Solving a new mixed integer non-linear programming model of the multi-skilled project scheduling problem considering learning and forgetting effect on the employee efficiency

    , Article IEEE International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management ; 18 November , 2014 , Pages 400-404 ; ISSN: 21573611 ; ISBN: 9781479909865 Mehmanchi, E ; Shadrokh, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we propose a new mathematical programming model to tackle the multi-skilled project scheduling problem. Considering the effect of learning and forgetting on the human skills, an exponential learning function has been developed by assuming the efficiency of employees performing activities to be dynamic. Taking the nonlinearity of the function into account, we use separable programming to acquire an appropriate linear approximation for it. Moreover, the proposed model allows us to relax some of the binary variables linearly without any modifications. At the end, the final model is tested with some instances and is solved by CPLEX in order to confirm the implemented...

    Abstract
Satisfying the clients' uncompromising priorities is a challenge for decision makers of organizations that face multiple projects. This paper considers an organization with a multi-skilled workforce working on several predetermined projects under time-of-use energy tariffs where distributed load energy usage is the primary concern of energy suppliers. This paper also considers different time-of-use energy tariffs, which are among the most common strategies to reach a more balanced energy utilization. The problem is stated as a bi-objective mixed-integer programming model containing two conflicting objectives; to minimize the total cost of the multi-skilled workforce and obtain a sustainable...

A multi-objective invasive weeds optimization algorithm for solving multi-skill multi-mode resource constrained project scheduling problem

    , Article Computers and Chemical Engineering ; Volume 88 , 2016 , Pages 157-169 ; 00981354 (ISSN) Maghsoudlou, H ; Afshar Nadjafi, B ; Akhavan Niaki, S. T ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A new multi-skill multi-mode resource constrained project scheduling problem with three objectives is studied in this paper. The objectives are: (1) minimizing project's makespan, (2) minimizing total cost of allocating workers to skills, and (3) maximizing total quality of processing activities. A meta-heuristic algorithm called multi-objective invasive weeds optimization algorithm (MOIWO) with a new chromosome structure guaranteeing feasibility of solutions is developed to solve the proposed problem. Two other meta-heuristic algorithms called non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) and multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm (MOPSO) are used to validate the...

Preemptive multi-skilled resource investment project scheduling problem: mathematical modelling and solution approaches

    , Article Computers and Chemical Engineering ; Volume 96 , 2017 , Pages 55-68 ; 00981354 (ISSN) Javanmard, S ; Afshar Nadjafi, B ; Akhavan Niaki, S. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Many chemical production systems encounter with a functionally flexible workplace which need multi-skilled workers. This research integrates the multi-skilled project scheduling problem with the resource investment problem which aims to obtain concurrent optimal policy of project scheduling and skills’ recruitment. The objective of the proposed model is minimization of total recruitment cost for different levels of the skills. An integer programming formulation is developed for the problem, and it is validated through solving several small scale instances using the GAMS software. To tackle real-life problem scales, a genetic-based and a particle-swarm-based algorithm with calibrated...

Preemptive multi-skilled resource constrained project scheduling problem with hard/soft interval due dates

    , Article RAIRO - Operations Research ; Volume 53, Issue 5 , 2019 , Pages 1877-1898 ; 03990559 (ISSN) Maghsoudlou, H ; Afshar Nadjafi, B ; Akhavan Niaki, S. T ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper considers a preemptive multi-skilled resource constrained project scheduling problem in a just-in-time environment where each activity has an interval due date to be completed. In this problem setting, resuming a preempted activity requires an extra setup cost, while each time unit violation from the given due date incurs earliness or tardiness penalty. Also, processing cost of each skill to execute any activity depends on the assigned staff member to accomplish the skill. The objective function of the model aims to minimize the total cost of allocating staff to skills, earliness-tardiness penalties and preemption costs. Two integer formulations are proposed for the model which...

Multi-skilled project scheduling with level-dependent rework risk; three multi-objective mechanisms based on cuckoo search

    , Article Applied Soft Computing Journal ; Volume 54 , 2017 , Pages 46-61 ; 15684946 (ISSN) Maghsoudlou, H ; Afshar Nadjafi, B ; Akhavan Niaki, S. T ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In many projects, multi-skilled workforces are able to perform different tasks with different quality levels. In this paper, a real-life version of the multi-skilled resource constrained project scheduling problem is investigated, in which the reworking risk of each activity depends on the assigned level of multi-skilled workforces. The problem is formulated mathematically as a bi-objective optimization model to minimize total costs of processing the activities and to minimize reworking risks of the activities, concurrently. In order to solve the resulting problem, three cuckoo-search-based multi-objective mechanisms are developed based on non-dominance sorting genetic algorithm,...

Developing a Multi-Skilled Project Scheduling Problem Model Considering Costs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Makhan, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Shadrokh, Shahram (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This research intends to investigate the multi-skilled project scheduling problems (MSPSP) considering staffs’ dynamic efficiency. In doing so, a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model is proposed, considering the influence of personnel learning and forgetting on activities duration. The more the staff spends time on their various skills, the more learned and efficient they will be on that skill (according to personal learning curves) so that they can complete new tasks less costly and more quickly. Most project-based organizations want to maximize value by finishing the projects efficiently and developing their staff’s competence through projects. Inherently, any...

Analysis of Multi-skilled Labor Application in Multi-task Projects

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khaghani, Farnaz (Author) ; Mortaheb, Mohammad Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Pourzahedi, Hossein (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
One of the main challenges construction industry face is the shortage of skilled labor. It is also one of the main reason of project’s delay. Many strategies including compensation payment, longer hiring duration and increase in wages has been proposed. Conventional scheduling assumes unlimited amount of resources or if consider the resource, is restricted to single-skilled resource. This is in contrast with real-world where workers may not be available at any time or they may possess a range of skills. Multiskilling is a workforce strategy that has been shown to reduce indirect labor cost, improve productivity and make the planning more realistic. Past researches proposed algorithms using...

    Abstract
Today, organizations try to decline academically expenses using humans and resources in addition to rising managers and operators' satisfaction. Meantime, a very important step in the process of decision is the assignment of human resources, particularly in connection with research and development (R&D) projects in which the system is highly dependent on the capabilities of human resources. In this study, we tried all the assumptions that come true in the real world, considered a model for applied R&D projects to reduce costs and increase the efficiency of projects. Therefore, an integrated multiproject scheduling and multiskill human resource assignment model under uncertainty has developed...
