    Abstract
Modeling of hybrid systems using mixed logical dynamical (MLD) systems is an art. The MLD framework often introduces numerous constraints and auxiliary binary and continuous variables, which, in turn, increase the computational complexity of the optimization problems. This paper presents an automaton-based realization for discrete-time hybrid automaton (DHA) with both controlled and uncontrolled switching phenomena by which it is attempted to develop efficient translation techniques to MLD systems and reduce the total number of decision variables in the MLD model. Based on this DHA model, a modified version of MLD systems, which is called extended MLD (EMLD) is formally defined and...

Hybrid modeling and control of a DC-DC boost converter via Extended Mixed Logical Dynamical systems (EMLDs)

, Article PEDSTC 2014 - 5th Annual International Power Electronics, Drive Systems and Technologies Conference ; 2014 , pp. 373-378 Hejri, M ; Mokhtari, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The objective of this paper is to expand the concept of hybrid modeling and control in power electronics area. A new precise and non-averaged model of a DC-DC boost converter is developed on the basis of Mixed Logical Dynamical (MLD) systems, and the approach is extended by a new version of such systems which is called as Extended Mixed Logical Dynamical (EMLD) systems in this paper. A Model Predictive Controller (MPC) based on the Mixed Integer Quadratic Programming (MIQP) is designed for the MLD and EMLD models of the DC-DC boost converter considering all possible dynamics in Continuous and Discontinuous Conduction Modes of operations (CCM-DCM). The simulation results show the satisfactory...

Control of droplet detachment frequency in a GMAW process by a hybrid model predictive control

    Abstract
Efficient control of a gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process enables one to obtain high quality products as a consequence of achieving a high quality weld. Although control of the droplet detachment frequency in the welding process would play a great role in improving the welding quality, measuring this variable is difficult and expensive. In this paper, we attempt to control the frequency of droplet detachments without directly measuring it. To this end, we utilize the hybrid property of the GMAW process to indirectly control the frequency. Specifically, a mixed logical dynamical (MLD) model is obtained by considering the hybrid act of the process during droplet detachment. Then, a nonlinear...

Global hybrid modeling and control of a buck converter: a novel concept

    Abstract
Several attempts have been made to design suitable controllers for DC-DC converters. However, these designs suffer from model inaccuracy or their inability to desirably function in both continuous and discontinuous current modes. This paper presents a novel switching scheme based on hybrid modeling to control a buck converter using mixed logical dynamical (MLD) methodologies. The proposed method is capable of globally controlling the converter in both continuous and discontinuous current modes of operation by considering all constraints in the physical plant such as maximum inductor current and capacitor voltage limits. Different loads and input voltage disturbances are simulated in MATLAB...

Hybrid predictive control of a DC-DC boost converter in both continuous and discontinuous current modes of operation

    , Article Optimal Control Applications and Methods ; Volume 32, Issue 3 , 2011 , Pages 270-284 ; 01432087 (ISSN) Hejri, M ; Mokhtari, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Developing efficient and appropriate modeling and control techniques for DC-DC converters is of major importance in power electronics area and has attracted much attention from automatic control theory. Since DC-DC converters have a complex hybrid nature, recently several techniques based on hybrid modeling and control have been introduced. These techniques have shown better results as compared with conventional averaging-based schemes with limited modeling and control abilities. But the current works in this field have not considered all possible dynamics of the converters in both continuous and discontinuous current modes (CCM, DCM) of operations. These dynamics are results of controlled...
