    Abstract
In this research, we will use an accelerator for MD simulations, called Atomic Approximation Method, which leads to more efficient simulations without harming the physical properties in simulations. The main idea of this method is to define a virtual material with lower number of atoms, which has the same physical properties as the original material. To demonstrate the validity of the proposed technique the modal analysis results are compared with the ones of the conventional molecular dynamics method. It is shown that this method accelerates conventional MD simulations significantly. Copyright © 2006 by ASME

    Abstract
Atomic force microscopy (AFM), as an indispensable tool for nanoscale characterization, presents major drawbacks for operation in a liquid environment arising from the large hydrodynamic drag on the vibrating cantilever. The newly introduced 'Trolling mode' (TR-mode) AFM resolves this complication by using a specialized nanoneedle cantilever that keeps the cantilever outside of the liquid. Herein, a mechanical model with a lumped mass was developed to capture the dynamics of such a cantilever with a nanoneedle tip. This new developed model was applied to investigate the effects of the needle-liquid interface on the performance of the AFM, including the imaging capability in liquid

    Abstract
A Piezoelectric Energy Harvester (PEH) of cantilever beam type is developed to optimize the generated power by means of active control of moment of inertia of the beam. Distributed parameter equations of vibration of the beam are developed. Then the electromechanical response of the piezoelectric actuator is discussed. The harvester configuration is then described and it is shown that such a configuration can avoid the drastic power drop in presence of uncertainty around resonance frequency by applying voltage to the piezoelectric actuator. Finally the proposed harvester output power working frequency span is compared to conventional methods to show that the significant performance...

    , Article JVC/Journal of Vibration and Control ; Volume 21, Issue 13 , October , 2015 , Pages 2509-2519 ; 10775463 (ISSN) Hosseini Kordkheili, S. A ; Momeni Massouleh, S. H ; Khorasani, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
An analytical modified method is presented to investigate the clearance effects on the dynamic behavior of cantilever beams. In this work, apart from clearance, all other nonlinearities are avoided to be considered during the analytical solution. The beam is idealized using an equivalent single-degree-of-freedom structure. A tri-linear stiffness system is also adopted to simulate the beam together with the clearance. Subsequently the analytical solution is derived for a cantilever beam structure with and without considering structural damping. The experimental method is employed to verify the results from the presented analytical solutions. It is noted that the results obtained by the...

    Abstract
In this paper, a tunable vibration absorber (TVA) is designed to suppress regenerative chatter in milling of cantilever plates. In machining industry, the majority of work-piece materials or the interaction of work-piece/cutting tool causes the cutting forces to demonstrate nonlinear behavior. The application of TVA (as a semi-active controller) is investigated for the process with an extensive nonlinear model of cutting forces. Under regenerative chatter conditions, optimum values of the absorber position and its spring stiffness are found such that the plate vibration is minimized. For this purpose, an optimal algorithm is developed based on mode summation approach. Results are presented...

    Abstract
In this paper, the effects of van der Waals and Casimir forces on the static deflection and pull-in instability of a micro/nano cantilever gyroscope with proof mass at its end are investigated. The micro/nano gyroscope is subjected to coupled bending motions which are related by base rotation and nonlinearities due to the geometry and the inertial terms. It is actuated and detected by capacitance plates which are placed on the proof mass. The extended Hamilton principle is used to find the equations governing the static behavior of the clamp-free micro/nano gyroscopes under electrostatic, Casimir and van der Waals forces. The equations of static motion are discritized by Galerkin's...

    Abstract
This paper analyzes the deflection and pull-in behaviors of cantilever and doubly clamped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) under electrostatic actuation using the homotopy perturbation method. The effects of electrostatic force and interatomic interactions on the deflection and pull-in instabilities of CNTs with different lengths, diameters, and boundary conditions are investigated in detail. The results reveal that larger diameters and shorter lengths result in higher pull-in voltages. Moreover, CNTs with doubly clamped boundary conditions, in comparison with cantilever boundary conditions, are more resistant to pull-in

    Abstract
Parallel micro actuators are mostly fabricated using the wet etching process within which the presence of capillary force and the resulting pull-in instabilities can severely affect the success of the fabrication process. In the case the capillary force is large enough then the beam like structure of the micro actuators is collapsed. The current paper investigates; static behavior of microcantilevers under effect of capillary force. It is observed that with increasing the instability number defined in the paper, the deflection of the micro-cantilevers is increased. This study shows in the wet etching fabrication process, if the distance between the beam and substrate is small enough, the...

    Abstract
The resonance frequencies of cantilever carbon nanocones (CNCs) up to 4 nm in height are determined using molecular dynamics simulation based on adaptive intermolecular reactive empirical bond order potential. The frequency content of the free vibrations of CNCs under a lateral initial excitation at the tip is analyzed using fast Fourier transformation, and the resonance frequencies are obtained. The results are reported for various samples to investigate the dependency of the resonance frequency to the geometrical parameters and temperature of CNCs

Models capable of accurate simulation of microcantilever dynamics coupled with complex tip-sample interactions are essential for interpretation and prediction of the imaging results in amplitude modulation or tapping-mode atomic-force microscopy (AM-AFM or TM-AFM). In this paper, four approaches based on combinations of lumped and finite element methods for modelling of cantilever dynamics, and van derWaals and molecular dynamics for modelling of tip-sample interactions, are used to simulate the precise imaging by AM-AFM. Based on the simulated imaging and force determination, the efficiency of different modelling schemes is evaluated. This comparison is performed considering their...

    Abstract
In this paper, modified Adomian decomposition (MAD) is introduced to investigate the effect of the Casimir attraction on pull-in instability of beam-type NEMS theoretically. Two engineering cases including cantilever and double cantilever nano-beam are considered. The proposed MAD method is employed to solve the nonlinear constitutive equation of nano-beams. The basic engineering parameters such as critical deflection and pull-in voltage of nano-beams are computed. It is found that the Casimir forces decrease the pull-in deflection and voltage of nano-beams. On the other hand, the fringing field increases the pull-in deflection while decreases the pull-in voltage of the actuators. As a...

    Abstract
The vibration analysis of rotating, functionally graded Timoshenko nano-beams under an in-plane nonlinear thermal loading is studied for the first time. The formulation is based on Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory. Hamilton's principle is used for the derivation of the equations. The governing equations are solved by the differential quadrature method. The nano-beam is under axial load due to the rotation and thermal effects, and the boundary conditions are considered as cantilever and propped cantilever. The thermal distribution is considered to be nonlinear and material properties are temperature-dependent and are changing continuously through the thickness according to the power-law...
