapping at very fine resolutions in both space and time. Although less explored, the wealth of soil moisture data provided by photographic imaging is also appealing for the estimation of unsaturated soil hydraulic parameters through inverse modeling. However, imaging data have some unique characteristics, including high susceptibility to noise, which can negatively affect the parameter estimation process. In this study a sequential data assimilation approach is developed to simultaneously update soil moisture content...

    Abstract
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a non-invasive method that helps to analyze brain function based on BOLD signal fluctuations. Functional Connectivity (FC) catches the transient relationship between various brain regions usually measured by correlation analysis. The elements of the correlation matrix are between -1 to 1. Some of them are very small values usually related to weak and spurious correlations due to noises and artifacts. They can not be concluded as real strong correlations between brain regions and their existence could make a misconception and leads to fake results. It is crucial to make a conclusion based on reliable and informative correlations. In order to...
