Investigation of membrane preparation condition effect on the PSD and porosity of the membranes using a novel image processing technique

    , Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 131, Issue 4 , 15 February , 2014 ; ISSN: 00218995 Sharak, A. Z ; Samimi, A ; Mousavi, S. A ; Bozarjamhari, R. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A totally computerized image processing program package is developed to analyze the SEM images of membrane surface and cross-section. Pore size distribution and porosity of the fabricated membranes are determined using the proposed image processing procedure. Furthermore, effect of coagulation bath temperature on the morphology and mechanical properties (such as tensile strength, strain break, tensile energy absorbent, and tensile stiffness) of Polysulfone (PSf) membranes are investigated. The results reveal that the mechanical properties are higher when N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is used as solvent. Also, an increase in the coagulation bath temperature caused a monotonous increase in the...

Polyaniline membranes for nanofiltration of solvent from dewaxed lube oil

    Abstract
Polyaniline nanofiltration membranes were synthesized to examine a potential candidate for application of solvent recovery from lube oil. An integrally skinned polyaniline membrane was cast on a woven polyester fabric and then was chemically crosslinked with glutaraldehyde in order to further increase the membranes resistant in a methyl ethyl ketone and toluene mixture. Subsequently, membrane performance was tested under different operational conditions. The operation pressure was fixed at 35 bar and was held constant for all of the tests. The membrane demonstrated a permeate flux of 10 l/(m2 h) and oil rejection of 69%. Abbreviations: PANi: Polyaniline; PI: polyimide; MEK: methyl ethyl...

Solvent-, ion- and pH-specific swelling of poly(2-acrylamido-2- methylpropane sulfonic acid) superabsorbing gels

    , Article Journal of Polymer Research ; Volume 17, Issue 2 , 2010 , Pages 203-212 ; 10229760 (ISSN) Kabiri, K ; Zohuriaan Mehr, M. J ; Mirzadeh, H ; Kheirabadi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Homopolymer hydrogel of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) and its nanocomposite counterpart were prepared to study their swelling properties. The hydrogels showed ability to absorb and retain electrolytes as well as binary mixtures of water and organic solvents (i.e., methanol, ethanol, acetone, ethylene glycol (EG), polyethylene glycol, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). The nanocomposite gel exhibited lower swelling in all solvent compositions in comparison with non-composite gel. Unlike conventional acrylic acid-based hydrogels, the poly(AMPS) gels showed superabsorbing capacity in pure ethanol, methanol, EG, DMSO and NMP. Meanwhile, swelling...

Gas-liquid membrane contactors: effects of polymer concentration and solvent type on pore size distribution

    , Article Journal of Membrane Science ; Volume 563 , 2018 , Pages 813-819 ; 03767388 (ISSN) Zolfaghari, A ; Mousavi, S. A ; Bozorgmehri Bozarjomehri, R ; Bakhtiari, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This study investigates the effects of polymer concentration and solvent type on the pore size distribution (PSD) of the fabricated gas-liquid membrane contactors (MCs). Eighteen flat-sheet MCs are fabricated using polysulfone (PSf) and polyethersulfone (PES) polymers, with polymer concentration of 10%, 15%, and 20%. Dimethylformamide (DMF) and n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) solvents are used to prepare the polymeric solutions. The role of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) on the mean pore size of MCs is also studied. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis is applied to visualize the pore system of the fabricated MCs. Image processing technique is used to obtain the PSD of the fabricated MCs...

Synthesis and properties of novel fluorinated polyamides based on noncoplanar sulfoxide containing aromatic bis(ether amine)

    , Article Polymer Journal ; Volume 41, Issue 3 , 2009 , Pages 174-180 ; 00323896 (ISSN) Shockravi, A ; Abouzari Lotf, E ; Javadi, A ; Taheri, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
A novel sulfoxide containing bis(ether amine) monomer, 2,2'-sulfoxide- bis[4-methyl(2-trifluoromethyl)4-aminophenoxy) phenyl ether] (M2), was synthesized from the halogen displacement of 2-chloro-5-nitrobenzotrifluoride with dibenzosulfoxide (DH) in the presence of potassium carbonate, followed by catalytic reduction of bis(ether nitro) intermediate with Zinc/Ammonium chloride. A series of organic-soluble poly(ether amide)s (PA1-7) bearing sulfoxide and electronwithdrawing trifiuoromethyl group were synthesized from bis(ether amine) with various aromatic diacids (1-7) via a direct polycondensation with triphenyl phosphite and pyridine. The resulting polymers had inherent viscosities ranging...
