A multispectral image segmentation method using size-weighted fuzzy clustering and membership connectedness

    , Article IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters ; Volume 7, Issue 3 , March , 2010 , Pages 520-524 ; 1545598X (ISSN) Hasanzadeh, M ; Kasaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Clustering-based image segmentation is a well-known multispectral image segmentation method. However, as it inherently does not account for the spatial relation among image pixels, it often results in inhomogeneous segmented regions. The recently proposed membership-connectedness (MC)-based segmentation method considers the local and global spatial relations besides the fuzzy clustering stage to improve segmentation accuracy. However, the inherent spatial and intraclass redundancies in multispectral images might decrease the accuracy and efficiency of the method. This letter addresses these two problems and proposes a segmentation method that is based on the MC method, watershed transform,...

    Multispectral Fuzzy Image Segmentation

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Hasanzadeh, Maryam (Author) ; Kasaei, Shohreh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Image segmentation is middle and an important task in image analysis and machine vision applications. The output images of imaging systems are often fuzzy because of noise, limitation in spatial and temporal resolution, blurring and intensity inhomogeneity in the objects. The goal of this thesis is exploring the fuzzy methods in multispectral image segmentation and proposing a new one to solve some of the recent difficulties and problems. The difficulties and problems such as simultaneous utilization of spatial and spectral information, necessity for dimension reduction, spatial and spectral and intra-cluster image information redundancy, existence of regions with widely varying size,...

Image Processing in Paintings Using Multispectral Imaging

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kamani, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Marvasti, Farrokh (Supervisor) ; Amini, Arash (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Considering the tremendous development in imaging systems’ industry, today we can afford to have imaging equipment, capable of taking multispectral images in very high resolution. One of the remarkable benefits of this technology is in the realm of arts and particularly in museums. Taking advantage of the potentials of multispectral, highquality imaging, curators will be able to probe their priceless works of art ( e.g. paintings ) without putting them in danger through invasive research. Besides, one can investigate and control the transformation of these works through time by using this new imaging method. Recently, Multispectral Imaging of paintings, in different frequency bands from...

Multispectral brain MRI segmentation using genetic fuzzy systems

    , Article 2007 9th International Symposium on Signal Processing and its Applications, ISSPA 2007, Sharjah, 12 February 2007 through 15 February 2007 ; 2007 ; 1424407796 (ISBN); 9781424407798 (ISBN) Hasanzadeh, M ; Kasaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques provide detailed anatomic information non-invasively and without the use of ionizing radiation. The development of new pulse sequences in MRI has allowed obtaining images with high clinical importance and thus joint analysis (multispectral MRI) is required for interpretation of these images. Fuzz rule-based systems can combine many inputs from widely varying sources so that they can be useful for description of tissues in MRI. In a fuzzy system an error free and optimized classifier can be obtained by genetic algorithms. In this paper, we have utilized a genetic fuzzy system for modeling different tissues in brain MRI and proposed a statistical...

    Contourlet-based multispectral image fusion

    , Article 7th IASTED International Conference on Visualization, Imaging, and Image Processing, VIIP 2007, Palma de Mallorca, 29 August 2007 through 31 August 2007 ; 2007 , Pages 11-14 ; 9780889866911 (ISBN) Barmas, S. M ; Kasaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Fusion of high spectral but low spatial resolution multispectral and low spectral but high spatial resolution panchromatic satellite images is a very useful technique in various remote sensing applications, such as change detection. Recently, some studies showed that wavelet-based image fusion methods provide high quality spectral content of the fused image. However, most of wavelet-based methods have a spatial resolution of the fused result less than the Brovey, IHS, and PCA fusion methods. This is mainly because real wavelet transform cannot efficiently represent the singularity of linear/curved contents. In this paper, we introduce a new method based on the contourlet transform which...
