    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 454-455 , 2007 , Pages 89-98 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Razavi Hesabi, Z ; Hafizpour, H. R ; Simchi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
The densification response of aluminum powder reinforced with 5 vol.% nanometric alumina particles (35 nm) during uniaxial compaction in a rigid die was studied. The composite powder was prepared by blending and mechanical milling procedures. To determine the effect of the reinforcement nanoparticles on the compressibility of aluminum powder, monolithic Al powder, i.e. without the addition of alumina, was also examined. It was shown that at the early stage of compaction when the rearrangement of particles is the dominant mechanism of the densification, disintegration of the nanoparticle clusters and agglomerates under the applied load contributes in the densification of the composite powder...

    Abstract
In high speed machining, friction between the moving parts, generates heat. One of the major causes of thermal errors in linear axes is the heat generated in ball screw during operation at high speed. Thermal errors affect the accuracy of the linear axes and can cause a deviation from the nominal machining circular motion. The subject of this paper is to study the effects of feed velocity and ball screw Preload on the accuracy of circular motion. The temperature rise in the ball screw is measured by a laser thermometer. The errors in the linear and circular motions are measured by laser interferometer and ball bar. Training a neural network by the test results, thermal errors in all parts of...

Bifurcation analysis of nonlinear milling process with tool wear and process damping: Sub-harmonic resonance under regenerative chatter

    , Article International Journal of Mechanical Sciences ; Vol. 85, issue , August , 2014 , p. 1-19 Moradi, H ; Vossoughi, G ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, bifurcation analysis is performed for the nonlinear milling process under sub-harmonic resonance and regenerative chatter, with tool wear and process damping effects. Multiple-scales approach is used to construct analytical approximate solutions for non-autonomous parametrically excited equations of the system with time delay terms. The new bifurcation parameters are the detuning parameter (deviation of the tooth passing frequency from three times of the chatter frequency), damping ratio (affected by process damping) and tool wear width. Jump phenomenon and multi-values responses are observed in the first order solution under sub-harmonic resonance condition. Periodic,...

    , Article Journal of Process Control ; Volume 23, Issue 5 , 2013 , Pages 631-648 ; 09591524 (ISSN) Moradi, H ; Vossoughi, G ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Salarieh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
During the milling process, self-excited vibration or chatter adversely affects tool life, surface quality and productivity rate. In this paper, nonlinear cutting forces of milling process are considered as a function of chip thickness with a complete third order polynomial (instead of the common linear dependency). An optimal control strategy is developed for chatter suppression of the system described through nonlinear delay differential equations. Counterbalance forces exerted by actuators in x and y directions are the control inputs. For optimal control problem, an appropriate performance index is defined such that the regenerative chatter is suppressed while control efforts are...

    , Article Mechanism and Machine Theory ; Volume 52 , June , 2012 , Pages 59-77 ; 0094114X (ISSN) Moradi, H ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Vossoughi, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
This paper deals with the problem of chatter suppression in milling process in order to achieve higher precision, better surface quality and larger material removal rate (MRR). The peripheral milling process is modeled as a two degrees of freedom system and the effects of tool wear and process damping are considered. It is shown that when regenerative chatter develops, both tool wear and process damping act as stabilizing factors. For larger values of depth of cut and consequently higher MRR, tunable vibration absorbers (TVA) (in x-y directions) are designed to improve stability. An optimal algorithm is developed which determines the optimum values for absorbers' parameters. The effects of...

    , Article Applied Mathematical Modelling ; Volume 39, Issue 2 , 2015 , Pages 600-620 ; 0307904X (ISSN) Moradi, H ; Vossoughi, G ; Behzad, M ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Inc  2015
    Abstract
In this paper, a tunable vibration absorber (TVA) is designed to suppress regenerative chatter in milling of cantilever plates. In machining industry, the majority of work-piece materials or the interaction of work-piece/cutting tool causes the cutting forces to demonstrate nonlinear behavior. The application of TVA (as a semi-active controller) is investigated for the process with an extensive nonlinear model of cutting forces. Under regenerative chatter conditions, optimum values of the absorber position and its spring stiffness are found such that the plate vibration is minimized. For this purpose, an optimal algorithm is developed based on mode summation approach. Results are presented...

