    Abstract
A novel approach is obtained during the fabrication of NiCoFe-B nanotube arrays via electroless method. Porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates fabricated by anodization of aluminum foil were sensitized using PdCl 2 solution and immersed into electroless plating baths at room temperature to produce nanotube arrays. Compositional and morphological properties of the nanotube arrays are characterized. Results indicates the formation of end-closed nanotubes with the dimension of 100-130 nm in outside diameter, which is determined by the pore size of the AAO template, and about 15 nm in thickness of tube walls. The possible formation mechanism of end-closed metallic nanotube arrays is...

    , Article International Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology ; Volume 5, Issue 5 , 26 August , 2008 , Pages 464-468 ; 1546542X (ISSN) Hosseini Vajargah, S ; Madaah Hosseini, H. R ; Nemati, Z. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Nanocrystalline Y3-xMMxFe5O12 powders (MM denotes Misch-metal, x = 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0) were synthesized by a sol-gel combustion method. Magnetic properties and crystalline structures were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and a scanning electron microscope. The XRD patterns showed that the single-phase garnet of Y3-xMMxFe5O12 was formed at x values ≤ 1.0. The saturation magnetization of powders increased with decreasing MM content and reached the maximum value at Y3 Fe5O12. The crystallite size of powders calcined at 800°C for 3 h was in the range of 38-53 nm. © 2008 American Ceramic Society

A new model for inverse Hall-Petch relation of nanocrystalline materials

    , Article Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance ; Volume 17, Issue 5 , 2008 , Pages 662-666 ; 10599495 (ISSN) Shafiei Mohammadabadi, A ; Dehghani, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In the present article, a new model for inverse Hall-Petch relation in nanocrystalline materials has been proposed. It is assumed that lattice distortion along grain boundaries can cause internal stresses and high internal stresses along grain boundaries can promote the grain boundary yielding. The designed model was then verified using the nanocrystalline-copper data. The minimum grain size for inverse Hall-Petch relation is determined to be about 11 nm for Cu. © 2008 ASM International

    Abstract
Electrocatalytic activity of electrodeposited nanocrystalline CoNiFe alloy in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was studied in 1 M NaOH solution. The steady-state polarization measurement and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to determine the Tafel slope, the exchange current density and the activation energy. The simulation of the data obtained from these two methods, using a nonlinear fitting procedure, allowed us to determine the surface coverage and the rate constants associated with the mentioned reaction. The ac-impedance spectra measured at various overpotentials in the HER region exhibited three semicircles in the complex plane plots. The high-frequency semicircle was...

    Abstract
The molecular-dynamics analysis is presented for 3D compaction simulation of nano-crystalline metals under uniaxial compaction process. The nano-crystalline metals consist of nickel and aluminum nano-particles, which are mixed with specified proportions. The EAM pair-potential is employed to model the formation of nano-particles at different temperatures, number of nano-particles, and mixing ratio of Ni and Al nano-particles to form the component into the shape of a die. The die-walls are modeled using the Lennard-Jones inter-atomic potential between the atoms of nano-particles and die-walls. The forming process is model in uniaxial compression, which is simulated until the full-dense...

    Abstract
In this paper, an artificial neural network (ANN) model has been developed to predict the yield and tensile strengths of hot pressed NiAl intermetallic compound based on the experimental data from Albiter et al. [A. Albiter, M. Salazar, E. Bedolla, R.A.L. Drew, R. Perez, Mater. Sci. Eng. A 347 (2003) 154]. The predicted results, with a correlation relation between 0.9791 and 0.9921, show a very good agreement with the experimental values. Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis was performed to investigate the importance of the effects of chemical composition and temperature on the mechanical behavior of hot pressed NiAl intermetallic compound. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Effect of brookite presence on nanocrystalline anatase - Rutile phase transformation

    , Article International Journal of Nanotechnology ; Volume 6, Issue 10-11 , 2009 , Pages 961-972 ; 14757435 (ISSN) Mahshid, S ; Askari, M ; Sasani Ghamsari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
TiO2nanocrystals were prepared by hydrolysis and peptisation of titanium isopropoxide under different pH values. The as-prepared powder of very fine anatase crystallites ranges from 8 nm in acidic solution of pH 3 to 10 nm in basic solution of pH 8. Heat treatment of the powders leads to grain growth and anatase - rutile transformation. Experimental results have shown that the anatase to rutile phase transformation in the heat-treated powders depend not only on primary crystallite size but also the presence of brookite phase. It is observed that in the powders with the same size the presence brookite phase would accelerate the anatase to rutile transformation. Furthermore it has been found...

    Abstract
Molecular dynamics simulations are employed to investigate material properties of nanocrystalline aluminum and nanocrystalline Al/Ni multilayers at low temperature. For this purpose, both single crystal and nanocrystalline multilayers with different grain sizes and grain morphology are used as the substrate. The results of the simulations show that hardness and elastic modulus decrease with refinement of grain size in nanocrystalline aluminum and refinement of grain size and layer thickness in nanocrystalline Al/Ni multilayers, regardless of grain morphology. Furthermore, the angle between two adjacent grains, which is directly connected to the grain boundary thickness, has a great influence...

    2008
    Abstract
Two-step sintering (TSS) was applied on nanocrystalline yttria tetragonal stabilized zirconia (3Y-TZP) to control the grain growth during the final stage of sintering. The process involves firing at a high temperature (T1) followed by rapid cooling to a lower temperature (T2) and soaking for a prolonged time (t). It is shown that for nanocrystalline 3Y-TZP (27 nm) the optimum processing condition is T1 = 1300 °C, T2 = 1150 °C and t = 30 h. Firing at T1 for 1 min yields 0.83 fractional density and renders pores unstable, leading to further densification at the lower temperature (T2) without remarkable grain growth. Consequently, full density zirconia ceramic with an average grain size of 110...

    Abstract
S500MC high strength low alloy automotive steel is exposed to bulk severe plastic deformation (SPD) via constrained groove pressing (CGP) and surface severe plastic deformation (S2PD) via severe shot peening (SSP) and ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM). SSP and UNSM could create a nanocrystallization layer till 50–100 µm away from outmost surface. EBSD investigations showed average nano-grain size obtained via SSP and UNSM was found to be below 100 nm regime. The strength was improved via 1st to 4th pass of CGP, but elongation percentage decreased abruptly. UNSM achieves both strength-ductility improvement with gradient structure. SSP improves the total elongation however a...

    Abstract
A modified plastic yield function is proposed to predict the consolidation behavior of nanostructured metal powders and metal-matrix nanocomposite powders under uniaxial compaction. The validity of the model is verified for nanocrystalline Al6063 (~100nm) alloy reinforced without and with 0.8vol.% Al2O3 nanoparticles (~25nm). The plastic deformation propensity of these powders is analyzed by linear compaction equations. The yield stress of the powder compacts is shown to be influenced by the nano-scale grains and the reinforcement nanoparticles
