    ASTM International  2022
    Abstract
In this paper, the effects of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and nanographene (GP) on the mechanical performance of the cementitious mortars were investigated in different environments. Six mix designs were fabricated by considering the previous studies and exposed to potable water, acidic, and alkaline environments. The GP and MWCNTs partially replaced the cement with 0.25 %, 0.5 %, and 1 % of its weight. The standard mechanical tests, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis were performed on the specimens. The results indicated that including the MWCNTs and GP increases the compressive strength by 10 % and 20 % and similarly improves the tensile...

Characterization of polyamide 6/carbon nanotube composites prepared by melt mixing-effect of matrix molecular weight and structure

    , Article Composites Part B: Engineering ; Volume 78 , 2015 , Pages 50-64 ; 13598368 (ISSN) Faghihi, M ; Shojaei, A ; Bagheri, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Effects of molecular weight and structure of polyamide 6 (PA6) on morphology and properties of PA6/MWCNT prepared by melt mixing were investigated. Microscopic analysis showed fine dispersion of MWCNT within low viscosity PA6s due to domination of melt infiltration into MWCNT agglomerate at low viscosity matrices with linear structure. Rheological data indicated good interfacial interaction with no percolation of MWCNT up to 2 wt% loading. DSC thermograms showed nucleating role of MWCNT on crystallization of PA6s with marginal effect on crystallinity. Experimental data supported with micromechanical model showed limited improvement on mechanical properties, but it was closely consistent with...

Improving mixed-matrix membrane performance: Via PMMA grafting from functionalized NH2-UiO-66

    , Article Journal of Materials Chemistry A ; Volume 6, Issue 6 , 2018 , Pages 2775-2791 ; 20507488 (ISSN) Molavi, H ; Shojaei, A ; Mousavi, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The major obstacles in gas separation by mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) are poor dispersion and poor affinity between polymers and fillers. The present study demonstrates that these challenges can be overcome appropriately by utilizing a series of synthesized stand-alone MMMs. The matrix used was polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and the MMMs were synthesized by in situ polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of UiO-66, NH2-UiO-66 and vinyl group attached UiO-66. In situ polymerization of MMA in the presence of vinyl attached UiO-66 resulted in PMMA grafted UiO-66 with a high degree of grafting. Microscopic analysis by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM)...

Properties of alumina nanoparticle-filled nitrile-butadiene-rubber/ phenolic-resin blend prepared by melt mixing

    Abstract
Effect of alumina nanoparticle (ANP) on the properties of rubber compounds based on nitrile-butadiene-rub- ber (NBR) and NBR/phenolic-resin (PH) blend is examined. To investigate the surface characteristics of the nanoparticles on the performance of nanoalumina- filled compounds, trimethoxyvinylsilane (MVS) is attached chemically on the surface of ANP through an appropriate functionalization process. Various NBR and NBR/Ph compounds filled with ANP and functionalized ANP (f-ANP) are prepared via melt mixing using traditional open two-roll mill. Microscopic analysis carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals good dispersion of...

    Abstract
The major obstacles in gas separation by mixed-matrix composite membranes (MMCMs) are poor dispersion and poor affinity between polymers and fillers. The present study demonstrates that these challenges can be overcome appropriately by utilizing a series of synthesized MMCMs. MMCMs were prepared with UV-curable polyurethane acrylate and UiO-66 as selective layer and polyester/polysulfone (PS/PSF) as support layer. The physical properties of prepared MMCMs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Microscopic analysis by FESEM revealed that desirable nanoscale dispersion of UiO-66,...

Experimental investigation of rheological and morphological properties of water in crude oil emulsions stabilized by a lipophilic surfactant

    Abstract
Rheological behavior of two crude oils and their surfactant-stabilized emulsions with initial droplet sizes ranging from 0.5 to 75 μm were investigated at various temperatures under steady and dynamic shear testing conditions. In order to evaluate the morphology and Stability of emulsions, microscopic analysis was carried out over three months and average diameter and size distribution of dispersed droplets were determined. The water content and surfactant concentration ranged from 10 to 60% vol/vol and 0.1 to 10% wt/vol, respectively. The results indicated that the rheological properties and the physical structure and stability of emulsions were significantly influenced by the water content...

    Abstract
The present study analyzed the dose-dependent cyto- and genotoxicity of graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide on spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) for the first time. The results showed that graphene oxide significantly increased oxidative stress at concentrations of 100 and 400 μg/ml, while low concentrations did not have a significant effect. In addition, according to the MTT assay, the cell number decreased in high-concentration (100 and 400 μg/ml) graphene oxide-treated samples compared to untreated cells. However, a reduced graphene-treated sample demonstrated a significant increase in cell number. Moreover, microscopic analysis found high concentrations of graphene nanosheets in...

    Abstract
In this investigation, sol-gel synthesized nanoporous silica thin films, annealed at different temperatures, with long time superhydrophilic property have been studied. Two kinds of sol-gel silica thin films were fabricated by dip-coating of glass substrates in two different solutions; with low and high water. The transparent coated films were dried at 100 °C and then annealed in a temperature range of 200-500 °C. The average water contact angle of the silica films prepared with low water content and annealed at 300 °C measured about 5° for a long time (6 months) without any UV irradiation. Instead, adding water into the sol resulted in silica films with an average water contact angle...
