    Abstract
One of the significant challenges in urbanization is the air pollution. This highlights the need of the green city concept with reconsideration of houses, factories, and traffic in a green viewpoint. The literature review confirms that this reconsideration for green space has a positive effect on the air quality of large cities and to reduce the air pollution. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the annual vegetation changes in the green space of Mashhad, Iran as a very populated city in the middle east to study the air pollution. To investigate the relationship between the air pollution and vegetation, the Landsat 8 satellite images for summer seasons of 2013–2019 were used to extract...

Monitoring Urmia Lake area variation using MODIS satellite data

    Abstract
Urmia Lake is a large hyper-saline lake located in the northwest of Iran. It plays an important role in the hydrology, climate and ecology of its surrounding regions. In recent years, the water level of Urmia Lake has been dropped significantly. This study investigates the seasonal and annual variations of the lake area from 2000 to 2011 using remote sensing data. MODIS imageries of Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) were used to extract the water surface area of the lake. Results reveal a significant decline in the lake area during the last past 12 years. Analysis of the seasonal images shows that maximum and minimum areas of Urmia Lake usually occur in winter and autumn,...

Optimized echo state networks for drought modeling based on satellite data

    Abstract
Remotely sensed data obtained through satellite imaging is a useful tool for modeling environmental phenomena such as drought. In this manuscript, we apply optimized echo state networks to model and predict drought severity based on satellite images. To this end, a model is constructed in which the satellite-based vegetation index is fed as an input and drought severity index is obtained as output. We use a Kronecker-based approach to reduce the number of parameters of echo state networks to be optimized (i.e., the internal weights of reservoir). A number of evolutionary algorithms are used to optimize the parameters, of Differential Evolution results in the best performance as compared to...

METRIC and WaPOR estimates of evapotranspiration over the Lake Urmia basin: Comparative analysis and composite assessment

    , Article Water (Switzerland) ; Volume 11, Issue 8 , 2019 ; 20734441 (ISSN) Javadian, M ; Behrangi, A ; Gholizadeh, M ; Tajrishy, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Evapotranspiration is one of the main components of water and energy balance. In this study, we compare two ET products, suitable for regional analysis at high spatial resolution: The recent WaPOR product developed by FAO and METRIC algorithm. WaPOR is based on ETLook, which is a two-source model and relies on microwave images. WaPOR is unique as it has no limitation under cloudy days, but METRIC is limited by clouds. METRIC and WaPOR are more sensitive to land surface temperature and soil moisture, respectively. Using two years (2010 and 2014) of data over Lake Urmia basin, we show that in most areas, ET from METRIC is higher than WaPOR and the difference has an ascending trend with the...

Comparison and assessment of spatial downscaling methods for enhancing the accuracy of satellite-based precipitation over Lake Urmia Basin

    Abstract
Estimating precipitation at high spatial-temporal resolution is vital in manifold hydrological, meteorological and water management applications, especially over areas with un-gauged networks and regions where water resources are on the wane. This study aims to evaluate five downscaling methods to determine the accuracy and efficiency of which on generating high-resolution precipitation data at annual and monthly scales. To establish precipitation-Land surface characteristics relationship, environmental factors, including Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Land Surface Temperature (LST) and Digital Elevation Model (DEM), were considered as proxies in the spatial downscaling...
