    Abstract
Due to various applications of human motion capture techniques, developing low-cost methods that would be applicable in nonlaboratory environments is under consideration. MEMS inertial sensors and Kinect are two low-cost devices that can be utilized in home-based motion capture systems, e.g., home-based rehabilitation. In this work, an unscented Kalman filter approach was developed based on the complementary properties of Kinect and the inertial sensors to fuse the orientation data of these two devices for human arm motion tracking during both stationary shoulder joint position and human body movement. A new measurement model of the fusion algorithm was obtained that can compensate for the...

    Abstract
Human motion tracking has many applications in biomedical and industrial services. Low-cost inertial/magnetic sensors are widely used in human motion capture systems to obtain the orientation of the human body segments. In this paper, we have presented a quaternion-based unscented Kalman filter algorithm to fuse inertial/magnetic sensors measurements for tracking human arm movements. In order to have a better estimation of the orientation of the forearm and the upper arm, a constraint equation was developed based on the relative velocity of the elbow joint with respect to the inertial sensors attached to the forearm and the upper arm. Also to compensate for fast body motions, we adapted the...

    Abstract
Motion capture systems are used to gauge the kinematic features of the motion in numerous fields of research. Despite superb accuracy performance, the commercial systems are costly and difficult to use. To solve these issues, Kinect has been proposed as a low-priced markerless motion capture sensor, and its accuracy has been assessed using previous motion capture systems. However, in many of these studies, the anatomical joint angles captured using the Kinect are compared to the 3D rotation angles reported by the gold standard motion capture systems. These incompatibilities in the determination of the human joint angles can lead to higher error estimation. To accomplish a valid accuracy...

    Multihypothesis compressed video sensing technique

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology ; Volume 26, Issue 4 , 2016 , Pages 627-635 ; 10518215 (ISSN) Azghani, M ; Karimi, M ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we present a compressive sampling and multihypothesis (MH) reconstruction strategy for video sequences that has a rather simple encoder, while the decoding system is not that complex. We introduce a convex cost function that incorporates the MH technique with the sparsity constraint and the Tikhonov regularization. Consequently, we derive a new iterative algorithm based on these criteria. This algorithm surpasses its counterparts (Elasticnet and Tikhonov) in recovery performance. Besides, it is computationally much faster than Elasticnet and comparable with Tikhonov. Our extensive simulation results confirm these claims

Motion type analysis of a piezoelectric-actuated vibratory micro-robot in hybrid stick-slip-jump mode

    , Article Journal of Sound and Vibration ; Volume 436 , 2018 , Pages 81-94 ; 0022460X (ISSN) Jalili, H ; Salarieh, H ; Vossoughi, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Academic Press  2018
    Abstract
In this paper, the stick-slip-jump motion of a micro-robot with two perpendicular vibratory actuators is studied. A practical model of this micro-robot is designed and fabricated with two Langevin type piezoelectric actuators, which are driven by harmonic voltages. Depending on the amplitude and frequency of the driving voltages of the micro-robot actuators, as well as their phase difference, the type of the motion dynamics and the states of the contact points in the motion (slipping or jumping) are determined. Considering the conditions of the contact points of the micro-robot, the motion is based on the combination of the friction drive principle (stick-slip) and jumping phenomenon. A...

    , Article 5th RSI International Conference on Robotics and Mechatronics, IcRoM 2017, 25 October 2017 through 27 October 2017 ; 2018 , Pages 445-450 ; 9781538657034 (ISBN) Rahmati, Z ; Behzadipour, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Design, implementation and experimental evaluation of a classic PID, and a modern Generalized Predictive Control (GPC) for an off-pump heart tracking system were carried out. Following the design and simulation analysis of the controllers, experimental evaluation was conducted on the slave robot of SINA tele-operational surgical system. Results revealed that considering the volatile high-frequency/speed pattern of heart motion, the agility of the controlled system is the most influential factor on its performance. With this in mind, unlike the Ziegler-Nichols-based tuned PID with emphasis on steady-state condition, the PID control with more transient behavior showed a superior performance....

