    Abstract
Objectives. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are prevalent among airline baggage handlers due to manual materials handling. In this study, the Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire (NMQ), the revised National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) lifting equation, and the University of Michigan 3D Static Strength Prediction Programâ„¢ (3DSSPP) were used to analyze MSDs among baggage handlers. Methods. The NMQ was filled out by 209 baggage handlers and 46 arbitrarily selected baggage handlers were evaluated using the NIOSH method and 3DSSPP. Results. The obtained results showed that the most common MSDs occurred in the lower back region. The next risky regions included knees,...

Test-retest reliability of postural stability measures during quiet standing in patients with a history of nonspecific low back pain

    , Article Biomedical Engineering - Applications, Basis and Communications ; Volume 22, Issue 3 , 2010 , Pages 255-262 ; 10162372 (ISSN) Mazaheri, M ; Salavati, M ; Negahban, H ; Parnianpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
As balance is the foundation for all voluntary motor skills, considerable research has been conducted to evaluate postural control in patients with low back pain (LBP). Although reliability is a population-specific property, to the authors' knowledge, there has been no study to determine the test-retest reliability of the center of pressure (COP) measures in the general population of LBP patients. As many as 11 patients with a history of nonspecific LBP randomly completed postural measurements with three levels of difficulty (rigid surface-eyes open, rigid surface-eyes closed, and foam surface-eyes closed) in two sessions. The COP data were used to calculate standard deviation of amplitude,...

Disorders of the musculoskeletal system among Tehran, Iranian dentists

    , Article Journal of Musculoskeletal Pain ; Vol. 22, issue. 3 , 2014 , pp. 256-259 ; ISSN: 10582452 Shadmehr, A ; Haddad, O ; Azarnia, S ; Sanamlo, Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Objectives: Although dental practitioners are confronted with a number of musculoskeletal disorders, relatively few studies have focused on this profession. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of some musculoskeletal complaints of dentists in Iran. Methods: Four hundred and forty-six dentists in Tehran city, Iran were surveyed to determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal problems. We administrated a Persian-language version of the Nordic Questionnaire for this purpose. Results: Data gathered from Iranian dentists showed that most dentists [81%] reported pain in at least one joint. The most prevalent musculoskeletal disorders during the previous 12 months were reported...

Trapezius muscle activity in using ordinary and ergonomically designed dentistry chairs

    , Article International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine ; Volume 3, Issue 2 , Apr , 2012 , Pages 76-83 ; 20086520 (ISSN) Haddad, O ; Sanjari, M. A ; Amirfazli, A ; Narimani, R ; Parnianpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Background: Most dentists complain of musculoskeletal disorders which can be caused by prolonged static posture lack of suitable rest and other physical and psychological problems. Objective: We evaluated a chair with a new ergonomic design which incorporated forward leaning chest and arm supports. Methods: The chair was evaluated in the laboratory during task simulation and EMG analysis on 12 students and subjectively assessed by 30 professional dentists using an 18-item questionnaire. EMG activity of right and left trapezius muscles for 12 male students with no musculoskeletal disorders was measured while simulating common tasks like working on the teeth of the lower jaw. Results:...

Using robotic mechanical perturbations for enhanced balance assessment

    Abstract
Balance impairment is critical for many patient groups such as those with neural and musculoskeletal disorders and also the elderly. Accurate and objective assessment of balance performance has led to the development of several indices based on the measurement of the center of pressure. In this study, a robotic device was designed and fabricated to provide controlled and repeatable mechanical perturbations to the standing platform of the user. The device uses servo-controlled actuators and two parallel mechanisms to provide independent rotations in mediolateral and anterior-posterior directions. The device also provides visual feedback of the center of pressure position to the user....

Estimation of trunk muscle forces using a bio-inspired control strategy implemented in a neuro-osteo-ligamentous finite element model of the lumbar spine

    Abstract
Low back pain (LBP), the leading cause of disability worldwide, remains one of the most common and challenging problems in occupational musculoskeletal disorders. The effective assessment of LBP injury risk, and the design of appropriate treatment modalities and rehabilitation protocols, require accurate estimation of the mechanical spinal loads during different activities. This study aimed to: (1) develop a novel 2D beam-column finite element control-based model of the lumbar spine and compare its predictions for muscle forces and spinal loads to those resulting from a geometrically matched equilibrium-based model; (2) test, using the foregoing control-based finite element model, the...

Uncontrolled manifold analysis of gait kinematic synergy during normal and narrow path walking in individuals with knee osteoarthritis compared to asymptomatic individuals

    , Article Journal of Biomechanics ; Volume 141 , 2022 ; 00219290 (ISSN) Shafizadegan, Z ; Sarrafzadeh, J ; Farahmand, F ; Salehi, R ; Rasouli, O ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a common musculoskeletal disorder resulting in altered gait patterns. Uncontrolled manifold (UCM) analysis has been demonstrated as a useful approach for quantitative analysis of motor variability and synergies. The present study aimed to investigate the changes in the kinematic synergy, controlling the center of mass (COM) position while walking on normal and narrow paths in people with KOA compared to asymptomatic participants. In this cross-sectional study, twenty people with mild to moderate KOA and twenty asymptomatic individuals walked at their comfortable preferred speed across normal and narrow paths on a treadmill. The UCM analysis was performed...
