    Effects of ion-exchange and hydrolysis mechanisms on lead silicate glass corrosion

    Abstract
    Corrosion of lead silicate glass (LSG) contacting 0.5 M aqueous nitric acid (HNO 3) was investigated via scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma analysis, and weight-loss measurement to determine the respective contributions of the ion-exchange vs. the hydrolysis reactions. The LSG having X M ≡ Pb+K+Na/Si mole ratios of less than 0.7 showed very little weight loss with no Si network deterioration. At X M > 0.7, the mechanism changed into the hydrolysis, which caused the formation of a networkless gel layer resting at the solid/liquid interface.     Abstract
    Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were synthesized in aqueous solutions containing FeCl2, FeCl3, FeSO4 and Fe2(SO4) 3. The effects of iron charge and the counter ions on the formation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were investigated. Thermogravimetric (TG) analysis indicated that carbon multilayer structures including CNTs and multishell graphite particles were formed in deionized (DI) water without the iron precursor. SWCNTs were also synthesized in the presence of the iron ions. It was also found that the mole ratio of [Fe2+]/[Fe3+] in the solution has a significant influence on the purity of CNTs and the process yield. The highest yield was...

    Abstract
    Temperature-sensitive hydrogels based on N-t-butylacrylamide (TBA), acrylamide (AAm), and sodium alginate were prepared by free radical polymerization method. Methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) and amonium persulfate (APS) were applied as water soluble crosslinker and initiator, respectively. The chemical structure of the hydrogels was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TCA) methods. Morphology of the samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). By changing the initial TBA/AAm mole ratios, hydrogels with different swelling properties were obtained.     Abstract
    The performance of nanoparticles for biomedical applications is often assessed by their narrow size distribution, suitable magnetic saturation and low toxicity effects. In this work, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) with different size, shape and saturation magnetization levels were synthesized via a co-precipitation technique using ferrous salts with a Fe3+/Fe2+ mole ratio equal to 2. A parametric study is conducted, based on a uniform design-of-experiments methodology and a critical polymer/iron mass ratio (r-ratio) for obtaining SPION with narrow size distribution, suitable magnetic saturation, and optimum biocompatibility is identified.
