A new offset cancellation technique for folding ADC

    , Article IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems 2005, ISCAS 2005, Kobe, 23 May 2005 through 26 May 2005 ; 2005 , Pages 200-203 ; 02714310 (ISSN) Movahedian, H ; Bakhtiar, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a new method for automatic cancellation of mismatch-induced errors in folding ADC is introduced. Using "Trimmable MOSFET's" for input transistors, this method results in considerable reduction of the size of speed-determining transistors while keeping integral non-linearity (INL) arbitrarily low. Using this technique, an 8-bit folding ADC is re-designed and its performance is compared to the original work.©2005 IEEE

    Abstract
An 8-bit CMOS folding-interpolating analog-todigital converter is presented. A new method for designing optimized averaging circuit is also described. Careful circuit design and layout leads to a high-speed (160 MSPS) and low power (70 mW in 2.5 V supply voltage) ADC. The ADC is successfully implemented in 0.25um CMOS digital process and it takes 1x1.4 mm2 silicon area. © 2005 IEEE

    Abstract
This paper presents a new ADC based on using passive charge sharing SAR ADC in a 2-stage pipeline architecture. The charge domain operation of passive charge sharing ADC poses an inherent limitation on its resolution. The proposed architecture increases the achievable resolution with a low power overhead. Designed and simulated in a 0.18um CMOS process, the 12-bits, 40MS/sec ADC core consumes 7mW from a 1.8V supply

Non-fixed scatterers and their effects on MIMO multicarrier fading communication channels

    , Article 50th Annual IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference, GLOBECOM 2007, Washington, DC, 26 November 2007 through 30 November 2007 ; December , 2007 , Pages 3765-3769 ; 1424410436 (ISBN); 9781424410439 (ISBN) Saligheh Rad, H ; Gazor, S ; Shariatpanahi, P ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
There are two types of scatterers in a multipath propagation environment: fixed and non-fixed scatterers. Fixed scatterers like buildings, mountains and tree stems do not move, while non-fixed (moving) scatterers like cars, people and tree leaves move from their initial positions. In addition to different movements of the mobile station (MS) that cause different kinds of Doppler fading, movements of non-fixed scatterers are also anticipated to generate other kinds of fading/correlation. This fading changes depend on the type of the propagation environment and the type of movements of local surrounding scatterers. In this paper we characterize these effects in terms of temporal correlations....

Performance analysis and comparisons of different ultra-wideband multiple access modulation schemes

    , Article IEE Proceedings: Communications ; Volume 153, Issue 5 , 2006 , Pages 705-718 ; 13502425 (ISSN) Zeinalpour Yazdi, Z ; Nasiri Kenari, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The multiuser performance of two kinds of ultra-wideband (UWB) systems, namely, multi-carrier frequency-hopping-UWB and time-hopping-UWB, is evaluated. We derive the bit error rate of these systems in both AWGN and fading channels. Our numerical results show that the TH-UWB system always outperforms the MC-FH-UWB system with non-coherent detection. However, the MC-FH-UWB system with coherent detection presents a better performance than TH-UWB in a very few cases. Then, we use a practical low-rate convolutional error correcting code, which does not require any extra bandwidth further than that needed by the uncoded scheme, to improve the system performance. The results show that the coded...

Low voltage low power 8-bit folding/interpolating ADC with rail-to-rail input range

    , Article Analog Integrated Circuits and Signal Processing ; Volume 61, Issue 2 , 2009 , Pages 181-189 ; 09251030 (ISSN) Movahedian Attar, H ; Sharif Bakhtiar, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
A new technique for improving the performance of low-voltage folding ADC's by extending the input range is presented. It is shown that by using both PMOS and NMOS differential pairs in the folding blocks, the overall input voltage range of the ADC can be increased to rail-to-rail. A novel self-adjustment method is also introduced to compensate for the different input-output characteristics of PMOS and NMOS differential pairs. A low voltage 8-bit 80 MSample/s folding/interpolating ADC is then designed and fabricated in a 0.18 μm CMOS process. Operating with a supply voltage as low as 1.2 V, measurements show an INL below ±0.55 LSB, SNDR of 43.5 dB at 80 MHz Sampling Frequency and power...

    Abstract
We consider an internally coded scheme for multicarrier frequency-hopping CDMA (MC-FH-CDMA) communication systems. In this method, the total bandwidth is partitioned into Ns1 disjoint bands and each band is also segmented into Ns2 subbands. Based on the super-orthogonal encoder output and a pseudorandom (PN) sequence, one of the Ns1 bands is selected. Then, the data is transmitted in that band in the form of multicarrier frequency-hopping technique using BPSK modulation. At the receiver front end, we use soft detector, then we apply Viterbi decoding algorithm. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The results indicate that our method outperforms the previously presented uncoded...

Cognitive-engined spectrum-fragmented synchronous MC-CDMA based on generalized hadamard codes

    Abstract
In Cognitive Radio (CR), in order to avoid interference in the Primary Users (PU), some subcarriers need to be deactivated. In systems based on Multicarrier Code Division Multiple Access (MC-CDMA), this causes losing orthogonality among different spreading codes, leading to poor Bit Error Rate (BER) performance. The performance of such system can be improved by using Generalized Hadamard Codes (GHC) instead of conventional Hadamard codes which avoids the loss of orthogonality. This is due to the fact that unlike conventional Hadamard codes, GHC are conjectured to exist for any arbitrary length. In this paper, we propose using a novel spreading code, namely, GHC for synchronous MC-CDMA in CR...