    Abstract
The creep behavior of particulate Al-5vol.% SiC composite was investigated. The composite powder was produced by mechanical milling and hot extruded at 450°C at the ratio of 16:1. A creep test was carried out at a constant load at 598, 648, and 673 K. Using the existing equations proposed for the steady-state creep of metals, the threshold stress and the stress exponent of the creep as a function of temperature were determined. The stress exponent was found to be 3 at the temperature of 673 K and 8 at the lower temperatures, i.e. 598 and 648 K. The dependency of the threshold stress to temperature obeys the Arrhenius relationship with the energy term of 29 kJ mole-1

    Abstract
The morphological and microstructural changes during mechanical milling of Al powder mixed with 5 vol% nanoscaled alumina particles (35 nm) were studied. The milling was performed in a planetary ball mill under argon atmosphere for various times up to 24 h. The process was also conducted for Al and Al-5 vol% Al2O3 (1 μm) powders to explore the role of reinforcement nanoparticles on the mechanical milling stages. The results showed that the addition of hard particles accelerate the milling process, leading to faster work hardening rate and fracture of the aluminum matrix. Meanwhile, the structural evolution during mechanical milling of the microcomposite powder occurred faster than that of...

Effect of high energy ball milling on compressibility of nanostructured composite powder

    , Article Powder Metallurgy ; Volume 54, Issue 1 , Nov , 2011 , Pages 24-29 ; 00325899 (ISSN) Abdoli, H ; Farnoush, H. R ; Asgharzadeh, H ; Sadrnezhaad, S. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Compressibility of a nanostructured Al-5AlN composite powder synthesised via high energy ball milling for various times was studied by means of a modified Heckel equation. Since workhardening and morphological changes take place by milling evolution, the compressibility was consequently affected. Strengthening of composite compacts was influenced by milling and compaction processes, i.e. strength of compacts increased at longer milling times and higher compaction pressures. It was found that, at the initial stages of milling and higher compaction pressures, the strengthening was mostly affected from compaction process, whereas the milling strengthening fraction was near to unity at lower...

    , Article Acta Mechanica ; Vol. 225, issue. 3 , 2014 , pp. 715-734 ; ISSN: 00015970 Tajalli, S. A ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Akbari, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the stability of delay differential equations (DDEs), describing self-excited vibrations in a micro-milling process, is investigated based on semi-discretization (SD) method. Due to the stubby geometry of micro-tools, the shear deformation and rotary inertia effects are considered for modeling the structure. The extended Hamilton's principle is used to derive a detailed dynamical model of the spinning micro-tool with the support of misalignment in which the gyroscopic effects cause coupling of equations. Considering the actual geometry of the micro-end mill, exact dynamic stiffness (DS) formulations are developed to investigate the tool's free vibration characteristics. The...

    Abstract
One of the major issues related to parallel kinematic machine tools (PKMs) is their structural dependency on their configuration. In this paper, the machine configuration effect on its stability is investigated for the case of a Hexaglide machine tool. An FEM model of the Hexaglide machine tool is developed. The frequency response function (FRF) at the tool tip is obtained by a modal analysis. The numerical results are validated through comparison with those of an experimental modal test. The pose dependency of the PKM stability over its workspace is investigated. It is shown that the machine stability over the workspace is dependent on the spindle/tool/holder system characteristic. For...

    Abstract
This paper presents experimental results on the synthesis of nanostructured aluminium matrix nanocomposite powders by comilling of nanoscaled SiC and Al2O3 particles and micrometric aluminium powder. The effect of the nanometric reinforcement particles on the mechanical milling (MA) process of the soft matrix was studied by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy, laser particle size analyser and standard metallographic techniques. It was found that at the early stage of milling, the nanoparticles are smeared on the surface of the aluminium powder and thus do not significantly contribute in the MA process. As the milling continues, the hard...
