    Seismic Retrofit of Reinforced Concrete Columns With Post-Tensioned Metal Strips

    Abstract
    This thesis presents the results of an experimental and analytical study on the application of the strapping technique for seismic retrofit of reinforced concrete columns. In this technique, the columns are externally confined by post-tensioned metal strips. In the first phase of the experiments, the compressive stress-strain behavior of strapped cylindrical and prismatic specimens was studied. Effects of several parameters were studied including shape and size of specimens, strength of plain concrete, mechanical characteristics of confining strips and the level of pre-tensioning of the strips. The second phase of the tests included studying the lateral performance of strapped RC columns....

    Abstract
    A circuit model is proposed for periodic 1-D array of metallic strips in the sub-wavelength regime. The parameters of the proposed circuit and their dependence on frequency are all explicitly given by closed form expressions. The necessity of using numerical simulation to extract model parameters is thus sidestepped. It is demonstrated that the proposed model is valid at different incident angles and for arbitrary surrounding mediums given that there is only one propagating diffracted order outside the grating and only one guided mode supported by the slits. Both major polarizations are studied in this paper

    Abstract
    Adobe structures are considered as masonry structures which are out of scope of 2800 Iranian code. Due to this code, since these structures are made of weak materials, they do not have a considerable resistance to earthquakes. Since these structures can be found all around Iran; therefore, seismic study of walls as an important component of these structures, is, indeed, necessary. During this study, cyclic tests on three types of adobe walls, without opening, with window-opening, and with door-and-window-opening with a scale of 2:3 were done to study their in-plane behavior and also their failure modes.     Prediction of thermal responses in continuous hot strip rolling processes

    Abstract
    Thermal behavior and require power in hot continuous strip rolling are predicted by means of a coupled finite element-upper bound approach. A thermal-finite element analysis is utilized to simultaneously determine temperature distributions within the work-piece and the work-rolls while an upper bound solution is employed at the same time to estimate the rate of heat of deformation and the required power in each rolling stand. The proposed model can be applied for determining thermal behaviors of the strip and the work-rolls in single and multi- pass rolling schedules while the effects of different parameters including initial temperature and rolling speed can be considered in the analysis....

    Abstract
    A simple transmission line model is presented to emulate field behavior in a one dimensional metallic grating in TE polarization. The proposed model is based on the fact that pairs of adjacent metallic strips in the structure act as a parallel plate waveguide supporting TE guided modes for low enough frequencies. The effect of fringing fields is also included and a very good approximate model is obtained to simulate metallic gratings in TE polarization

    Abstract
    This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the application of pre-stressed high strength metal strips in retrofit of RC columns. Six 2/3 scale were deliberately designated with insufficient transverse reinforcement details and tested under constant axial and cyclic lateral load reversals. The level of axial load and the pattern of strengthening were parameters of this study. It was observed that the technique has been capable to enhance the lateral behavior of columns significantly, in terms of ductility. Very ductile behavior was obtained.     A mathematical model for cold rolling of symmetrical sandwich strip is proposed using the upper bound theorem to investigate the plastic deformation behavior of the strip at the roll gap. The velocity fields derived from the proposed upper bound model can satisfy automatically the volume constancy and the velocity boundary conditions within the roll gap.     This paper presents analytical part of an investigation on the application of prestressed strips for concrete confinement. In this paper, an analytical model is proposed to predict the compressive stress-strain curve of strapped concrete as a function of the confinement level.     A thermo-elastic analysis coupled with a phase change model is employed to evaluate thermal stresses as well as progress of austenite decomposition after hot strip rolling operations. The thermo-mechanical finite element analysis is utilized to assess the distributions of temperature and thermal stresses during cooling while at the same time, a model based on the additivity rule is used to determine the rate of austenite to ferrite decomposition.
