    Experimental investigation of instability of fluid mud layer under surface wave motion

    Abstract
    Motivated by environmental impacts of surface-wave induced mixing of fluid mud with clear water in nearshore areas, this paper presents quantitative measurements of excitation of interfacial waves over a bed mud layer by a surface wave in a wave flume. After an initial fluidization process, a quasi-standing interfacial wave comprised of four interfacial waves was observed at the interface as a result of a resonant wave interaction with the surface wave. The interfacial waves were subharmonic to the surface wave and traveled at the maximum possible angle from it.     Abstract
    Red mud (RM) is generated as a by-product during the production of alumina from bauxite ore. In this study, RM packing in a column is used as a catalyst for carbon–carbon double bond formation via Knoevenagel condensation. The reactants are added to the top of the column and then eluted with solvent. The products are collected in high yields and short time. RM packed in a column eliminates a catalyst separation step from the reaction mixture in this work. © 2007 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC

    Rapid gas kick detection is an essential tool in safe well control operation. Gas kick can be defined as the uncontrolled release of gas from the formation into the wellbore due to insufficient hydrostatic pressure of the drilling mud.     Motivated by the role of interfacial instabilities in sediment resuspension, this paper provides quantitative measurements of the long-time behavior of the interfacial waves and the changes in vertical density during motion of a surface wave over a muddy bed. After an initial fluidization process, a 3D quasi-standing interfacial wave was observed at the interface as a result of a resonant wave interaction with the surface wave. Properties investigation of prepared samples revealed that radiation prepared samples show higher yield and swelling ratios in comparison with the heating prepared ones.
