    Abstract
Central composite orthogonal design was applied to quantify relations of xylanase production, loss of dry matter and change of pH with four critical variables during solid state fermentation of a mixture of wheat bran and wheat straw on which Aspergillus niger CCUG 33991 was cultivated. The studied variables included the percentage of wheat straw, wheat bran, temperature, moisture content, and fermentation time. The second-order quadratic model predicted the xylanase activity at a suitable set of conditions namely 29°C, 55% moisture content, and 50 hours of fermentation to be 1465 U/g of fermented dry matter which differed less than 6% from measured value at this set of conditions....

    Abstract
The effect of moisture on Shengli lignite breakage behavior and energy efficiency was studied experimentally using a standard Hardgrove mill fitted with a wattmeter. The grinding process concerned both the inputs, namely the occurrence and content of water and instantaneous energy consumption and the outputs, size-reduction and product fineness. Results show that the energy-size reduction process for grinding lignite is markedly influenced by moisture occurrence and content. Removing surface moisture from 37.90% to 16.61% (the air-dried condition) resulted in a slight increase of input energy by 0.04 kWh.t−1 per 10 s. However, with further drying inherent moisture to 0%, the consumed energy...

    Abstract
An experimental study is conducted to measure small-strain shear modulus of clay-cement mixture using bender element apparatus setup in a triaxial cell. Bender element tests were conducted on cement-treated soils and the results were analyzed to study the variation of shear modulus properties of soil specimens at different cement contents, confining pressures, curing times, and compaction moisture contents. Based on the obtained results increasing the cement ratio has a significant effect on the small-strain shear modulus of the treated soils, and this effect signifies with increasing the moisture content and curing time. Rates of shear modulus enhancements due to cement content, curing...

    Abstract
During drying processes, moisture control of food products, such as dried tea, is of great importance. Improving dryer control, results in consistent production and reduction of energy consumption. However, the dryer is a complex system associated with model uncertainties. In this paper, a realistic uncertain model of a fluidized tea bed dryer is considered. Moisture content and temperature of tea leaves (or other products) are controlled at desired values by manipulating tea leaves heating rate. Developing a code by Robust Control Toolbox of MATLAB and modeling uncertainties, a robust controller is designed based on ′-synthesis with DK-iteration algorithm. Results show that in the presence...

Experimental study and thermodynamic modeling for determining the effect of non-polar solvent (hexane)/polar solvent (methanol) ratio and moisture content on the lipid extraction efficiency from Chlorella vulgaris

    , Article Bioresource Technology ; Volume 201 , 2016 , Pages 304-311 ; 09608524 (ISSN) Malekzadeh, M ; Abedini Najafabadi, H ; Hakim, M ; Feilizadeh, M ; Vossoughi, M ; Rashtchian, D ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this research, organic solvent composed of hexane and methanol was used for lipid extraction from dry and wet biomass of Chlorella vulgaris. The results indicated that lipid and fatty acid extraction yield was decreased by increasing the moisture content of biomass. However, the maximum extraction efficiency was attained by applying equivolume mixture of hexane and methanol for both dry and wet biomass. Thermodynamic modeling was employed to estimate the effect of hexane/methanol ratio and moisture content on fatty acid extraction yield. Hansen solubility parameter was used in adjusting the interaction parameters of the model, which led to decrease the number of tuning parameters from 6...

Moisture diffusivity and shrinkage of broad beans during bulk drying in an inert medium fluidized bed dryer assisted by dielectric heating

    , Article Journal of Food Engineering ; Volume 92, Issue 3 , 2009 , Pages 331-338 ; 02608774 (ISSN) Hashemi, G ; Mowla, D ; Kazemeini, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Drying behavior of broad beans (Vicia faba) was studied in a pilot scaled fluidized bed dryer with inert particles assisted by dielectric heating. The effective diffusion coefficient of moisture transfer was determined by Fickian method at four different air drying temperatures of 35, 45, 55 and 65 °C. Correlations for moisture diffusivity as a function of moisture content and temperature of the drying medium were developed. The values of moisture diffusivity were obtained within the range of 1.27 × 10-9-6.48 × 10-9 m2/s and the activation energies for FBD and FBD + DE were found to be 27.71 and 17.10 kJ/mol, respectively. The shrinkage behavior of the broad beans was also investigated by...

Matrix effects corrections in prompt gamma-ray spectra of a PGNAA online analyzer system using artificial neural network

    , Article Progress in Nuclear Energy ; Volume 118 , 2020 Shahabinejad, H ; Vosoughi, N ; Saheli, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
One of the well-known online monitoring techniques used for quality control of bulk samples is Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA). PGNAA suffers from the so-called matrix effect problems such as density, thickness and moisture content of the sample under study. In this work, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model is introduced to deal with these effects. The required spectra for training and testing the proposed ANN model are obtained by Monte Carlo simulation of the gamma-ray spectra recorded in a PGNAA online analyzer system used in cement factories. The gamma-ray spectra related to given set of density, thickness and moisture content are corrected channel-to-channel using...

Determination of a suitable thin layer drying curve model for saffron (Crocus sativus L) stigmas in an infrared dryer

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 18, Issue 6 , 2011 , Pages 1397-1401 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Akhondi, E ; Kazemi, A ; Maghsoodi, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The drying of saffron stigma was investigated in a laboratory infrared dryer. The effect of temperature on the drying rate of samples at various temperatures (60,70...110 °C) was studied. The drying time decreased with an increase in drying air temperature. The constant-rate period is absent from the drying curve. The drying of saffron occurred in the falling rate period. Four, thin-layer drying models, namely, Lewis, Handerson and Pabis, Page, and Midilli and Kucuk, were fitted to drying data. The performance of these models was investigated by comparing the determination of coefficient ( R2) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) between the observed and predicted moisture ratios. Among these...

Analyzing transient heat and moisture transport surrounding a heat source in unsaturated porous media using the Green's function

    , Article Geothermics ; Volume 81 , 2019 , Pages 224-234 ; 03756505 (ISSN) Yazdani Cherati, D ; Ghasemi Fare, O ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2019
    Abstract
Generally, in most areas, groundwater level is deep and heat sources (e.g., energy piles)are embedded in unsaturated soil media. Therefore, in order to accurately analyze the soil response close to heat sources, both heat and moisture transport in unsaturated soil domain should be considered. Thermal loading changes the moisture content in the porous media. In this study, the energy conservation and mass fluid continuity equations derived from hydrothermal analysis of a partially saturated soil medium are considered in cylindrical coordinate system. To make the analytical solution possible, partial differential equations (PDEs)are turned into ordinary differential equations (ODEs), through...

An improved Kalman filtering approach for the estimation of unsaturated flow parameters by assimilating photographic imaging data

    Abstract
As a non-invasive method, photographic imaging techniques offer some interesting potentials for characterization of soil moisture content in unsaturated porous media, enabling mapping at very fine resolutions in both space and time. Although less explored, the wealth of soil moisture data provided by photographic imaging is also appealing for the estimation of unsaturated soil hydraulic parameters through inverse modeling. However, imaging data have some unique characteristics, including high susceptibility to noise, which can negatively affect the parameter estimation process. In this study a sequential data assimilation approach is developed to simultaneously update soil moisture content...