A novel two-level signaling technique in OOC-based fiber-optic CDMA systems is proposed. Users of the system are categorized into two classes. Users of class 1 and 2 transmit the optical pulses at power level P and 2P respectively. We study two kinds of receiver structure for the proposed two-level system. For the first structure we use ordinary AND logic gate and for the second one we use optical ADC with AND logic gate structure. We obtain the system performance and we show that for the two-level signaling multi-access interference is considerably suppressed. Two-level signaling increase system performance and capacity and also presents different QoS for the users in two classes. © 2009...

    Abstract
Considering the important role of the ambiguity function (AF) of a signal regarding the performance of a matched filter bank for the detection of targets and the estimation of their ranges and velocities, the thumbtack shape is assumed to be the desirable shape of the AF and the method of least squares for the synthesis of the AF is introduced. Then, an iterative method for the allocation of a proper phase to the desired AF is proposed to obtain better results. This method is then applied to select the proper codes for the synthesis of pulsed orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing signals. It is also shown how this method can reduce sidelobes, almost uniformly, throughout the entire...

    Abstract
A unified multiple-access performance analysis and comparison of three multicarrier spread-spectrum multiple-access schemes, namely, MC-CDMA (Multicarrier Code-Division Multiple-Access), MC-FH (Multicarrier Frequency Hopping) and a hybrid of the above systems, called DS-MC-FH (Direct-Sequence MC-FH), in a multirate environment, where each user can have several multirate services, is provided. In MC-CDMA and MC-FH systems, users and their diverse services are differentiated by means of only one kind of signature code. However, in a DS-MCFH scheme, different users and different services of the same user are distinguished through the first and second signature codes, respectively. The...

A novel method for systematic error prediction of CMOS folding and interpolating ADC

    , Article APCCAS 2006 - 2006 IEEE Asia Pacific Conference on Circuits and Systems, 4 December 2006 through 6 December 2006 ; 2006 , Pages 1768-1771 ; 1424403871 (ISBN); 9781424403875 (ISBN) Babaie, M ; Movahedian, H ; Bakhtiar, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, the systematic error due to interpolation in CMOS deep sub micron folding and interpolating ADC is studied and a closed form equation is presented to calculate the error as a function of interpolation coefficient, input voltage range and the number of input differential pairs. The amount of INL due to interpolation error can be considered as the lower bound for attainable INL of a specific ADC architecture. A case study for an 8_bit ADC is treated under consideration of different folding and interpolating factors. The trade off between power dissipation and ADC performance is characterized according to input stage characteristics. ©2006 IEEE

Embedded SI partial transmit sequence with improved bit error rate

    Abstract
OFDM is a multicarrier modulation scheme with high bandwidth efficiency and robustness to multipath environment used in high data rate transmission. However, a drawback of this system is the large Peak-to-Average-Power Ratio (PAR) of the transmit signal which makes its straightforward implementation quite costly. PAR in an OFDM based system can be reduced significantly by PTS method for which data recovery requires side information (SI) about the phases used at transmitter. Sending SI, not only reduces the rate, but also increases BER, for any error in SI detection can damage a large amount of transmitted information. By introducing a new phase set, we propose a PTS based method for MPSK...

    Abstract
In this study, the authors evaluate the performance of asynchronous optical multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) for intensity modulated/direct detection systems to be used in next-generation optical access networks. The proposed system employs Gold sequence in frequency-domain to provide asynchronous resource sharing. In long-reach passive optical networks, fibre impairments degradation to the performance of ordinary optical CDMA can be avoided by frequency-domain digital compensation methods in the proposed MC-CDMA. In comparison with orthogonal frequency division multiple access, peak-to-average power ratio in the proposed MC-CDMA is reduced and asynchronous resource...

Clipping noise cancellation in uplink MC-CDMA system using signal reconstruction from non-uniform samples

    , Article 2008 International Conference on Telecommunications, ICT, St. Petersburg, 16 June 2008 through 19 June 2008 ; 2008 ; 9781424420360 (ISBN) Ali Hemmati, R ; Azmi, P ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, an iterative signal reconstruction method is extended to cancel multi-user clipping noise in a uplink MC-CDMA systems. Clipping is the simplest method to overcome high peak-to-average power ratio of multi-carrier signals but it makes the multi-carrier signals distorted. Reconstruction methods use non-distorted samples to reconstruct distorted samples in the receiver but multi-user interference causes the methods do not work properly because all the received samples are distorted by clipping and interference and so there is no undistorted samples to be used in recovering clipped samples. On the other hand, multi-user interference cancellation methods do not work properly...

    Abstract
In this paper, we present a design methodology with implementational insight and evaluate the performance of a multicarrier code-division multiple access (MC-CDMA) system using intensity modulation/direct detection scheme suitable for an indoor visible light communication (VLC) environment. The proposed system is a CDMA system based on an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) platform. To overcome the light-dimming issue, we use a newly proposed methodology, namely, polarity reversed optical OFDM (PRO-OFDM). A unipolar signal is either added to the minimum current or subtracted from the maximum current in the LED linear current range to provide various amounts of dimming. The...
