In-plane free vibrations of annular elliptic and circular elastic plates of non-uniform thickness under classical boundary conditions

    , Article International Review of Mechanical Engineering ; Volume 4, Issue 1 , 2010 , Pages 112-119 ; 19708734 (ISSN) Hassani, A ; Hojjati, M. H ; Fathi, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper presents a formulation for in-plane modal characteristics of non-uniform thickness annular elliptic and circular plates for all classical boundary conditions. The investigations are performed for elastic and isotropic annular elliptic plates on the basis of two- dimensional linear plane stress theory of elasticity. Two-dimensional boundary characteristic orthogonal polynomials (BCOP) are used in the Rayleigh-Ritz method to obtain the natural frequencies and associated mode shapes. The proposed method, not only can find solution for those simple cases of annular circular plates available in literature as a simplified case study, but also it finds some natural frequencies which can...

Thermo-mechanical analysis of rotating disks with non-uniform thickness and material properties

    , Article International Journal of Pressure Vessels and Piping ; Volume 98 , October , 2012 , Pages 95-101 ; 03080161 (ISSN) Hassani, A ; Hojjati, M. H ; Mahdavi, E ; Alashti, R. A ; Farrahi, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2012
    Abstract
Theoretical and numerical analyses of rotating disks with non-uniform thickness and material properties subjected to thermo-mechanical loadings have been carried out by variable material properties (VMP), Runge-Kutta's (RK) and finite element (FE) methods. The material is assumed to be elastic-linear hardening. A power form function is used to describe the temperature gradient with the higher temperature at outer surface. Von-Mises theory has been used as failure criterion. The effects of geometry, material and thermal loading parameters as well as boundary conditions on radial, hoop and equivalent stress distributions which have not been studied in much detail in previous works have been...

Vibration based damage detection in smart non-uniform thickness laminated composite beams

    , Article TIC-STH'09: 2009 IEEE Toronto International Conference - Science and Technology for Humanity, 26 September 2009 through 27 September 2009, Toronto, ON ; 2009 , Pages 176-181 ; 9781424438785 (ISBN) Ghaffari, H ; Saeedi, E ; Zabihollah, A ; Ahmadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Laminated composite beams with non-uniform thickness are being used as primary structural elements in a wide range of advanced engineering applications. Tapered composite structures, formed by terminating some of the plies, create geometry and material discontinuities that act as sources for delamination initiation and propagation. Any small damage or delamination in these structures can progress rapidly without any visible external signs. Due to this reason early detection of damage in these systems during their service life is receiving increasing attention. The presence of a crack in a component or structure leads to changes in its global dynamic characteristics results in decreases in...

Vibration Based Health Monitoring for Damage Detection of Composite Laminates

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghaffari, Hamid Reza (Author) ; Zabihollah, Abolghasem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Development of composite materials is one of the boldest technological advances of the last half of the twentieth century. This is due to their specific characteristics mostly considerably high strength-to-weight ratio, compared to metals and their highly customizing properties for different applications which make them a suitable material to be used in variety of domain from aerospace and automobiles to medical and sport equipments. Multi-stable asymmetrical laminates and non-uniform thickness laminated composite beams are being used as structural elements in a wide range of advanced engineering applications. Multi-stable asymmetrical laminates can be snapped between two or more geometries...

    Abstract
The dynamic behavior of nonuniform-thickness laminated composite beams, such as helicopter blades, wind turbine blades, and robot arms, is of high importance in the design and fabrication of such elements. Changing the thickness of laminated structures is a significant challenge during fabrication because different tapering configurations may significantly alter the stiffness of the structures and thus the dynamic response of the structures. In this study, the effect of adding nanoparticles to resin on the stiffness and dynamic behavior of nonuniform-thickness laminated composite beam elements was investigated. A set of experiments were conducted to examine the natural frequencies and...

Semi-exact solution for thermo-mechanical analysis of functionally graded elastic-strain hardening rotating disks

    , Article Communications in Nonlinear Science and Numerical Simulation ; Volume 17, Issue 9 , 2012 , Pages 3747-3762 ; 10075704 (ISSN) Hassani, A ; Hojjati, M. H ; Farrahi, G. H ; Alashti, R. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, distributions of stress and strain components of rotating disks with non-uniform thickness and material properties subjected to thermo-elasto-plastic loading are obtained by semi-exact method of Liao's homotopy analysis method (HAM) and finite element method (FEM). The materials are assumed to be elastic-linear strain hardening and isotropic. The analysis of rotating disk is based on Von Mises' yield criterion. A two dimensional plane stress analysis is used. The distribution of temperature is assumed to have power forms with the hotter point located at the outer surface of the disk. A mathematical technique of transformation has been proposed to solve the homotopy equations...

Piezoelectric composites with periodic multi-coated inhomogeneities

    , Article International Journal of Solids and Structures ; Volume 47, Issue 21 , October , 2010 , Pages 2893-2904 ; 00207683 (ISSN) Hashemi, R ; Weng, G. J ; Kargarnovin, M. H ; Shodja, H. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A new, robust homogenization scheme for determination of the effective properties of a periodic piezoelectric composite with general multi-coated inhomogeneities is developed. In this scheme the coating does not have to be thin, the shape and orientation of the inclusion and coatings do not have to be identical, their centers do not have to coincide, their properties do not have to remain uniform, and the microstructure can be with the 2D elliptic or the 3D ellipsoidal inclusions. The development starts from the local electromechanical equivalent inclusion principle through the introduction of the position-dependent equivalent eigenstrain and electric field. Then with a Fourier series...

Semi-exact elastic solutions for thermo-mechanical analysis of functionally graded rotating disks

    , Article Composite Structures ; Volume 93, Issue 12 , 2011 , Pages 3239-3251 ; 02638223 (ISSN) Hassani, A ; Hojjati, M. H ; Farrahi, G ; Alashti, R. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, distributions of stress and strain components of rotating disks with non-uniform thickness and material properties subjected to thermo-elastic loading under different boundary conditions are obtained by semi-exact methods of Liao's homotopy analysis method (HAM), Adomian's decomposition method and He's variational iteration method (VIM). The materials are assumed to be perfectly elastic and isotropic. A two dimensional plane stress analysis is used. The distribution of temperature over the disk radius is assumed to have power forms with the higher temperature at the outer surface. The results of the three methods are compared with those obtained by Runge-Kutta's numerical...
