Novel modified starch-xanthan gum hydrogels for controlled drug delivery: Synthesis and characterization

    , Article Carbohydrate Polymers ; Volume 79, Issue 4 , 2010 , Pages 898-907 ; 01448617 (ISSN) Shalviri, A ; Liu, Q ; Abdekhodaie, M. J ; Wu, X. Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This work was intended to develop a new cross-linked gelatinized starch-xanthan gum hydrogel system, to characterize the properties of the new material, and to explore its potential applications in controlled drug delivery. Cross-linked starch-xanthan gum polymers were synthesized with varying levels of xanthan gum and sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP). The reaction of starch-xanthan gum polymers with STMP was examined using solid 31P NMR spectroscopy and FTIR. Morphology of the films made from the new polymers was studied by scanning electron microscopy. The swelling properties and the network parameters such as gel mesh size of the films were investigated. The permeation of solutes with...

Simulation of DNA electrophoresis through microstructures

    Abstract
The dependence of the mobility of DNA molecules through an hexagonal array of micropillars on their length and the applied electric field was investigated and it was found that mobility is a nonmonotonic function of their length. Results also revealed that the size dependence of the DNA mobility depends on the applied electric field and there is a crossover around E ≈ 25 V/cm for the mobility of λ-DNA and T4-DNA. These observations are explained in terms of the diffusion process inside the structure affected by the solvent and are modeled using the Langevin and its corresponding Fokker-Planck equations. The phenomenon is generalized under three regimes in a phase diagram relating the...

Stability of titania nano-particles in different alcohols

    , Article Ceramics International ; Volume 38, Issue 5 , 2012 , Pages 3893-3900 ; 02728842 (ISSN) Farrokhi Rad, M ; Ghorbani, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The alcoholic suspensions of titania nano-particles were prepared using the methanol, ethanol, isopropanol and butanol as the solvents as well as triethanolamine (TEA) as an dispersant. The colloidal stability of suspensions, both in the absence as well as presence of TEA, was studied by measuring the zeta potential, sedimentation, pH and electrical conductivity of suspensions, dispersant adsorption and particles size distribution. Results showed that in the absence of TEA, the stability of the suspensions increases with the molecular size of alcohol (from methanol to butanol), while the zeta potential decreases. It was also observed that with the addition of TEA up to the optimum dosage (4...

Artificial neural network modeling of peptide mobility and peptide mapping in capillary zone electrophoresis

    Abstract
Recently, we have developed an artificial neural network model, which was able to predict accurately the electrophoretic mobilities of relatively small peptides. To examine the robustness of this methodology, a 3-3-1 back-propagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN) model was developed using the same inputs as the previous model, which were the Offord's charge over mass term (Q/M2/3), corrected steric substituent constant (E s,c) and molar refractivity (MR). The data set consisted of 102 peptides with a larger range of size than that of our earlier report - up to 42 amino acid residues as compared to 13 amino acids in the initial study - that also included highly charged and hydrophobic...

Improvement in CO2/H2 separation by fabrication of poly(ether-b-amide6)/glycerol triacetate gel membranes

    , Article Journal of Membrane Science ; Vol. 469, issue , 2014 , pp. 43-58 ; ISSN: 03767388 Rabiee, H ; Soltanieh, M ; Mousavi, S. A ; Ghadimi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate separation performance of poly(ether-b-amide6) (Pebax1657)/glycerol triacetate (GTA) gel membranes for CO2 removal from H2, N2 and CH4. GTA as a low molecular weight and highly CO2-phill compound was added to membrane structure at various weight fractions, 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% of Pebax, to fabricate a new high solubility selective membrane with improved performance. Permeation of pure gases was studied at different temperatures from 25 to 65°C and pressures from 4 to 24bar and ideal selectivities were calculated. Results indicated enhancement in permeation for all tested gases. For example, at a pressure of 4bar and a temperature of 25°C, membrane...

Novel nano-porous hydrogel as a carrier matrix for oral delivery of tetracycline hydrochloride

    , Article Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects ; Volume 392, Issue 1 , December , 2011 , Pages 16-24 ; 09277757 (ISSN) Bardajee, G. R ; Pourjavadi, A ; Soleyman, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A novel nano-porous hydrogel (NPH) was synthesized via graft copolymerization of sodium acrylate (Na-AA) and acrylamide (AAm) onto salep backbones and its application as a carrier matrix for oral delivery of tetracycline hydrochloride (TH) was investigated. The Taguchi method as a strong experimental design tool was used for synthesis optimization. The swelling behavior of optimum hydrogel was measured in various media. The hydrogel formation was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermogravimetrical analysis (TGA). The study of the surface morphology of the hydrogels using SEM and AFM showed a nanoporous (average pore size: 180. nm) structure for the sample...

The use of ladder particle swarm optimisation for quantitative structure-activity relationship analysis of human immunodeficiency virus-1 integrase inhibitors

    , Article Molecular Simulation ; Volume 37, Issue 15 , 2011 , Pages 1221-1233 ; 08927022 (ISSN) Jalali Heravi, M ; Ebrahimi-Najafabadi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This contribution focuses on the use of ladder particle swarm optimisation (LPSO) on modelling of oxadiazole- and triazolesubstituted naphthyridines as human immunodeficiency virus-1 integrase inhibitors. Artificial neural network (ANN) and Monte Carlo cross-validation techniques were combined with LPSO to develop a quantitative structure-activity relationship model. The techniques of LPSO, ANN and sample set partitioning based on joint x-y distances were applied as feature selection, mapping and model evaluation, respectively. The variables selected by LPSO were used as inputs of Bayesian regularisation ANN. The statistical parameters of correlation of deterministic, R2, and...
