Evaluation of performance-based mix design for asphalt mixtures containing Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP)

, Article Construction and Building Materials ; Volume 235 , 2020 Sabouri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
In this research, the possibility of producing asphalt mixtures containing Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) that perform well from both fatigue and rutting points of view was studied. For this, seven asphalt mixtures with varying RAP percentage and total binder content were produced. All other variables, including the gradation and binder type, were kept constant. To better control for the production variables, the mixtures were produced in the laboratory. Fatigue and rutting properties of the mixtures were evaluated using the Simplified Viscoelastic Continuum Damage (S-VECD) model and Triaxial Stress Sweep (TSS) test, respectively. Next, FlexPAVETM software was utilized to predict the...

Design and Evaluation of Cold In-Place Recycling with Emulsion

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bazrafshan Moghadam, Bahador (Author) ; Tabatabaee, Nader (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Although there are several popular and standardized mix design methods for hot-mix asphalt, there is no universally accepted mix design method for cold in-place recycling (CIR). The varieties of recycling machinery, materials, quality control limitations, etc. have contributed to this problem. Most of CIR laboratory mix designs are based on 4-inch molds and maximum aggregate size of 1inch. The use of single unit train, which is the most common machinery used for CIR, results in poor control of aggregate gradation, especially when distresses such as fatigue cracking exist. This may lead to presence of aggregate sizes larger than 1 inch. In this case the use of 4-in mold is no longer...

Mechanical and microstructural properties of cement paste incorporating nano silica particles with various specific surface areas

    , Article Key Engineering Materials, 8 July 2010 through 9 July 2010 ; Volume 478 , July , 2011 , Pages 19-24 ; 10139826 (ISSN) ; 9783037851357 (ISBN) Khaloo, A. R ; Vayghan, A. G ; Bolhasani, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this study, the effect of agglomeration and non-uniform dispersion of silica particles on the mechanical and microstructural properties of cement paste incorporating silica fume and nanosilica (NS) with various specific surface areas (SSA) is experimentally investigated. The SSA and replacement percent of silica particles were considered as test variables and four series of mixes were made including one set of mixes for silica fume with a SSA of 20 m2/g and three sets of mixes for three different types of NS with SSA equal to 90, 200 and 380 m2/g. In each series of mix designs three different cement replacement percents of 1.5%, 3% and 5% were applied. The results indicate that as the SSA...

Estimation of the Compressive Strength of GGBFS based Alkali-Activated Concrete

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jafari, Alireza (Author) ; Toufigh, Vahab (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) based alkali-activated concrete (GAAC) is one of the eco-friendly alternatives of traditional concrete, which uses industrial byproducts instead of ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Besides environmental benefits, substituting OPC concrete with GAAC has some economic advantages, while it successfully meets the concrete structural requirements in both mechanical and durability characteristics. Despite this fact, employing GAAC in the construction industry has been limited due to a lack of standard mix design code. This study aims to develop an accurate prediction model for the compressive strength of GAAC by employing the most appropriate machine...

On the parameters influencing chemo-physical properties of rice husk ash and its performance in cement mortars

    , Article Proceedings, Annual Conference - Canadian Society for Civil Engineering ; Volume 2 , 2011 , Pages 1248-1255 ; 9781618392183 (ISBN) Gholizadeh, A ; Khaloo, A. R ; Nasir, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
One of the most conventional and energy efficient methods to improve the engineering properties of concrete is the utilization of waste materials and by-products. Among agricultural wastes, rice husk ash (RHA) has exhibited the greatest potential to enhance the characteristics of cement mixtures. However, the investigations on the properties and performance of RHA are slim compared to its potential advantages and few systematic studies can be found in the literature regarding parameters influencing the chemo-physical and microstructural characteristics of RHA along with its performance in cement mixtures. In this study, the effect of retention time of rice husk is systematically...

Properties of concrete containing Guar gum

, Article European Journal of Environmental and Civil Engineering ; 2020 Radvand, T ; Toufigh, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    Taylor and Francis Ltd  2020
    Abstract
This study explores the effect of Guar gum as an eco-friendly additive on concrete mechanical characteristics. In the first stage, the slump and relative humidity tests were carried out for the fresh mortar, and tensile and compressive strengths were then determined for fifteen different mixture designs with two different curing times. Further, an exponential correlation was obtained between the ultrasonic pulse velocity and the compression test results. Additionally, scanning electron microscope (SEM) was employed to assess the bond between aggregates and Guar gum. At last, the Taguchi method and ANOVA were utilized to conduct the optimum states of the mechanical characteristics of the...

Cementitious mortars containing pozzolana under elevated temperatures

    , Article Structural Concrete ; Volume 23, Issue 5 , 2022 , Pages 3294-3312 ; 14644177 (ISSN) Toufigh, V ; Pachideh, G ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In recent years, pozzolana are being increasingly used in different types of concretes and mortars. This investigation aims to evaluate the effect of replacing 7, 14, 21, and 28% cement (by weight) with silica fume (SF), granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS), zeolite, and fly ash (FA) under elevated temperatures. Forty mix designs were built with various water-to-cement ratios and plasticizers. Three hundred and six specimens were prepared, and the flexural, uniaxial compression and tensile tests were performed on specimens after exposure to elevated temperatures between 25°C and 900°C. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) test was then performed on the two series of specimens. Accordingly, the...

Roller compacted concrete pavements reinforced with steel and polypropylene fibers

    , Article Structural Engineering and Mechanics ; Volume 40, Issue 2 , 2011 , Pages 149-165 ; 12254568 (ISSN) Madhkhan, M ; Azizkhani, R ; Torki, M. E ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this paper, the effects of both pozzolans and (steel and poly-propylene) fibers on the mechanical properties of roller compacted concrete are studied. Specimens for the experiments were made using a soil-based approach; thus, the Kango's vibration hammer was used for compaction. The tests in the first stage were carried out to determine the optimal moisture requirements for mix designs using cubic 150 × 150 × 150 mm specimens. In the tests of the second stage, the mechanical behaviors of the main specimens made using the optimal moisture obtained in the previous stage were evaluated using 28, 90, and 210 day cubic specimens. The mechanical properties of RCC pavements were evaluated using...
