Effects of corrugated roughness on gaseous slip flow forced convection in microtubes

    , Article Journal of Thermophysics and Heat Transfer ; Volume 25, Issue 2 , 2011 , Pages 262-271 ; 08878722 (ISSN) Sadeghi, A ; Salarieh, H ; Saidi, M. H ; Mozafari, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Because of technological restrictions, it is actually impossible to fabricate smooth microchannels. Therefore, exploring the roughness effects on the flow characteristics at microscale is of great importance for scientific communities. The present investigation deals with the effects of corrugated roughness on the fully developed slip flow forced convection in micropipes. The governing equations subject to first-order slip boundary conditions are solved by means of the straightforward perturbation method. Closed-form expressions are obtained for the dimensionless velocity and temperature distributions, for the friction coefficient and pressure drop, and finally for the Nusselt number. The...

    Abstract
In the last decade, extensive attention is devoted to intelligibly designed materials of macro/micro-structures containing the fluid flow. In this study, intelligent control and vibrational stability of cantilevered fluid conveying macro/micro-tubes utilizing axially functionally graded (AFG) materials are considered. The governing equation of motion of the system is derived based on modified couple stress theory and then is discretized using Galerkin method. A detailed investigation is carried out to elaborate the influence of various parameters such as material properties, axial compressive load, and Pasternak foundation on the dynamical behavior of the system, all of which are influential...

    Abstract
In this study, dynamic modeling of an elbow axially functionally graded (AFG) macro/micro-tube carrying magnetic flow with different cross-sections is considered. Parametric optimization is performed for vibration suppression of such fluid-interaction systems. Implementing computer simulations, passive vibration control procedures, along with the effect of AFG materials and magnetic properties of the fluid as well as precisely manufactured geometry of the system, is investigated. It is assumed that the material characteristics of the system vary in the longitudinal direction based on exponential and power-law distribution profiles. Influence of the downstream inclination angle and...

Combined influences of viscous dissipation, non-uniform Joule heating and variable thermophysical properties on convective heat transfer in microtubes

    , Article International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer ; Volume 55, Issue 4 , January , 2012 , Pages 762-772 ; 00179310 (ISSN) Yavari, H ; Sadeghi, A ; Saidi, M. H ; Chakraborty, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This study presents a comprehensive investigation on hydrodynamic and thermal transport properties of mixed electroosmotically and pressure driven flow in microtubes. Particular emphasis is given to investigating the combined consequences of viscous dissipation, non-uniform Joule heating, and variable thermophysical properties. Analytical solutions are obtained using the Debye-Hückel linearization and constant fluid properties assumption, while a numerical solution is presented for variable fluid properties and non-uniform distribution of Joule heating. The results indicate that, viscous heating effect is pronounced significantly when a favorable pressure gradient exists and cannot be...

    Abstract
The novel idea of the Hydromagnetic Micropump and Flow Controller (HMFC) is used in this paper to construct a laboratory setup capable of bidirectional pumping and controlling the flow in microtubes. A laboratory setup, which contains no moving parts, is integrated with a pressure-driven flow setup to make the presented HMFC device. The device operation is based on controllable motion of magnetic particles, added to the carrier fluid, caused by the magnetic field, produced by solenoids located just next to the microtube. The magnitude of these forces is proportional to the strength and gradient of magnetic field which, in turn, is related to the electrical current and arrangement of the...
