Dynamic model for brushless doubly-fed machine with stator winding faults

    , Article International Review of Electrical Engineering ; Volume 4, Issue 6 , 2009 , Pages 1223-1230 ; 18276660 (ISSN) Gorgin, H ; Sotoodeh, P ; Oraee, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a detailed analytical model for dynamic analysis of the Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine is presented. The model is capable to predict the machine behavior under different modes of operation including: simple induction mode, cascade mode and synchronous mode, both with and without winding faults and unbalanced excitations. The proposed approach employs the basic principles of the generalized harmonic theory for calculating self inductances and mutual inductances of circuits with any distribution of conductors. Dynamic equations of modified coupled-circuit method are then solved to compute the currents flowing in the stator windings and rotor loops. Copyright © 2009 Praise Worthy...

Calculation of core and stray load losses in brushless doubly fed induction generators

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics ; Vol. 61, issue. 7 , 2014 , pp. 3167-3177 ; SSN: 02780046 Gorginpour, H ; Oraee, H ; Abdi, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The brushless doubly fed induction generator (BDFIG) has substantial benefits, which make it an attractive alternative as a wind generator. However, it suffers from lower efficiency and larger dimensions in comparison with the doubly fed induction generator. A major part of drawbacks arises from undesirable spatial harmonics of air-gap magnetic field. Calculation of core loss is an important issue in optimal design studies to improve the performance characteristics. The iron loss is higher and has a more complex nature in BDFIGs in contrast with conventional machines. Furthermore, additional losses cannot be ignored due to a high level of spatial harmonics distortion. This paper aims to...

    Abstract
The cause of about 10% of faults in induction machines is related to the rotor part. In this paper, an analytical method for general modeling of brushless doubly-fed machines (BDFMs) with broken rotor loops and end ring is presented. The approach is based on calculation of resistance and inductance matrices through the winding function of the machine, so the assumption of sinusoidal MMF is not needed. It is also shown that a fault in a loop can lead to faults in other parts of the rotor. To validate the method a simulation in MATLAB/Simulink is performed based on the D180-frame prototype BDFM

Analysis of Brushless Doubly-Fed Motor under Various Operating Modes

    Abstract
The Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine (BDFM) is a machine which incorporates the robustness of the squirrel cage induction machine and the speed and power factor control of a synchronous machine. All of these advantages are obtainable from a relatively low rating power electronic converter (e.g. 30% of the machine’s rating). The stator of a BDFM is furnished with two balanced three phase windings of conventional design (power and control winding). These windings differ in pole number and are often excited at different frequencies. Hence, there is no direct magnetic coupling between them. The power winding is connected to a constant-voltage, constant-frequency source and the control winding is...

Optimal Design of Brushless Doubly-Fed Induction Generator Considering Harmonic Effects for Maximizing Volumetric Power Density

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Gorgin-Poor, Hamed (Author) ; Oraee Mirzamani, Hashem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent decades, electricity generation using renewable energy sources especially wind has gained considerable attention worldwide. Various generating systems have been proposed for wind turbines to convert wind mechanical power into electrical power. Up to 70% of the installed wind turbines incorporate Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) and a fractionally rated power converter. Other schemes still have technological and economic penalties such as high cost of active materials, complexity of machine manufacturing and control systems and large and expensive converter, which limit their spread in wind power plants. Among these, Brushless Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (BDFIG) has...

Generalized vector model for the brushless doubly-fed machine with a nested-loop rotor

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics ; Volume 58, Issue 6 , August , 2011 , Pages 2313-2321 ; 02780046 (ISSN) Barati, F ; Shao, S ; Abdi, E ; Oraee, H ; McMahon, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper presents a generic vector model for the brushless doubly-fed machine (BDFM) with a nested-loop rotor. The vector model is presented for a generic p1/p2 pole-pair BDFM which may have any number of loops per nest. The vector transformations utilized in the derivation of the vector model are provided in general form such that the model can be represented in any appropriate reference frames according to the specific application of the model, such as BDFM analysis, simulations, or control system synthesis. The derived vector model benefits from the feature of reduced order in comparison with the coupled-circuit model, which is the most detailed model for the BDFM, while maintaining the...

A novel modeling approach for design studies of brushless doubly fed induction generator based on magnetic equivalent circuit

    Abstract
Brushless doubly fed induction generator (BDFIG) has substantial benefits, which make it an attractive alternative as a wind turbine generator. However, it suffers from lower efficiency and larger dimensions in comparison to DFIG. Hence, optimizing the BDFIG structure is necessary for enhancing its situation commercially. In previous studies, a simple model has been used in BDFIG design procedure that is insufficiently accurate. Furthermore, magnetic saturation and iron loss are not considered because of difficulties in determination of flux density distributions. The aim of this paper is to establish an accurate yet computationally fast model suitable for BDFIG design studies. The proposed...
