Effect of Hydrated Lime on Performance Properties of Hot Mix Asphalt

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nabizadeh Shahri, Hadi (Author) ; Tabatabaee, Nader (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Hydrated lime has been used as an anti-stripping agent with acceptable performance. Numorous studies have been conducted to evaluate hydrated lime as an anti-stripping agent, however effect of hydrated lime on performance properties of asphalt mixture has not been fully addressed. In the present study, the effect of hydrated lime was investigated. In this study, three methods of adding hydrated lime were evaluated. These methods consist of a) adding dry hydrated lime to dry aggregates, b) adding hydrated lime to the binder to form mastic, and c) adding slurry lime to dry aggregates.
More uniform distribution of hydrated lime on aggregate surface in the slurry method improved performance...

Investigating Different Crumb Rubber Modification Methods in Cold Mix Asphalts

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Daneshvar, Dana (Author) ; Motamed, Arash (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Studies have shown that use of crumb rubber additive can improve the mechanical and performance properties of hot mix asphalts. Nowadays, different methods are used for adding crumb rubber to asphalt mixtures. However, no comprehensive research has been done to investigate the effects of these different methods in cold mix asphalts. In this research, different crumb rubber modification methods were evaluated to compare their effects on cold mix asphalts’ performance. In this regard, various crumb rubber modification methods, such as pre blending crumb rubber into the asphalt before emulsification, post blending crumb rubber into the prepared asphalt emulsion and blending crumb rubber with...

Evaluation of Warm Mix Asphalt containing Sasobit

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Naderi, Behzad (Author) ; Tabatabaee, Nader (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Warm mix asphalt has received considerable attention over the past decade particularly due to its potential environmental benefit such as lower energy consumption and emission, its ability to be placed at lower ambient temperatures making it a suitable material for areas with short construction season. There are three warm mix asphalt (WMA) techniques are available; organic additive, foaming, and chemical additive. This study examined Sasobit, a micro crystalline wax which is an organic additive. The concentrations tested were 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 percent of the base binder. A PG 64-22 asphalt binder from an Iranian refinery (Tehran refinery) was used as the base binder. Superpave binder...

Characterization of RAP Binder and Warm Mix Asphalt Containing High RAP Percentage and Crumb Rubber

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Morsali, Atefeh (Author) ; Tabatabaei, Nader (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Increased environmental concerns and high oil prices have encouraged highway agencies to maximize the use of recycled materials like Reclaimed Asphalt Pavements (RAP) in pavement construction. However, utilization of RAP has limited to low percentage, generally less than 25%. This is due aged, stiffer, and less strain tolerant asphalt binder in RAP. As the RAP proportion increases, a large amount of the aged binder will be introduced into the mixture. The excessive stiffness of HMA mixture tends to lead to less workable mixture. Studies were conducted to examine the effect of Sasobit on the workablility of high RAP mixtures. The results indicated while the utilization of Sasobit had improved...

Rutting and moisture resistance evaluation of polyethylene wax–modified asphalt mixtures

    Abstract
One of the methods newly introduced in pavement technology to address environmental concerns and reduce total gas emission is warm mix asphalt (WMA) technology. In this study, polyethylene wax is used to produce WMA mixtures. Although this technology has several positive features, moisture and rutting resistance of WMA mixtures are always questionable. To evaluate moisture and rutting resistance of polyethylene-modified mixtures, indirect tensile strength and dynamic creep tests were used, respectively. Results indicated that polyethylene has positive effect at low compaction temperature on moisture resistance, and also has negative effect on rutting resistance

Improving fracture and moisture resistance of cold mix asphalt (CMA) using crumb rubber and cement

    , Article Road Materials and Pavement Design ; 2020 Daneshvar, D ; Motamed, A ; Imaninasab, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Due to environmental and economic advantages, cold mix asphalt (CMA) can be considered as a good alternative to conventional hot mix asphalt (HMA). Nevertheless, it has inferior performance compared to HMA, so that the application of CMA is not recommended in the surface layer of pavements subjected to high traffic volume and/or regions with very cold or hot climate. Considering the high potential of distress occurring in the CMAs, this research is aimed at investigating the effect of crumb rubber (CR) on fracture and moisture damage resistance of the CMAs. Different CR percentages were applied through two different modification methods and, then by means of Semi-Circular Bending (SCB) test,...

Effects of moisture on warm mix asphalt containing Sasobit

    Abstract
The asphalt industry has been at the forefront of sustainable development. Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) has been developed to cope with issues such as high energy prices and air pollution. These mixes require less energy and generate fewer pollutants during production in comparison with conventional Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA). Although a promising technology, the durability of WMA is not clear because long-term WMA field performance data is limited. This study investigated the susceptibility of Sasobit-modified WMA to moisture, since moisture damage is a major cause of premature pavement failure in asphalt concrete. To this end, WMA samples were made using different concentrations of Sasobit and the...
