    Pipe damper, Part II: Application to bridges

    Abstract
    Theoretical and experimental verification of the pipe damper was investigated in Part I of the two companion papers. In this paper, the application of the pipe damper to structures is examined. In particular, single span slab-girder bridges are considered for analytical investigations. A practical detail for the installation of the pipe damper is introduced. Nonlinear dynamic time history analyses are conducted on bridges equipped with the pipe damper and the results are compared with ordinary bridges. Bridge span, ground motion and the pipe length are varied in the analyses. Results show that the pipe damper is a reliable and economical metallic-yielding device that can easily be installed...

    Abstract
    This study is about the performance assessment of steel moment resisting frame structures under nearfield strong ground motions. A number of 3 and 9-story, 3-D structural models being designed using the strength method, are considered. A set of 7 near-field earthquake records, scaled according to ASCE- 7(05), are considered for nonlinear dynamic time history analyses using OpenSees program. Park and Ang damage index is considered for quantitative measurement of the performance of structural models.     Abstract
    During recent years, Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) have been effectively used to control the seismic response of structural systems. Recovering the residual strains upon unloading (super-elasticity) or by heating (shape memory effect) is the main characteristic of SMA materials. This paper explores the efficiency of a proposed application of steel & SMA bolts in improving the seismic behavior of connections in steel Moment Resisting Frame (MRF) structures.