    Abstract
The problem of motion detection has received considerable attention due to the explosive growth of its applications in video analysis and surveillance systems. While the previous approaches can produce good results, the accurate detection of motion remains a challenging task due to the difficulties raised by illumination variations, occlusion, camouflage, sudden motions appearing in burst, dynamic texture, and environmental changes such as weather conditions, sunlight changes during a day, and so on. In this paper, a novel per-pixel motion descriptor is proposed for motion detection in video sequences which outperforms the current methods in the literature particularly in severe scenarios....

    Abstract
Micro-scale systems have gained considerable attention in recent years and a large amount of researches have been done in this field. In this study, the hydrodynamic interference of a droplet is comprehensively investigated under surface acoustic waves. This paper reveals the effects of some control parameters such as wave amplitude and wave frequency on the dynamical behavior of droplet. For these purposes, a two-dimensional multiple-relaxation-time color-gradient model lattice Boltzmann method is developed. This model is first validated by dynamical behaviors of a droplet subjected to shear flow. Moreover, displacement of a droplet affected by surface acoustic waves is comprehensively...

    Motion CAPTCHA

    Abstract
In some websites it is necessary to distinguish between human users and computer programs which is known as CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Human Apart). CAPTCHA methods are mainly based on the weaknesses of OCR systems while using them are undesirable to human users. In this paper a new CAPTCHA method is introduced on the basis of showing a movie of a person's action. Then we ask the user to describe the movement of that person. The user should select the sentence which describes the motion from a list of sentences. If the user chooses the right sentence we can guess that the user is a human and not a computer program. The main advantage of this method...

    Abstract
In this paper a complete design of a high speed optical motion analyzer system has been described. The main core of the image processing unit has been implemented by the differential algorithm procedure. Some intelligent and conservative procedures that facilitate the search algorithm have also been proposed and implemented for the processing of human motions. Moreover, an optimized modified direct linear transformation (MDLT) method has been used to reconstruct 3D markers positions which are used for deriving kinematic characteristics of the motion. Consequently, a set of complete tests using some simple mechanical devices were conducted to verify the system outputs. Considering the system...

Coupled artificial neural networks to estimate 3D whole-body posture, lumbosacral moments, and spinal loads during load-handling activities

    , Article Journal of Biomechanics ; Volume 102 , 2020 Aghazadeh, F ; Arjmand, N ; Nasrabadi, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Biomechanical modeling approaches require body posture to evaluate the risk of spine injury during manual material handling. The procedure to measure body posture via motion-analysis techniques as well as the subsequent calculations of lumbosacral moments and spine loads by, respectively, inverse-dynamic and musculoskeletal models are complex and time-consuming. We aim to develop easy-to-use yet accurate artificial neural networks (ANNs) that predict 3D whole-body posture (ANNposture), segmental orientations (ANNangle), and lumbosacral moments (ANNmoment) based on our measurements during load-handling activities. Fifteen individuals each performed 135 load-handling activities by reaching (0...

Marker-less versus marker-based driven musculoskeletal models of the spine during static load-handling activities

    , Article Journal of Biomechanics ; Volume 112 , 2020 Asadi, F ; Arjmand, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Evaluation of workers’ body posture in workstations is a prerequisite to estimate spinal loads and assess risk of injury for the subsequent design of preventive interventions. The Microsoft Kinect™ sensor is, in this regard, advantageous over the traditional skin-marker-based optical motion capture systems for being marker-less, portable, cost-effective, and easy-to-use in real workplaces. While several studies have demonstrated the validity/reliability of the Kinect for posture measurements especially during gait trials, its capability to adequately drive a detailed spine musculoskeletal model for injury risk assessments remains to be investigated. Lumbosacral (L5-S1) load predictions of a...

    , Article Computers in Biology and Medicine ; Volume 40, Issue 1 , 2010 , Pages 21-28 ; 00104825 (ISSN) Eslami, A ; Jahed, M ; Preusser, T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper a variational framework for joint segmentation and motion estimation is employed for inspecting heart in Cine MRI sequences. A functional including Mumford-Shah segmentation and optical flow based dense motion estimation is approximated using the phase-field technique. Exploiting calculus of variation principles, multiple partial differential equations associated with the Euler-Lagrange equations of the functional are extracted, first. Next, the finite element method is used to discretize the resulting PDEs for numerical solution. Several...
