    , Article Applied Catalysis A: General ; Vol. 462–463 , July , 2013 , Pages 82–90 Ghasemia, S. (Shahnaz) ; Esfandiarb, A. (Ali) ; Rahman Setayesha, S. (Shahrbano) ; Habibi-Yangjehc, A. (Aziz) ; Iraji zadb, A. (Azam) ; Gholamia, M .R. (Mohammad Reza) ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
TiO2–graphene (TiO2–GR) nanocomposites were synthesized using photocatalytic reduction method. TiO2–GR nanocomposites were thereafter doped with noble metals (Pt and Pd) by chemical reduction of the corresponding cations. The samples were characterized by different techniques. The addition of GR to TiO2 decreases the crystalline size of TiO2 due to the homogeneous dispersion of the TiO2 nanoparticles on GR sheets and prevention of coagulation of TiO2 nanoparticles during synthesis process. In addition, the surface area of TiO2 was increased by addition of GR and deposition of noble metals which helps to prevent agglomeration of graphene sheets and TiO2 nanoparticles. Red shifts to the higher...

Electro-mechanical bending analysis of ionic polymer metal nanocomposites (IPMNCs)

    , Article Mechanics Research Communications ; Vol. 62 , December , 2014 , pp. 77-82 ; ISSN: 00936413 Ozmaian, M ; Baghani, M ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A nonlinear electro-elasticity formulation for a cantilever beam made of IPMNC is used to obtain constitutive equations. Using the measured experimental data, the constitutive parameters connecting the free energy to the beam characteristics are calibrated. The results show that the constitutive equations are able to include the softening behavior of the material under applied voltages as well as the shift of the bending neutral axis from the geometrical midline of the beam by a closed-form solution which bridges between macroscopic and microscopic scales. The equations consider large deformations of thin and thick beams

All optical switch based on Fano resonance in metal nanocomposite photonic crystals

    , Article Optics Communications ; Volume 284, Issue 8 , 2011 , Pages 2230-2235 ; 00304018 (ISSN) Asadi, R ; Malek Mohammad, M ; Khorasani, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We investigate the potential of plasmonic resonance in metal nanocomposite materials for the design of photonic crystal all optical switches by numerical methods. We study the absorption effect of the plasmonic resonance on the Fano resonances of one dimensional photonic crystal slabs covered by a metal nanocomposite layer. It is shown that the absorption reduces the contrast of the Fano resonances. However, for adequate metal nanoparticle concentrations it is possible to achieve both sufficiently sharp Fano resonance and strong Kerr nonlinearity, which provides a suitable condition for the design of high contrast and low threshold switches

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Ozmaian, Masoumeh (Author) ; Naghdabadi, Reza (Supervisor) ; Irajizad, Azam (Supervisor) ; Ejtehadi, Mohammad Reza (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Ionic polymer metal nanocomposites (IPMNCs) are among the advance materials which have been widely used recently as smart materials. These nanocomposites, which are made of polymeric layers (Nafion) plated by metallic or non-metallic conductive electrodes, show large deformations under low applied voltages. The advance materials like these nanocomposites have resolved the problems of the conventional actuators and helped in producing accurate systems.
Several methods have been used to predict the behavior of IPMNCs which any of them consider some simplifying assumptions. In these materials physical phenomena happen at the molecular scale and deformations observed at the large scale....

Incorporating aspect ratio in a new modeling approach for strengthening of MMCs and its extension from micro to nano scale

    , Article Advanced Composite Materials ; Volume 19, Issue 4 , Apr , 2010 , Pages 299-316 ; 09243046 (ISSN) Zehtab Yazdi, A ; Bagheri, R ; Zebarjad, S. M ; Razavi Hesabi, Z ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The strengthening behavior of particle reinforced metal-matrix composites is primarily attributed to the dislocation strengthening effect and the load transfer effect. To account for these two effects in a unified way, a new multi-scale approach is developed in this paper incorporating the aspect ratio effect into the geometrically necessary dislocation strengthening relationships. By making use of this multi-scale approach, the deformation behavior of metal-matrix composites (MMCs) and metal-matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs) as a function of size, volume fraction, aspect ratio, etc. of the particles has been investigated. Comparison with the previously proposed models and the available...

    Abstract
Poly (vinyl alcohol)/graphene oxide (PVA/GO) gamma irradiated nanocomposite films and hydrogels were prepared. In composite films, GO was initially irradiated by gamma ray in order to improve interactions between GO and PVA. The film containing 1 wt-% GO was very strong where tensile modulus and tensile yield strength were 45 and 115% higher than those of pure PVA. In the second set of experiments PVA/GO hydrogels were made by irradiating PVA/GO suspensions by gamma ray at various doses. It was an interesting finding that GO increased the gel portion of hydrogels through contribution of H-bonds between PVA and GO. The hydrogels prepared at 20 kGy had remarkable water swelling ratio that...

    Abstract
In the current study, thin-film nanocomposite membranes (TFN-Mx) based on a zwitterion-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) have been developed for the forward osmosis (FO) salt-water separation process. The active polyamide layer was formed through the interfacial polymerization of the m-phenylenediamine aqueous phase (with or without the presence of MIL-125-NH-CC-Cys) and the trimesoyl chloride organic phase. In comparison with the results from the surface of the unmodified membrane, a nanofiller-incorporated TFN-M0.10 membrane represents a smoother and more wettable surface that collaborates synergically to enhance the membrane antifouling ability. Among the examined membranes,...
